Throughout February we’ve been celebrating Black History Month in the One-Five! It’s been a time when we honor the achievements of our district and our city’s Black residents and celebrate their contributions in shaping Los Angeles.

We have some incredible organizations and groups doing the work to uplift our neighbors here in the district. From the Sisters of Watts, the Eastside Bike Riders and the NAACP, to individuals like Dr. Cynthia ‘Big Mama’ Mendenhall, Quan Wilson, Tim Watkins and Pastor Adam Stevenson - we have great Black leaders in the One-Five, dedicated to empowering and elevating our residents. We’re stronger together because of you.

You may remember last year we put up Black History Month banners for the first time in the district’s history in San Pedro on Mesa St. from 3rd to 7th St. The idea originally came from Tyris Hatchett, a crisis intervention worker at Toberman Neighborhood Center. He approached Pastor Adam Stevenson at Warren Chapel CME Church in San Pedro who came to me and I jumped at the chance to support.

This year we went BIG and you can see Black History Month street banners beyond San Pedro and throughout the One-Five! From Watts through the Gateway, to Harbor City, San Pedro and Wilmington, we’ve got them in each of our 5 communities. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard in the One-Five and it is my hope that when you drive around your neighborhood, you see these banners and feel both seen, heard, and appreciated.

Nuisance abatement-related enforcement in the City of Los Angeles has, over time, grown to include multiple layers of disjointed departmental review and responsibility in the matters relating to the enforcement of nuisance and abatement proceedings. In practice, City departments and offices appear to lack clarity in governance when it comes to which entity has the authority to initiate or engage in proceedings, as well as alternative procedures for this process. On Wednesday I introduced a motion, supported by 5 of my colleagues, to look into ways including policy options and code amendments to streamline these matters.

CLEAN 15

Check out these Before and Afters of our Clean 15 Team’s work! This week, we’re highlighting the team’s hard work helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in San Pedro and Watts! Please report illegal dumping to MyLA311, but you can also report requests to our district offices. PMA TOUR

On Wednesday, I took a tour of the PMA/ILWU maintenance and repair training facility, currently under construction at Pier 400. Harbor Commission Vice President Diane Middleton, ILWU Local 13 President Gary Herrera, and PMA representatives were on hand to see the progress. As port operations continue to transition to clean, sustainable tech, it is imperative that we advocate to retain the good jobs we have, and retrain and up-skill our workers in the new equipment. This center will empower workers to adapt, maintain and repair zero-emission technologies efficiently and productively.

CHARLES DREW UNIVERSITY

This Thursday I took a tour of the Charles Drew Medical Center/MLK Life Sciences Hospital to discuss opportunities for students, residents and businesses within the One-Five that can benefit from the life science industry growth. We are lucky to have such a prestigious university right next-door.

The ONE•FIVE is made up of 5 distinct communities that add so much to our district. See below for specific updates for each of the neighborhoods.

WEED REMOVAL

Due to the recent rains there has been an influx of weeds along our roads. Thanks to the LA Conservation Corps. for cleaning up Western Ave. near Narbonne High School on Thursday.

GRAFFITI REMOVAL

Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) assisted with graffiti removal on major thoroughfares this week in Harbor City. You can report graffiti for removal to 311 or call our office.

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

The community gathered and brought up local issues at the Harbor City Neighborhood Council meeting on Wednesday night. Our office was in attendance to listen to constituents and discuss community updates. The HCNC meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Harbor City Library 24000 Western Ave.

COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD IN THE GATEWAY

The Harbor Community Police Advisory Board normally meets at the Harbor Police Station, but this month, it was brought to the Gateway for the first time! I joined in to listen to community concerns, get updates from LAPD on all their work throughout Harbor Division, and to present and answer questions. I am glad to say that Harbor C-PAB meetings will be moving throughout the south end of the One-Five this year with the next one scheduled for Wilmington on April 4th.

STREETLIGHTS FIXED

We are happy to report that the streetlights on 133rd and 134th St. from Vermont Ave. to Hoover St. have been repaired by the Bureau of Street Lighting. Streetlight vandalism has been on the rise, so please report malfunctioning or inoperable streetlights to MyLA311 or our office so that we can work on repairs!

ILLEGAL DUMPING

This week, two containers full of dirt were illegally dumped on 117th and Figueroa St. Our office sprung into action and removed the containers. Please report any illegal dumping to MYLA311 so that the Department of Sanitation can remove it.

GAFFEY PLACE MEETING

I met with residents from the neighborhood surrounding the property at 603 N. Gaffey Place. We discussed the current steps the city is taking to abate the declared nuisance property. I am grateful for the support of the community as we work diligently to address this issue.

INCREASE ONCOMING TRAFFIC VISIBILITY

The fence by the 110 Freeway alongside the 47 Freeway and Summerland Place is obstructing the visibility of oncoming traffic from the 47 offramp. We met with Sanitation this week, and they will be moving the fence in order to create greater visibility of traffic exiting the 47 freeway onto Gaffey Street.

SAN PEDRO COMMUNITY GARDEN CLEANUP

We arranged a community clean up for the San Pedro Community Gardens this weekend. Thanks to Athens Services for donating a large bin to accommodate for green waste that has been accumulating within the community garden plots. If you have a garden plot, you can bring your green waste to the bin by the mulch pile between now and Sunday night.

CULTURE FEST

We have such great artistic and creative talent in Watts and it’s events like Watts Culture Fest at the WLCAC this past Saturday that give us an opportunity to bring everyone together to highlight our incredible community. From food to arts and goods, the Fest was as unique and special as Watts. Looking forward to the next one already!

OFFICE OF FINANCE IN THE CIVIC CENTER

The Office of Finance is holding a popup location in the Watts Civic Center. They're here to help you with business tax resources and more. They are open Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. And starting in March they are only here the last Thursday of every month 1 PM - 4 PM. Visit at 1513 E. 103rd St.

SOUTHEAST SPANISH COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD

On Tuesday night, we attended the Southeast Spanish Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) where the National Guard came to do a presentation on Fentanyl with the help of LAPD Southeast/ South Bureau. We are hopeful that the participation at C-PABs will continue to grow. Next month the Mayor’s Office will present on the MYLA311 app. The next Spanish C-PAB meeting will be at St. Lawrence of Brindisi on March 19th.

COMMUNITY MEETING

On Thursday we came together at Harbor Christian Center with residents from the northern area of Wilmington to hear concerns from the residents and had a special presentation from our Clean 15 Team on all the great work they do in the district.

LAFD BATTALION 6 GRADUATION

We were honored to attend the Battalion 6 Community Emergency Response Team's graduation. The Community Emergency Response Team’s 7-week course aims to provide community volunteers with basic skills necessary to minimize the impact of emergencies of all types in our community.

TZU CHI COMMUNITY CLINIC

On Saturday, we celebrated the Year of the Dragon and Lunar New Year with a Solar Power Launch at Tzu Chi Community Clinic in Wilmington. The Tzu Chi Foundation has been providing compassion and care in Wilmington for over 30 years, serving those who fall below the poverty line, providing cash cards, essential supplies, and more while striving to build a better world for all. Saturday was an extra special celebration as we flipped the switch for their solar panels and battery storage system, which marks a significant milestone in their commitment to sustainability and clean energy. Thank you for having me!

¡Durante todo febrero hemos estado celebrando el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana en el One-Five! Ha sido un momento en el que honramos los logros de nuestro distrito y de los residentes afroamericanos de nuestra ciudad y celebramos sus contribuciones a la configuración de Los Ángeles.

Contamos con algunas organizaciones y grupos increíbles que trabajan para animar a nuestros vecinos aquí en el distrito. Desde las Hermanas de Watts, los Eastside Bike Riders y la NAACP, hasta personas como la Dra. Cynthia 'Big Mama' Mendenhall, Quan Wilson, Tim Watkins y el pastor Adam Stevenson: tenemos grandes líderes afroamericanos en el Uno-Cinco, dedicados a empoderar y elevar a nuestros residentes. Quizás recuerde que el año pasado colocamos carteles del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana por primera vez en la historia del distrito en San Pedro en Mesa St. de 3rd a 7th St. La idea surgió originalmente de Tyris Hatchett, un trabajador de intervención en crisis en Toberman Neighborhood Center. Todos merecen ser vistos y escuchados en el One-Five y espero que cuando conduzca por su vecindario, vea estos carteles y se sienta vistos, escuchados y apreciados.

Con el tiempo, la aplicación de la ley relacionada con la reducción de molestias en la ciudad de Los Ángeles ha crecido. Incluye múltiples niveles de revisión y responsabilidad departamental en los asuntos relacionados con los procedimientos de reducción de palacion de molestias. En la práctica, los departamentos y oficinas de la Ciudad parecen carecer de claridad en la gobernanza cuando se trata de qué entidad tiene la autoridad para iniciar o participar en procedimientos, así como procedimientos alternativos para este proceso. El miércoles presenté una moción, apoyado por 5 de mis colegas, para buscar formas de incluir opciones políticas y enmiendas al código para simplificar estos asuntos.

ACTUALIZACIONES

EQUIPO CLEAN 15

RECORRIDO DEL PMA

El miércoles, hice un recorrido por las instalaciones de capacitación en mantenimiento y reparación de PMA/ILWU, actualmente en construcción en el Muelle 400. La vicepresidenta de la Comisión Portuaria, Diane Middleton, el presidente del Local 13 de ILWU, Gary Herrera, y representantes de la PMA estuvieron presentes para ver el progreso. A medida que las operaciones portuarias continúan la transición hacia tecnologías limpias y sostenibles, es imperativo que aboguemos por conservar los buenos empleos que tenemos y volver a capacitar y mejorar las habilidades de nuestros trabajadores en los nuevos equipos. Este centro capacitará a los trabajadores para adaptar, mantener y reparar tecnologías de cero emisiones de manera eficiente y productiva.

UNIVERSIDAD CHARLES DREW

Este jueves hice un recorrido por el Centro Médico Charles Drew/Hospital de Ciencias Biológicas MLK para analizar las oportunidades para los residentes y las empresas dentro de One-Five que pueden beneficiarse del crecimiento de la industria de las ciencias biológicas.

El ONE•FIVE está compuesto por 5 comunidades distintas que aportan mucho a nuestro distrito. Consulte a continuación las actualizaciones específicas para cada uno de los vecindarios.

ELIMINACIÓN DE MALEZAS

Debido a las recientes lluvias ha habido una afluencia de maleza a lo largo de nuestros caminos. Gracias al Cuerpo de Conservación de Los Ángeles. para limpiar Western Ave. cerca de Narbonne High School el jueves.

ELIMINACIÓN DE GRAFFITI

El Programa de Alternativas a Pandillas (GAP, por sus siglas en inglés) ayudó con la eliminación de graffiti en las principales vías esta semana en Harbor City. Puede reportar graffiti para su eliminación al 311 o llamar a nuestra oficina.

CONSEJO DE VECINDARIO

La comunidad se reunió y planteó cuestiones locales en la reunión del Consejo Vecinal de Harbor City el miércoles por la noche. Nuestra oficina estuvo presente para escuchar a los electores y discutir las actualizaciones de la comunidad. El HCNC se reúne cada tercer miércoles de cada mes en la biblioteca de Harbor City, 24000 Western Ave.

C-PAB EN HARBOR GATEWAY

La Junta Asesora de Policía Comunitaria normalmente se reúne en la estación de policía del puerto, pero esta semana, ¡fue llevada a Gateway por primera vez! Me uní para escuchar las inquietudes de la comunidad, así como las actualizaciones de LAPD sobre todo su arduo trabajo en toda la División Harbor. Las reuniones del C-PAB se trasladarán a través del One-Five este año y la próxima está programada para Wilmington el 4 de abril.

REPARACION DE LAMPARAS PUBLICAS

Estamos muy contentos de informar que las lamparas publicas de las calles 133 y 134 desde Vermont Ave. hasta Hoover St. han sido reparadas por la Oficina de Alumbrado Público. El vandalismo de las lamparas ha aumentado, así que reporten las lamparas que funcionan mal o que no funcionan a MyLA311 o a nuestra oficina para que podamos trabajar en las reparaciones.

VERTEDERO ILEGAL

Esta semana, dos contenedores llenos de tierra fueron arrojados ilegalmente en 117 y Figueroa St. Nuestra oficina entró en acción y retiró los contenedores. Reporten cualquier vertido ilegal a MYLA311 para que el Departamento de Saneamiento pueda eliminarlo.

REUNIÓN DEL LUGAR GAFFEY

Me reuní con residentes del vecindario que rodea la propiedad en 603 N. Gaffey Place. Discutimos los pasos actuales que la ciudad está tomando para reducir la molestia de la propiedad declarada. Agradezco el apoyo de la comunidad mientras trabajamos diligentemente para abordar este problema.

AUMENTAR LA VISIBILIDAD DEL TRÁFICO EN CONTRA

La cerca a lo largo de la 47 y Summerland Place está obstruyendo la visibilidad del tráfico que viene en sentido contrario desde la salida de la 47. Nos reunimos con Sanitation esta semana y ellos moverán la cerca para crear una mayor visibilidad del tráfico que sale de la autopista 47 hacia Gaffey Street.

LIMPIEZA DEL JARDÍN COMUNITARIO DE SAN PEDRO

Organizamos una limpieza comunitaria para los jardines comunitarios de San Pedro este fin de semana. Gracias a Atenas Services por donar un contenedor grande para acomodar los desechos verdes que se han estado acumulando dentro de las parcelas de jardín comunitario. Si tiene una parcela de jardín, puede llevar sus desechos verdes al contenedor junto a la pila de mantillo desde ahora hasta el domingo por la noche.

FIESTA DE LA CULTURA

Tenemos un gran talento artístico y creativo en Watts y eventos como Watts Culture Fest en el WLCAC el sábado pasado nos brindan la oportunidad de reunir a todos para resaltar nuestra increíble comunidad. Desde comida hasta arte y bienes, el Festival fue tan único y especial como Watts. ¡Espero con ansias el próximo!

OFICINA DE FINANZAS EN EL CENTRO CÍVICO

La Oficina de Finanzas organizó un “popup” en el Centro Cívico Watts. Están aquí para ayudarle con recursos de impuestos comerciales y más. Ellos abren los martes y jueves de 8:30 AM a 3:30 PM. Y a partir de marzo solo están aquí el último jueves de cada mes de 1:00 PM a 4:00 PM. Visita en 1513 E. 103rd St.

JUNTA ASESORA COMUNITARIA DE LA POLICÍA DEL SURESTE

El martes por la noche, asistimos a la Junta Asesora Comunitaria de la Policía del Sureste (C-PAB), donde la Guardia Nacional vino a hacer una presentación sobre el fentanilo con la ayuda de la Oficina Sureste/Sur de LAPD. Tenemos la esperanza de que la participación en los C-PAB siga creciendo. El próximo mes la Oficina del Alcalde presentará la aplicación MYLA311. La próxima reunión del C-PAB será en San Lorenzo de Brindisi el 19 de marzo.

REUNIÓN DE LA COMUNIDAD

El jueves nos reunimos en Harbor Christian Center con residentes del área norte de Wilmington para escuchar las inquietudes de los residentes y tuvimos una presentación especial de nuestro equipo Clean 15 sobre todo el excelente trabajo que realizan en el distrito.

GRADUACIÓN DEL BATALLÓN LAFD 6

Tuvimos el honor de asistir a la graduación del Equipo Comunitario de Respuesta a Emergencias del Batallón 6. El curso de 7 semanas del Equipo Comunitario de Respuesta a Emergencias tiene como objetivo proporcionar a los voluntarios de la comunidad las habilidades básicas necesarias para minimizar el impacto de emergencias de todo tipo en nuestra comunidad.

CLÍNICA COMUNITARIA TZU CHI

El sábado celebramos el Año del Dragón y el Año Nuevo Lunar con un lanzamiento de energía solar en la Clínica Comunitaria Tzu Chi en Wilmington. La Fundación Tzu Chi ha brindado compasión y atención en Wilmington durante más de 30 años, sirviendo a quienes se encuentran por debajo del umbral de pobreza, brindando tarjetas de efectivo, suministros esenciales y más, mientras se esfuerza por construir un mundo mejor para todos. El sábado fue una celebración muy especial cuando activamos el interruptor de sus paneles solares y sistema de almacenamiento de baterías, lo que marca una meta importante en su compromiso con la sostenibilidad y la energía limpia. ¡Gracias por tenerme!
