Council District 1 has some of the most popular sidewalk vending corridors in Los Angeles. Earlier this month, we put forward a package of legislation to create programming and resources to fill some of the existing gaps in services and ensure vendors have the support they need to thrive.
In this legislative package, City departments, including the Economic Workforce Development Department, the Bureau of Street Services, the Planning Department, LA Sanitation, and the Office of Finance were instructed to conduct listening and resource sessions for vendors in District 1. These sessions would provide information about local rules and regulations, and ensure that the City hears directly from vendors about their experiences and the issues they are facing. Additionally, those departments were instructed to create recommendations for improving sidewalk vending policies and programs based on the feedback provided by vendors during the sessions, and to generate maps of where vending is permitted throughout the District.
We’ve also allocated $20,000 to cover the cost of the City Sidewalk Vending permit fees for vendors who are referred by District 1 and are creating resource sessions to assist vendors with navigating the permit process.
