March 1, 2024 | | When I’m asked what makes Council District 12 unique, I always say that in large part, it’s because of the many incredible people and organizations dedicated to the well-being of our community. Last weekend, that dedication was on full display. In partnership with Volunteers Cleaning Communities, dozens of neighbors came together for a day of service to help clean up and beautify Devonshire St. | | On Thursday, after decades of service to the Los Angeles Police Department, and nearly six years as its police chief, Michel Moore bid farewell to his role as the department’s top officer. Serving as the Chief of Police for one of the largest police departments in the nation is no easy task but Chief Moore served our city dutifully and helped guide the LAPD during difficult times.
As the Mayor and the Police Commission conduct a nationwide search for the next chief, our city remains in good hands with interim Chief Dominic H. Choi, who was sworn in Friday as LAPD's 58th Chief of Police. A milestone in the city's history, Chief Choi is the first Asian American to lead the department and is someone that I know has the integrity, constitution, and knowledge to keep the Los Angeles Police Department running smoothly. |

| | I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the beginning of Women's History Month. In honor of Women's History Month, here’s a compiled list of just a few women-owned businesses in CD12. Follow this link to see that list. | | | LEGISLATIVE UPDATES | Addressing Sunshine Canyon Landfill Following prolonged complaints about the odors emitting from the Sunshine Canyon Landfill and continuous wet weather, I have instructed the Sunshine Canyon Landfill Local Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Sanitation to report on the work being done to address complaints and what steps are being taken to address the root cause of the odors. | | CD12 COMMUNITY UPDATES | | Overnight Closure of Topanga Canyon BoulevardThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the closure of Topanga Canyon Boulevard (State Route 27) in the San Fernando Valley for bus pad construction. | PORTER RANCH COMMUNITY SCHOOL QUICK UPDATE | | As you know, I have been a stalwart supporter of our community’s private and public schools since the beginning of my career in public service over 20 years ago. Through targeted funding and a variety of programs and resources available to me as your Councilmember, I have always considered our students our most valued constituents and extended an invitation to all of my schools to reach out and ask for help if necessary. More often than not, my answer has been yes and I have funded programs and projects from Robotics programs to school gardens to wellness centers on many of our elementary, middle, and high school campuses. Over the past couple of months, my commitment to our schools came into sharp focus in Porter Ranch.
Numerous Porter Ranch Community School (PRCS) families have expressed concern in the face of the campus reaching capacity as a K-8 Span School. Through recent meetings and town halls, it is clear that the LAUSD and Region North are considering many options to address the capacity challenges, one of which is to move the middle school students to an area high school to accommodate the overcrowding. Given the outpouring of community sentiment against such a solution and my own understanding of PRCS as a true community school for Porter Ranch, I publicly committed funds to support the district in considering options that would allow the school to remain intact and in perpetuity, as it was intended when we cut the ribbon on the school in 2012.
I understand that the District is working diligently to finalize a PRCS plan going forward and it is my hope that the community's overwhelming desire to keep our kids at PRCS, along with my unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the K-8 program there, will result in a sensible solution as we work with our partners at Region North in the coming months. | | COMMUNITY CALENDAR |
