This past week, our team and I participated in the Greater Los Angeles Annual Point-in-Time Homelessness Count. Every year in January, Angelenos head out in the evening to identify how many people are experiencing homelessness in our communities. This count helps us to determine how many people are experiencing homelessness so we can better understand where to allocate resources and deliver services.

We traveled from San Pedro and Wilmington, to Harbor City, and up through the Gateway on Wednesday and then in Watts on Thursday spending time in each of the five communities participating in their counts. It was great to join so many friends and neighbors on this important effort.

The Annual Point-in-Time Homeless Count isn’t about numbers, these are our neighbors who need us to move effectively and quickly. Thank you to all of our volunteers throughout the One-Five who joined us to help support our unhoused neighbors.

This past Saturday there was an oil spill at Warren E&P on Anaheim St. On Tuesday, I introduced a motion in Council calling on various agencies to come before my Energy & Environment Committee and report on the causes that could have led to the oil spill. I’ve requested that this report include an analysis of what happened, how it happened, why it happened, how we can prevent it from happening, and to give us the roadmap for the liability to make sure that Warren E&P is held fully accountable for these environmental risks and harms. It's extraordinarily important that we work closely with all of these agencies that will be responsible for assisting us and doing justice in Wilmington.

CLEAN 15

LAPD PRESS CONFERENCE

On Thursday, we announced the arrest of the suspect wanted for 3 murders and 5 attempted murders over the span of a few weeks in 3 of our 5 communities in the One-Five at the end of last year. These were innocent victims, going about their everyday lives, who were gunned down in acts of horrific, senseless violence. My heart breaks for the families and loved ones who have been and will be affected every day for the rest of their lives. Thank you to the community who offered tips, detectives who worked this case, LAPD, and the District Attorney’s office for standing up for these families in the pursuit of justice for Carlos Loera, Ashley Guzman, and Joseph Saldana - innocent souls, gone far too soon.

MEMORIAL PLAQUES

I was both angry and saddened by the cowardly acts of vandalism and theft of the memorial plaques on the waterfront. Once notified, we immediately reached out to LAPD and Port Police to install fencing, add additional monitoring, and investigate who stole these precious memorials for so many families in this area. The theft of these plaques is an insult to our community. These are memorials of great families who built this area with the fishing industry, who have moved our goods as part of the ILWU, and who protected our country and moved goods during the war as Merchant Marine sailors. We must hold those who committed these acts accountable. And, we’ll work to replace these memorials at a time when it’s safe to put them back up and celebrate our great history and culture - something that can never be stolen. NARBONNE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

This week our team attended the Narbonne area Neighborhood Watch meeting. Hearing what our neighbors have to say about public safety is crucial and helps us understand what the needs are in the One-Five. Reach out to your Senior Lead Officer to discuss starting your own neighborhood watch in your area.

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL MENTAL HEALTH

We attended the first Harbor City Neighborhood Council meeting of 2024 last Wednesday. Stakeholders were provided with a presentation from the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) which provides advocacy, education, support and public awareness to break the stigma of mental illness. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (https://988lifeline.org) offers free, confidential crisis counseling 24/7/365 just by dialing 988 — and you don’t have to be in crisis to call.

ALLEY CLEAN UP

Thanks to the LA Conservation Corps. for cleaning up the alley between Lomita Blvd. and 251st St. If you’d like to request an alley to be cleaned up please contact our office.

CLEAN TEAM PRESENTATION

At the Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council, members from the Clean 15 Team joined the meeting to present the work they have been doing in the Harbor Gateway and in our district. We also had LA Sanitation’s Altered Shift Illegal Dumping Team present to give attendees information on how the department tracks data in regards to dumping and cleanups.

WESTERN ROADWAY REPAINTING

This week, CalTrans roadway crews were out on the intersection of Western Ave. and Torrance Blvd. The pedestrian crosswalks and other road marks were repainted by the crews to improve visibility and pedestrian safety. Remember you can report service requests to CalTrans here.

PALM FRONDS PICKUP

The winds over the past few weeks have knocked down tree branches and palm fronds throughout the One-Five. Our office has been putting in service requests when we see them, such as here on Athens Blvd. Please continue to report any palm fronds, tree branches, or tree emergencies to MYLA311.

NUISANCE PROPERTY

Last week the City Council approved my resolution to address a nuisance property in San Pedro due to the illegal dumping and other unlawful activity. On Thursday, the City posted a notice on 603 N. Gaffey Pl./708 W. Elberon Ave. for an evidentiary hearing on the property. This hearing will take place in Council Chambers on February 9th starting at 10 AM and folks can call in or show up in person at City Hall. This is just an example of what the City can do when we know that there's a problem property that poses a nuisance in one of our communities and we are going to see this all the way through and abate this nuisance.

PARKWAY PROMENADE PLAY AREA

Although it was raining Saturday morning, it was still a great day to dedicate the new Parkway Promenade play area along Harbor Blvd. This is what different agencies working together can accomplish. Thank you to the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), the County of Los Angeles, and the US Department of Housing & Urban Development for coming together to fund and build this much awaited and necessary project for our harbor kids.

TEEN MURAL UNVEILING

On Saturday, I attended the official unveiling of Angels Gate’s newest mural by the AGCC Teen Mural Club. The mural is dedicated to the individuality and community we see at Angels Gate and in San Pedro, and will be on display on the side of Building C. The completion of the mural coincides with the culmination of the second session of the Teen Mural Club following its successful pilot program in the summer of 2023. Congratulations to the wonderful artists who conceptualized and created this mural.

TREE REMOVED ON TENTH ST.

Following the rain earlier this week, a tree came down on 10th St. between Pacific and Grand Ave. We reported the tree and within the day, LA Street Services arrived at the scene and removed the tree in its entirety.

POLICE COMMISSION MEETING AT WLCAC

On Tuesday I went to a terrific community event as the Police Commission held a meeting at the WLCAC’s Phoenix Hall. This was a very special opportunity for our residents to speak to the Commission about issues of concern, interests, hopes, and dreams for the future of LAPD. I am very much looking forward to the next one and thank you to both the Commission and residents for coming out.

TREE PLANTING

103rd St. got a new tree thanks to a Tree Dedication program in conjunction with Watts Rising and TreePeople. We requested the tree for the community so that it may grow as our office does. Thank you for this program Watts Rising!

HEALING CIRCLE

We attended a healing circle last Friday held by The Reverence Project and Chosen Angels at Imperial Courts. Healing circles create a safe space for participants to be able to discuss personal experiences in a welcoming environment directly in their community.

BEST START

This Thursday we attended Best Start Wilmington and it was wonderful to hear about the positive role Best Start plays in supporting children and families. We’re grateful to Best Start for all that they do including providing access to quality services which contribute significantly to building thriving communities.

WATERFRONT PROMENADE

We’ve got a busy day next Saturday on the waterfront! Join us from 1-3 PM for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade! Starting at 3 PM, the Port of LA will be hosting their Lunar New Year Festival featuring cultural entertainment, a petting zoo, crafts, and (weather permitting) a firework finale! UPGRADED STREET SIGNALS

Yesterday the LA Department of Transportation was out on PCH and Wilmington Blvd. upgrading the street signals. This is a positive step towards improving community infrastructure and can help contribute to enhanced safety, traffic flow, and overall urban development.

La semana pasada, nuestro equipo y yo participamos en el Conteo Anual de Personas sin Hogar en un momento determinado en Los Ángeles. Cada año, en enero, los angelinos salen por la noche para identificar cuántas personas se encuentran sin hogar en nuestras comunidades. Este recuento nos ayuda a determinar cuántas personas se encuentran sin hogar para que podamos comprender mejor dónde asignar recursos y brindar servicios.

Viajamos desde San Pedro y Wilmington hasta Harbor City, pasando por Gateway el miércoles y luego en Watts el jueves, pasando tiempo en cada una de las cinco comunidades que participan en sus conteos. Fue fantástico unirnos con tantos amigos y vecinos en este esfuerzo tan importante.

El conteo anual de personas sin hogar en un momento dado no se trata de números, estos son nuestros vecinos que necesitan que nos movamos de manera efectiva y rápida. Gracias a todos nuestros voluntarios de One-Five que se unieron a nosotros para ayudar a nuestros vecinos sin hogar.

El sábado pasado hubo un derrame de petróleo en Warren E&P en la calle de Anaheim. El martes presenté una moción en el Consejo pidiendo a varias agencias que se presentaran ante mí Comité de Energía y Medio Ambiente e informaran sobre las causas que podrían haber llevado al derrame de petróleo. CONFERENCIA DE PRENSA DE LAPD

El jueves anunciamos el arresto del sospechoso buscado por 3 asesinatos y 5 intentos de asesinato en el transcurso de pocas semanas en 3 de nuestras 5 comunidades en el One-Five a fines del año. Se trataba de víctimas inocentes que seguían con su vida cotidiana y que fueron asesinados a tiros en actos de una violencia horrible y sin sentido. Mi corazón se rompe por las familias y los seres queridos que han sido y serán afectados por el resto de sus vidas. Gracias a la comunidad que ofreció pistas, a los detectives que trabajan en este caso, a la policía de Los Ángeles y a la oficina del fiscal de distrito por defender a estas familias en la búsqueda de justicia para Carlos Loera, Ashley Guzmán y Joseph Saldana: almas inocentes que se fueron muy pronto.

PLACAS CONMEMORATIVAS

Me siento a la vez enojado y entristecido por los cobardes actos de vandalismo y robo de las placas conmemorativas en el paseo marítimo. Una vez notificados, nos comunicamos inmediatamente con LAPD y la Policía Portuaria para instalar cercas, agregar monitoreo adicional e investigar quién robó estos preciosos monumentos conmemorativos de tantas familias en esta área. El robo de estas placas es un insulto a nuestra comunidad. Estos son monumentos conmemorativos de las grandes familias que construyeron esta área con la industria pesquera que trasladaron nuestros productos como parte del ILWU y que protegieron a nuestro país y trasladaron productos durante la guerra como marineros de la Marina Mercante. Debemos responsabilizar a quienes cometieron estos actos. Trabajaremos para reemplazar estos monumentos cuando sea seguro volver a colocarlos y celebrar nuestra gran historia y cultura, algo que nunca podrá ser robado. VIGILANCIA DEL BARRIO DE NARBONNE

Esta semana nuestro equipo asistió a la reunión de Vigilancia Vecinal del área de Narbonne. CONSEJO VECINAL DE SALUD MENTAL

Asistimos a la primera reunión del Consejo Vecinal de Harbor City de 2024 el miércoles pasado. Las partes interesadas recibieron una presentación de la Alianza Nacional de Enfermedades Mentales (NAMI por sus siglas en inglés), que brinda promoción, educación, apoyo y conciencia pública para romper el estigma de las enfermedades mentales. 988 la línea de vida de Suicidio y Crisis (https://988lifeline.org/) ofrece asesoramiento de crisis gratuito y confidencial las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, los 365 días del año, simplemente marque 988, y no necesita estar en crisis para llamar.

LIMPIEZA DEL CALLEJÓN

Gracias al Cuerpo de Conservación de Los Ángeles. para limpiar el callejón entre Lomita Blvd. y 251st St. Si desea solicitar que se limpie un callejón, comuníquese con nuestra oficina.

PRESENTACIÓN DEL EQUIPO LIMPIO

En el Consejo Vecinal de Harbor Gateway North, miembros del equipo Clean 15 se unieron a la reunión para presentar el trabajo que han estado haciendo en Harbor Gateway y en nuestro distrito. ¡También tuvimos presente al Equipo de Deshechos Ilegales Alterados de LA Sanitation para dar a los asistentes información sobre cómo el departamento rastrea los datos con respecto al deshecho y la limpieza!

REPINTADO DE LA CARRETERA WESTERN

Esta semana, los equipos de CalTrans estuvieron en la intersección de Western Ave. y Torrance Blvd. Los equipos repintaron los cruces peatones y otras marcas de la carretera para mejorar la visibilidad y la seguridad de los peatones. RECOGIDA DE HOJAS DE PALMERA

Los vientos de las últimas semanas han derribado ramas de árboles y hojas de palmera en todo el One-Five. Nuestra oficina ha estado presentando solicitudes de servicio cuando las vemos, como aquí en Athens Blvd. ¡Por favor continúe informando cualquier hoja de palmera, rama de árbol o emergencia de árboles a MYLA311.

PROPIEDAD MOLESTA

La semana pasada, el Concejo Municipal aprobó mi resolución para abordar una propiedad molesta en la comunidad de Harbor debido al deshecho ilegal y otras actividades ilegales. El jueves, la Ciudad publicó un aviso en 603 N. Gaffey Pl./708 W. Elberon Ave. para una audiencia probatoria sobre la propiedad. Esta audiencia se llevará a cabo en la Cámara del Consejo el 9 de febrero a partir de las 10 a.m. y la gente puede llamar o presentarse en persona en el Ayuntamiento. Este es solo un ejemplo de lo que la Ciudad puede hacer cuando sabemos que hay una propiedad problemática que representa una molestia en una de nuestras comunidades y vamos a ver esto hasta al final y reducir esta molestia.

ÁREA DE JUEGOS DE PARKWAY PROMENADE

Aunque estaba lloviendo el sábado por la mañana, todavía era un gran día para dedicar la nueva área de juegos Parkway Promenade a lo largo de Harbor Blvd. Esto es lo que diferentes agencias que trabajan juntas pueden lograr. Gracias a la Autoridad de Vivienda de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles (HACLA), el Puerto de Los Ángeles (POLA), el Condado de Los Ángeles y el Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de los Estados Unidos por unirse para financiar y construir este proyecto tan esperado y necesario para nuestros niños del puerto.

INAUGURACIÓN DEL MURAL PARA ADOLESCENTES

El sábado asistí a la inauguración oficial del nuevo mural de Angel's Gate por parte del Club de Adolescentes de AGCC. El mural está dedicado a la individualidad y comunidad que vemos en Angels Gate y en San Pedro, y se exhibirá al lado del Edificio C. Esta finalización del mural coincide con la culminación de la segunda sesión del club de murales para adolescentes tras su exitoso programa piloto en el verano de 2023. Felicitaciones a los maravillosos artistas que conceptualizan y crearon este mural.

ÁRBOL ELIMINADO EN LA CALLE DÉCIMA

Después de la lluvia a principios de esta semana, un árbol cayó en la calle décima entre Pacific y Grand Ave. Ese mismo día, LA Street Services llegó al lugar y quitó el árbol en su totalidad.

REUNIÓN DE LA COMISIÓN DE POLICÍA EN WLCAC

El martes asistí a un excelente evento comunitario cuando la Comisión de Policía celebró una reunión en el Phoenix Hall del WLCAC. Esta fue una oportunidad muy especial para que nuestros residentes hablaran con la Comisión sobre temas de preocupación, intereses, esperanzas y sueños para el futuro de LAPD. Espero con mucho interés la próxima y les doy las gracias tanto a la Comisión como a los residentes por su participación.

PLANTANDO ÁRBOLES

103rd St. consiguió un nuevo árbol gracias a un programa de Dedicación de Árboles en conjunto con Watts Rising y TreePeople. Pedimos el árbol para la comunidad para que vaya creciendo al igual que nuestra oficina. ¡Gracias por este programa Watts Rising!

CÍRCULO DE SANACIÓN

Asistimos a un círculo de curación el viernes pasado organizado por The Reverence Project y Chosen Angels en Imperial Courts. Los círculos de sanación crean un espacio seguro para que los participantes puedan discutir experiencias personales en un ambiente acogedor directamente en su comunidad.

MEJOR COMIENZO

Este jueves asistimos a Best Start Wilmington y fue maravilloso escuchar sobre el papel positivo que desempeña Best Start en el apoyo a los niños y las familias; los esfuerzos de colaboración para garantizar la seguridad, la salud y la preparación de los niños para el aprendizaje, además de brindar acceso a servicios de calidad, contribuyen significativamente. para construir comunidades prósperas.

¡Tenemos un día ajetreado el próximo sábado en el paseo marítimo! ¡Únase a nosotros de 1 a 3 PM para el corte de listón y la gran inauguración del Wilmington Waterfront Promenade! SEÑALES DE CALLE ACTUALIZADAS

Ayer, el Departamento de Transporte de Los Ángeles estuvo en PCH y Wilmington Blvd. sustituyendo la señalización vial. Este es un paso positivo hacia la mejora de la infraestructura comunitaria y puede ayudar a contribuir a mejorar la seguridad, el flujo de tráfico y el desarrollo urbano en general.
