Yesterday we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day early by bringing Irish Step Dancers from Lyons Dance Academy of San Pedro into Council Chambers! They helped us perfectly kick start one of my favorite holidays. You may know this day as a time where we wear green, threaten to pinch those who don’t, and pay tribute to leprechauns. But this holiday is much more; it has great significance for Irish people around the world. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people.

Beyond the folklore and history of St. Patrick, this day symbolizes the significance of Irish culture and its people across the world. Irish immigrants who entered the United States from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries were both changed by America, and also changed this country. Irish immigrants and their descendants have made invaluable contributions in American politics, organized labor, literature, music, film and art.

A unique recognition of St. Patrick’s Day continues this afternoon, in the heart of San Pedro’s Little Italy, as we celebrate our second annual “Gaelic & Garlic” from 3-7 PM. Spend the afternoon with us and watch Irish Dancers and Italian Elvis perform, eat corned beef with a side of spaghetti & meatballs, and enjoy shamrock cookies with some cannoli!

Yesterday the Council approved my motion instructing the Department of City Planning, in consultation with the City Attorney, to prepare and present an ordinance to amend language around one of our land use policies. We have a number of great community gardens in the One-Five, located in virtually every zoning designation. However, the current land use rules, probably unintentionally, prohibits the selling of this fresh produce where the food is grown. I want to change that rule: we need to allow limited sales and distribution of produce at the site where it is grown. These limited sales would be good for the farmers, and for the community that surrounds the local farm. I was grateful to see farmers through the District, from Watts to the Harbor Area, in Chambers to support amending this ordinance. We will continue to keep you updated on the progress.

CLEAN 15

HARBOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE TOUR

On Thursday I joined Mayor Karen Bass, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan and the Port of LA on a tour of the Wilmington Waterfront and the Harbor, discussing available federal grants and investments in zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure, air quality planning projects and enhanced efforts to protect the health of communities near our Port. We will pursue these grant funds, so that the Port can work to fully and timely meet our sustainability goals. We must at the same time make sure that we work to retain the good jobs we have, and retrain and up-skill our workers in the new equipment. We can have both a clean environment and a strong economy.

REPAIR ZONES

Now through April 7 community members in Harbor City-Harbor Gateway-Wilmington will be able to vote on which program proposals the City should fund for their community. Proposals were submitted by local nonprofit organizations in response to ideas generated within the community last fall. The LA Department of Civil Rights is hosting a fair on Sunday, March 17, from 11 AM - 2 PM at the Wilmington Recreation Center where voters can learn about the proposals before making selections on the ballot. A voter guide and information about where to vote is available at repair.lacity.gov. Voting will also be available online and at other in-person events sponsored by the City.

READ ACROSS AMERICA

On Monday I had the pleasure of reading to Universal Transitional Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes at Normont Elementary for Read Across America. I read Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? and Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Thank you to Ms. Anguiano and Ms. Mancia for having me read to your classes!

BIXBY AVE. & PCH STREET REPAIR

A large street repair was made to Bixby Ave. and PCH by the City’s Bureau of Street Services. This road has been a consistent issue due to the heavy traffic and bus routes so our office is working with Street Services and Metro on a more permanent solution to this road deterioration.

GRAFFITI REMOVAL

Help us report graffiti by reporting it to 311. The faster we can remove graffiti, especially on trees, the faster we can reduce damage from the chemicals in the paint.

STREET RESURFACING

A few months ago, a portion of 117th St. just west of Main St. was resurfaced, and as a result, the speed humps that were on the street were removed. This weekend, Street Services is reinstalling the speed humps. Construction should be completed by next week.

EASTER AT NORMANDALE REC CENTER

Join us on Saturday, March 30th at Normandale Recreation Center for their annual Spring Egg Hunt. There will be arts and crafts, food, inflatables and more!

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEANUP

This week, the Department of Sanitation responded to an illegal dump on Lanzit Ave. and was able to clear it as soon as it was reported. Our office is constantly in the community monitoring streets and reporting illegal dumping via 311. We encourage our constituents to also use 311 and contact our office for assistance!

MACHISTA ARREST

Thanks to the great work of the South Bureau Homicide Detectives and the community members who came forward to report tips, LAPD arrested the alleged shooter at the Machista Bar in San Pedro last Thursday, and she has been charged by the District Attorney’s office. This arrest is important to both the family and friends of Tyrone Tyars and our entire community, which has been deeply disturbed by this senseless act of violence. Tyrone’s young life was cut far too short and the pain that his partner, children, loved ones, and friends have gone through is unimaginable. It is my hope that this arrest brings accountability and justice to his memory.

STREET LIGHTS RELIT

We’re excited to share that the lights have been rewired and are back on the Elberon Bridge, the historic Gaffey St. bridge, and all along Gaffey St. This is a beautiful entrance coming into San Pedro and now it’s lit for everyone to see its beauty.

CELEBRATING WOMEN LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY

It was my pleasure to join the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce to honor six women who have proven exemplary leadership within our community. Congratulations to Maria Acuna of Rainbow Services; Mary Arzuman of San Pedro Relay for Life; April Jones of the San Pedro SkatePark Association; Mary Julienne of Willenberg Career and Transition Center; Nicole Padilla of the American Youth Soccer Organization; and Dianne Middleton, LA Harbor Commissioner!

LA HARBOR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

I attended the Grand Opening of the LA Harbor International Film Festival and saw the premier of the oral history project “Stories of Los Angeles Harbor Area: For Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow”. DOLPHINS FOOTBALL

It was a packed house on Saturday at the Children's Institute (CII) for the Watts Dolphins' annual banquet. These players have worked so hard throughout this season and this was a chance to have a little fun before the new season ramps up. Shout out to Big J and all of the coaches who dedicate so much time to these young men!

WATTS NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

We attended the Watts Neighborhood Council Meeting at the WLCAC Tuesday evening. The meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month and are a great opportunity for residents to have a say in what is going on in their neighborhood. JORDAN DOWNS COMMUNITY MURAL

Urbano Strategies, in collaboration with The Michaels Organization, is excited to announce the creation of two community murals in Jordan Downs. Artists are invited to submit their portfolio highlighting relevant mural work. See flyer for more details. All are encouraged to apply!

COFFEE WITH A COP

On Wednesday morning we joined the Port Police and the Wilmington community for Coffee With a Cop at Hojas. It was great to meet with and chat with our local public safety officers and an opportunity for our residents to share their thoughts and concerns.

PONY LEAGUE

Saturday was opening day for the 2024 Spring season for the Wilmington Pony League at the John Mendez Baseball Field and I was honored to be asked to speak to our kids and families - then throw the first pitch! (It was a little high, but over the plate!) There was food, games, vendors, raffles, music, and of course - great baseball games!

BANNING HIGH CULINARY AND COFFEE

On Wednesday our team attended "Coffee with the Principal" at Banning High School which fosters a positive relationship between the school and parents but also provides a platform for open communication and feedback. Culinary students had the opportunity to showcase their talent and delicious brewing skills!

¡Ayer celebramos temprano el Día de San Patricio trayendo a la Cámara del Consejo a bailarines de paso irlandeses de la Academia de Danza Lyons de San Pedro! Nos ayudaron a iniciar perfectamente una de mis festividades favoritas. Quizás conozcas este día como un momento en el que nos vestimos de verde, amenazamos con pellizcar a quienes no lo hacen y rendimos homenaje a los duendes. Pero esta festividad es mucho más; Tiene un gran significado para los irlandeses de todo el mundo. San Patricio es el santo patrón de Irlanda y se le atribuye haber llevado el cristianismo al pueblo irlandés.

Más allá del folclore y la historia de San Patricio, este día simboliza la importancia de la cultura irlandesa y su gente en todo el mundo. Los inmigrantes irlandeses que entraron a los Estados Unidos entre los siglos XVI y XX fueron cambiados por Estados Unidos y también cambiaron este país. Ayer, el Concejo aprobó mi moción que instruye al Departamento de Planificación Urbana, en consulta con el Fiscal Municipal, a preparar y presentar una ordenanza para enmendar el lenguaje en torno a una de nuestras políticas de uso de terreno. Contamos con una serie de excelentes jardines comunitarios en One-Five, ubicados prácticamente en todas las designaciones de zonificación. Sin embargo, las actuales normas de uso de la tierra, probablemente sin querer, prohíben la venta de estos productos frescos en el lugar donde se cultivan. Quiero cambiar esa regla: debemos permitir ventas y distribución limitadas de productos en el sitio donde se cultivan. Estas ventas limitadas serían buenas para los agricultores y para la comunidad que rodea la granja local. Me sentí agradecido de ver a los agricultores de todo el Distrito, desde Watts hasta el Área del Puerto, en Chambers para apoyar la enmienda de esta ordenanza. Continuaremos manteniéndolo informado sobre el progreso.

JUSTICIA AMBIENTAL DEL PUERTO

El jueves me uní a la alcaldesa Karen Bass, la congresista Nanette Barragán, el administrador de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental Michael Regan y el puerto de Los Ángeles en un recorrido por la costa y el puerto de Wilmington, discutiendo las subvenciones e inversiones federales disponibles en equipos e infraestructura portuaria de cero emisiones, aire proyectos de planificación de calidad y mayores esfuerzos para proteger la salud de las comunidades cercanas a nuestro Puerto. Buscaremos estos fondos de subvención para que el Puerto pueda trabajar para cumplir total y oportunamente con nuestros objetivos de sostenibilidad. Al mismo tiempo, debemos asegurarnos de trabajar para conservar los buenos empleos que tenemos y volver a capacitar y mejorar las habilidades de nuestros trabajadores en el nuevo equipo. Podemos tener un medio ambiente limpio y una economía fuerte.

ZONAS DE REPARACIÓN

Desde ahora hasta el 7 de abril, los miembros de la comunidad de Harbor City-Harbor Gateway-Wilmington podrán votar sobre qué propuestas de programas debería financiar la Ciudad para su comunidad. Las propuestas fueron presentadas por organizaciones locales sin fines de lucro en respuesta a las ideas generadas dentro de la comunidad el otoño pasado. El Departamento de Derechos Civiles de Los Ángeles organizará una feria el domingo 17 de marzo de 11 AM a 2 PM en el Centro Recreativo de Wilmington, donde los votantes podrán conocer las propuestas antes de realizar selecciones en la boleta. Una guía para votantes e información sobre dónde votar están disponibles en repair.lacity.gov. BIXBY AVE Y PCH REPAIR

La Oficina de Servicios Callejeros de la Ciudad realizó una gran reparación en las calles de Bixby Ave. y PCH. Esta carretera ha sido un problema constante debido al intenso tráfico y las rutas de autobuses, por lo que nuestra oficina está trabajando con Street Services y Metro en una solución más permanente a este deterioro de la carretera.

ELIMINACIÓN DE GRAFFITI

Ayúdenos a reportar el grafiti informándolo al 311. Cuanto más rápido podamos eliminar el grafiti, especialmente en los árboles, más rápido podremos reducir el daño causado por los químicos en la pintura.

RENOVACIÓN DE CALLES

Hace unos meses, se repavimentó una parte de la calle 117, justo al oeste de Main, y como resultado, los badenes que había en la calle fueron eliminados durante la repavimentación. Este fin de semana, Street Services está reinstalando los badenes. La construcción debería estar terminada la próxima semana.

LIMPIEZA DE BASURA ILEGAL

DETENCIÓN MACHISTA

Gracias al gran trabajo de los Detectives de Homicidios de la Oficina Sur y los miembros de la comunidad que se acercaron para reportar pistas, LAPD arrestó al presunto tirador en el Machista Bar en San Pedro el jueves pasado, y la oficina del Fiscal de Distrito arresto a la sospechosa. Este arresto es importante tanto para la familia y los amigos de Tyrone Tyars como para toda nuestra comunidad, que ha quedado profundamente perturbada por este acto de violencia sin sentido. La joven vida de Tyrone fue demasiado corta y el dolor que han pasado su pareja, sus hijos, sus seres queridos y sus amigos es inimaginable. Tengo la esperanza de que este arresto traiga justicia a su memoria.

LAMPARAS DE LA CALLE REENCENDIDAS

Estamos emocionados de compartir que las luces han sido reconectadas y están de regreso en el Puente Elberon, el histórico puente de Gaffey St. y a lo largo de Gaffey St. Esta es una hermosa entrada que llega a San Pedro y ahora está iluminada para que todos la vean.

DOLPHINS FOOTBALL

El sábado el salón estaba lleno en el Children's Institute - CII para el banquete anual de los Watts Dolphins. CONSEJO VECINDARIO DE WATTS

CAFÉ CON UN POLICÍA

El miércoles por la mañana nos unimos a la Policía Portuaria y a la comunidad de Wilmington para tomar un Café con un Policía en Hojas. Fue fantástico reunirnos y conversar con nuestros oficiales de seguridad pública locales y una oportunidad para que nuestros residentes compartieran sus pensamientos e inquietudes.

PONY LEAGUE

El sábado fue el día inaugural de la temporada de primavera de 2024 para el Wilmington Pony League en el campo de béisbol John Mendez y tuve el honor de que me pidieran hablar con nuestros niños y familias, ¡y luego hacer el primer lanzamiento! (¡Era un poco alto, pero por encima del plato!) Había comida, juegos, vendedores, rifas, música y, por supuesto, ¡excelentes juegos de béisbol!

CULINARIA Y EL CAFÉ

El miércoles, nuestro equipo asistió al "Café con el director" en Banning High School, lo que fomenta una relación positiva entre la escuela y los padres, pero también proporciona una plataforma para la comunicación abierta y la retroalimentación. ¡Los estudiantes de cocina tuvieron la oportunidad de mostrar su talento y sus deliciosas habilidades cerveceras!
