Dear friends, fam, and allies,
5,500 pails distributed so far!!
The fellows have partnered with Athens Services to distribute pails to multi-family properties in Pico-Union & Westlake! Residents received a free Athens Organics pail to start putting their food waste into the green bin.
They also received educational materials about how to properly sort waste into the appropriate blue and green recycle bins. It’s important to sort properly in order to maximize our recycling and reduce our waste. If the wrong things are found in the blue and green bins , then all the recyclables in those bins are considered “contaminated” and taken to the landfill. Check out these helpful “cheat sheets” from Athens to learn more about what goes in each bin.

¡¡5.500 cubetas distribuidos hasta el momento!!
¡Nuestros Climate Fellows de CD1 tienen el placer de asociarse con Los Servicios de Athens para distribuir cubetas de abono orgánico a propiedades multifamiliares en Pico-Union y Westlake! Los residentes recibieron una cubeta de Athens gratis para comenzar a tirar sus desperdicios de comida al contenedor verde.
También recibieron materiales educativos sobre cómo clasificar adecuadamente la basura en los contenedores de reciclaje azules y verdes correspondientes. Es muy importante clasificar adecuadamente para maximizar nuestro reciclaje y reducir nuestra basura. Si en los contenedores azules y verdes se encuentran cosas equivocadas que no deberían estar allí, entonces todos los materiales reciclables en esos contenedores se consideran "contaminados" y se llevan al vertedero. CD1 is currently serviced by three waste service companies: Athens Services, United Waste Systems, and Republic Services. If you live in an apartment building and do not have a green bin, feel free to use this helpful TOOLKIT and reach out to your landlord or property manager to ask they obtain a green bin for your building!

Tree People in Partnership with The Metropolitan Water District of SoCal Launch
Turf Replacement Program
Create beautiful, sustainable, water-saving landscapes with the help of Metropolitan’s Turf Replacement Program. The rebate starts at $3 per square foot for residential customers and $2 per square foot for commercial customers who remove their grass and replace it with water-efficient California Friendly® and native plants. Plus, get an extra $100 per tree added to your project for a maximum of five trees.
Rebate Requirements:
- Plant three California Friendly® plants per 100 square feet.
- Include a stormwater retention feature to help keep water in your yard when it rains. Rock gardens and rain barrels are among several sustainable landscaping approaches you can take.
- Add permeable hardscapes that allow water to flow through the surface and slowly filter into the ground.
- Replace or modify overhead spray sprinklers with a more water-efficient irrigation system.
