COMMEMORATING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE '94 NORTHRIDGE EARTHQUAKE

This week we solemnly commemorated the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

At 4:31 AM PST on January 17, 1994, an earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the San Fernando Valley and caused severe damage to building foundations, transportation corridors, as well as water, gas, and electrical transmission facilities. The impact of the earthquake ultimately resulted in the death of 60 individuals and injured more than 9,000. The Northridge Earthquake left 82,000 residential and commercial units, and 5,400 mobile homes damaged or destroyed.

30 years later, we think back on the impact the earthquake had on our city and once again renew the call to action for residents to be prepared in the case of an earthquake or any emergency of significant magnitude.

As we look back at the devastation of the '94 earthquake, please consider taking some time to look through resources put together by the Los Angeles Fire Department and the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department to help you get ready and stay prepared for any natural disaster.

Lastly, we welcome you to join Council District 12 for an upcoming earthquake preparedness fair taking place on the Calstate Northridge Campus on February 3 from 10am - 4pm. The Quake Heroes Expo will include a safety fair themed to the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety so that attendees can take immediate actions such as signing up for safety alerts, buying earthquake fasteners and disaster supplies, and learning life-saving skills. The expo will also include a mobile earthquake simulator, raffle prizes, and more.

We hope to see you there!
