Yesterday I had the honor of hosting in City Council Chambers the 2023 CIF Los Angeles City Section Division 1 Football Champions for the 2022-2023 season - the Mighty Pilots of Banning High School! And with them, the amazing Pilot Marching Band, Cheer, Drill Team and Tall Flags who put on a stellar performance to introduce the team! |

This is the Pilots’ 13th City Section Football Championship, the second highest amount in the LA Unified School District. The team comes with both an incredible fan base and a fantastic coach. We were honored to have Div. 1 City Section Coach of the Year Raymond Grajeda with us in Chambers, along with Athletic Director Janet Furuya and Principal Adela Retana.
This is a team that I got a chance to see several times during the course of the year and the atmosphere of being in the stands with the Wilmington community, cheering on our young men was electric.
It’s so crucial to support our youth in sports and we have such great school programs in the One-Five. These young athletes spend hours a week outside of their important classroom activities, representing not just their schools but their communities. And as a community, we come together to root for our family members, friends, and neighbors.

LAFD has four HAZ MAT stations throughout the City and only one of them is fully staffed while the others are assigned “flex” staffing where personnel perform functions other than HAZ MAT operations. Given the recent explosion that occurred in Wilmington and the potential for other devastating incidents throughout the City, yesterday I introduced a motion to determine if the LAFD is appropriately staffed and equipped to meet HAZ MAT challenges. The Fire Department will be reporting to Council to discuss how HAZ MAT teams are assigned and staffed citywide; and whether they are sufficiently staffed and equipped to address large and/or multiple HAZ MAT incidents simultaneously. |

PRAYERS FOR OUR LAFD FAMILY |

On Thursday morning as an LA City Fire Department Task Force was responding to a fire in Wilmington on a tractor trailer with pressurized tanks, an explosion occurred injuring 9 firefighters, with 2 in critical condition. Battalion 13 and its many resources have secured the scene but please continue to avoid the area.
I’m grateful for the brave first responders of our fire department who arrived quickly to contain the situation, racing towards danger to protect our community. It’s a reminder of how dangerous this job is and how selfless and courageous these first responders are. Please join me in praying for these firefighters and their families, and the LA City Fire Department family. |

STOLEN PLAQUE ARRESTS |

The heartless theft of these memorial plaques was an insult to the heroes and families who built this region through the fishing industry, moved goods as part of the ILWU, and protected our country during the war as Merchant Marine sailors.
I was told that when the suspects were arrested on Tuesday, they also had stolen bronze cemetery markers in their possession. This criminal act brazenly disrespected and violated our community with no bounds. I’m grateful to the Port of Los Angeles, the Port Police, and their partners for their hard work in finding the suspects responsible who put their own selfish interests over our community. STORM UPDATES |

The National Weather Service reports another storm system is approaching Southern California and will make landfall in the County of Los Angeles starting today February 17th through Wednesday, February 21st. Although anticipated rainfall totals are less significant than the last storm, similar impacts are expected due to saturated soil levels. It is expected that the most significant levels of rainfall are expected to start on Sunday night through Monday, increasing the risk of significant flooding and mudslides/debris flows. If you see flooding, fallen trees, or other significant damage that isn’t immediately life threatening, report it via 311. |

WORKING TOGETHER IN PREPARATION |

Our office worked with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway to prepare a local business in Harbor City for the next rain. Mud entered the business during the last storm so they reached out to our office to get assistance before the next storm. |

Harbor City Recreation Center got freshened up with some new paint this week. Thank you to the Department of Recreation and Parks for keeping our local parks in great shape! |

Yesterday the 186th Street School celebrated their 20th annual Peace March! Students made signs promoting peace and marched around the school for a better tomorrow. Thank you to the Wise Owls for being an example of leadership in our community of the Gateway! |

CalTrans completed a cleanup right off the off-ramp of the 405 and Normandie exit. Our team is consistently reporting issues on the CalTrans right of way areas, but please make a Customer Service Request if you would like to report one here. |

SOCALGAS MAINTENANCE COMPLETED |

Residents may have noticed that work was being done on the street along Figueroa near 117th St., which reduced traffic lanes on both sides. SoCalGas was completing routine pipe maintenance and they have finished their work! |

BARTON HILL ATTENDANCE CELEBRATION |

On Wednesday morning I had the privilege of being with Barton Hill Elementary to honor the students with perfect attendance in the first 100 days of school. I also want to shout out the Barton Hill, and all the One-Five, parents for your hard work in helping support our kids. From getting up earlier to help your kids get ready, to spending time packing meals the night before or morning of, to rearranged schedules and carpool drivers, their success is due to you. |

FALLEN TREE |

A tree fell from Leland Park on Saturday evening onto Gaffey St. just before Summerland, blocking all four lanes. Thanks to the quick work of Urban Forestry workers of Street Services, we were able to reopen Gaffey Street later that night a little after 1 AM. No injuries or damage, thanks also to the good work of LAPD officers who secured the site until the emergency crew could arrive. |

CABRILLO BEACH LAND MOVEMENT |

LA County Lifeguards observed and reported some land movement on the cliffs above the wooden walking path at Cabrillo Beach on Saturday morning. The area below the affected cliffs continues to be closed and the Department of Building and Safety is monitoring the hillside area. Especially given the upcoming rain, we’re asking folks to stay clear of the rocks and the tide pools. Thanks to LAFD, LAPD, Port Police, and the lifeguards for being on the scene so quickly to assess the scene and keeping this area safe and secure. |

SOUP-ER BOWL |

On Saturday I joined the Garden Church for their “Soup-er Bowl” fundraiser co-organized with Blend and Befriend. This great event supported Meals on Wheels. Beautiful handmade bowls were donated by Blue Water Clay and filled with delicious soups donated by Blend and Befriend and Chori Man, with bread donated by La Befana and mushrooms donated by Cliffside Mushrooms. |

On Saturday we participated in the Jordan Downs Community Walking Audit. It was a great opportunity to gather and discuss ways to improve the walkability and access through eventual grant implementations with Urbano Strategies. |

SCHOOL SAFETY COLLABORATIVE MEETING |
 |
Led by the Urban Peace Institute, parents of students throughout Watts came together to discuss plans to see quality of life issues improve through various resources including our office, LAUSD, the State of California, and the LAPD. For those who would like to attend, the next meeting will be March 18 at Markham Middle School Library. |

HONORING PRINCIPAL HERNANDEZ |

On Friday, we honored Principal Jose Hernandez of 112th Street Steam Academy for his great work supporting his students and the surrounding community. Principal Hernandez was the brains behind the Lion Walk Program in which he and other staff members make themselves available to walk with students to school and around different parts of the campus. |

GULF AND OPP INTERSECTION |

The area in Wilmington that suffered a sinkhole last week, the intersection of Gulf Ave. and Opp St., has re-opened. There is more work to be done and teams are ready to come out if we have problems during this upcoming storm but as of now the intersection is open to cars and residents will be able to park on their street. |

Last week our office met with LA Walks, Promotoras and mothers at Hawaiian Elementary school. By working together, we’re grateful to these organizations and mothers who are committed to promoting a safe, accessible and enjoyable walking experience for all residents in our community. |

We had a great turnout at Synesthesia Boutique last Thursday for Coffee with a Cop! These events are a great way for public safety officers to connect with the community they serve and residents have the opportunity to ask questions, express concern, and build positive relationships. |

Este es el 13º Campeonato de Fútbol de la Sección Municipal de los Banning High School Pilots, la segunda cantidad más alta en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles. El equipo cuenta con una base de aficionados increíble y un entrenador fantástico. Tuvimos el honor de contar con el Entrenador del Año Div. 1 de la Sección de la Ciudad Raymond Grajeda con nosotros en la Cámara , junto con la Directora Atlética Janet Furuya y la Directora Adela Retana.
Este es un equipo que tuve la oportunidad de ver varias veces durante el año y la atmósfera de estar en las gradas con la comunidad de Wilmington, echandole porras a nuestros jóvenes fue eléctrico.
Es fundamental apoyar a nuestros jóvenes en los deportes y tenemos programas escolares excelentes en el One-Five. Estos jóvenes atletas pasan horas a la semana fuera de sus tareas escolares y actividades, representando no sólo a sus escuelas sino a sus comunidades. Y como comunidad, nos unimos para apoyar a nuestros familiares, amigos y vecinos.

LAFD tiene cuatro estaciones HAZ MAT en toda la ciudad y solo una de ellas cuenta con personal completo, mientras que a las otras se les asigna personal "flexible" donde el personal realiza funciones distintas a las operaciones de HAZ MAT. Dada la reciente explosión que ocurrió en Wilmington y el potencial de otros incidentes devastadores en toda la ciudad, ayer presenté una moción para determinar si el LAFD cuenta con el personal y equipo adecuado para enfrentar los desafíos de HAZ MAT. El Departamento de Bomberos informará al Consejo para discutir cómo asignan personal los equipos de HAZ MAT en toda la ciudad; y si cuentan con suficiente personal y equipo para abordar incidentes grandes y/o múltiples de HAZ MAT simultáneamente. |

ORACIONES PARA LA FAMILIA DE LAFD |

El jueves por la mañana, mientras nuestro grupo operativo del Departamento de Bomberos de la ciudad de Los Ángeles respondía a un incendio en Wilmington de un camión con remolque con tanques presurizados, produjo una explosión que hirió a 9 bomberos, 2 de ellos en estado crítico. El Batallón 13 y sus numerosos recursos han asegurado la escena, pero eviten el área.
Estoy agradecido por los valientes rescatistas de nuestro departamento de bomberos que llegaron rápidamente para contener la situación, corriendo hacia el peligro para proteger a nuestra comunidad. Es un recordatorio de lo peligroso que es este trabajo y de lo valientes que son estos rescatistas. Únase a mí para orar por estos bomberos y sus familias, y por la familia del Departamento de Bomberos de la ciudad de Los Ángeles. |

DETENCIONES POR PLACAS ROBADAS |

El robo insensible de placas conmemorativas es un insulto a los héroes y las familias que construyeron esta región a través de la industria pesquera, el traslado de mercancías con el ILWU y los marineros de la Marina mercante que protegieron a nuestro país durante la guerra.
Me dijeron que cuando los sospechosos fueron arrestados el martes, también tenían en su poder lápidas de bronce robadas del cementerio. Este acto criminal descaradamente fue una deshonra y falta de respeto a nuestra comunidad. Agradezco al Puerto de Los Ángeles, a la Policía Portuaria y a sus socios por su arduo trabajo para encontrar a los sospechosos responsables que antepusieron sus propios intereses egoístas a nuestra comunidad. ACTUALIZACIONES DE TORMENTA |

El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional informa que otro sistema de tormentas se acerca al sur de California y tocará tierra en el condado de Los Ángeles hoy 17 de Febrero hasta el miércoles 21 de Febrero. Aunque los totales de lluvia previstos son menos significativos que los de la última tormenta, se esperan impactos similares debido a los niveles saturados del suelo. Se espera que los niveles más significativos de lluvia comienzan el domingo por la noche hasta el lunes, lo que aumenta el riesgo de inundaciones importantes y deslizamientos de tierra/flujos de escombros. Si ve inundaciones, árboles caídos o otros daños significativos que no pongan en peligro la vida de inmediato, reportelo a través del 311. |

¡Ayer la primaria de la Calle 186 celebró su vigésima Marcha Anual por la Paz! Los estudiantes hicieron carteles promoviendo la paz y marcharon alrededor de la escuela por un futuro mejor. ¡Gracias a los Wise Owls por ser un ejemplo de liderazgo en nuestra comunidad! |

CELEBRAMOS LA ASISTENCIA PERFECTA DE BARTON HILL |

El miércoles por la mañana tuve el privilegio de estar con la Primaria Barton Hill para honrar a los estudiantes con asistencia perfecta en los primeros 100 días de clases. También quiero agradecer a los padres de Barton Hill y a todos los del One-Five por su arduo trabajo para ayudar a mantener a nuestros hijos. Desde levantarse más temprano para ayudar a sus hijos a prepararse, hasta dedicar tiempo para preparar las comidas la noche anterior o la mañana siguiente, hasta reorganizar horarios y compartir conductores, su éxito se debe a usted. |

ARBOL CAIDO |
|
Un árbol cayó desde Leland Park el sábado hacia la calle de Gaffey, justo antes de la calle Summerland, bloqueando los cuatro carriles. Gracias al rápido trabajo de los trabajadores de Urban Forestry de Street Services, pudimos reabrir la calle de Gaffey esa noche, poco después de la 1 AM. No hubo heridos ni daños, gracias también al buen trabajo de los agentes del LAPD que aseguraron el lugar hasta que llegó el equipo de emergencia. |

MOVIMIENTO DE TIERRA EN PLAYA CABRILLO |
|
Los salvavidas del condado de Los Ángeles observaron e informaron algunos movimientos de tierra en las barrancas sobre el camino de madera en Cabrillo Beach el sábado por la mañana. El área debajo de las barrancas estará cerrada y el Departamento de Construcción y Seguridad está monitoreando el área de la ladera. Especialmente dada la próxima lluvia, pedimos a la gente que se mantenga alejada de las rocas y los charcos de marea. Gracias a LAFD, LAPD, la policía portuaria y los salvavidas por estar en el lugar tan rápido para evaluar el lugar y mantener esta área segura. |

ENCUENTRO COLABORATIVO DE SEGURIDAD ESCOLAR |

Dirigidos por el Instituto Urban Peace, los padres de estudiantes de todo Watts se reunieron para hablar sobre planes para mejorar la calidad de vida a través de diversos recursos, incluyendo nuestra oficina, LAUSD, el estado de California y el LAPD. Para aquellos que deseen asistir, la próxima reunión será el 18 de marzo en la biblioteca de la escuela secundaria Markham. |

HOMENAJE AL DIRECTOR HERNÁNDEZ |

El viernes honramos al director Jose Hernández de la Academia STEAM de la Calle 112 por su gran trabajo apoyando a sus estudiantes, la comunidad y sus alrededores. El director Hernández fue el cerebro detrás del programa Lion Walk en el que él y otros miembros del personal están disponibles para caminar con los estudiantes a la escuela y por diferentes partes de las instalaciones. |

El área de WIlmington que sufrió un hundimiento la semana pasada, en la intersección de Gulf Ave. y Opp St., ha reabierto. Hay más trabajo por hacer y los equipos están listos para salir si tenemos problemas durante esta próxima tormenta, pero a partir de ahora la intersección está abierta a los automóviles y los residentes podrán estacionar en su calle. |

COORDINACIÓN DE SEGURIDAD PEATONAL |

La semana pasada nuestra oficina se reunió con LA Walks, Promotoras y las madres de la escuela primaria Hawaiian. Trabajamos juntos, y estamos agradecidos con estas organizaciones y con las madres que se comprometen a promover una experiencia de caminata segura, accesible y agradable para todos los residentes de nuestra comunidad. |

¡Tuvimos una gran participación en Synesthesia Boutique el jueves pasado con el evento de Café con un policía!
