Next week many in the One-Five and throughout Los Angeles will be sitting around their tables with family, friends, and loved ones for Seder to celebrate Passover. Families will read from the Haggadah, telling the story of Passover, the youngest may ask the Four Questions, and it will end with a singing of "Dayenu" a song that celebrates the many blessings bestowed upon the Jewish people during their exodus from Egypt.
Passover is a story of redemption, survival, and freedom. It is a lesson that inspires us to face obstacles which come in our life. To me, Passover is a beautiful tradition to sit around the table with loved ones and not just tell the story of the past but to put yourself in the mindset of being there, and applying those lessons to the present and future.

The Port of LA is the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere. The Vincent Thomas Bridge, which opened in 1963, currently handles a daily traffic load of 53,000 vehicles, with 8.8% of that — or about 4,664 — being heavy trucks. This week I introduced a motion calling for an analysis of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in an effort to prevent a tragedy similar to the one that brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. I’m also calling for a report on the existing coordinated emergency planning response plans, should such an event similar to the collapse of the Baltimore bridge occur in the San Pedro Bay Complex. |

INSIDE SAFE |

On Thursday we completed another Inside Safe in East Wilmington on PCH that addressed an encampment of more than 10 RVs and brought more than 35 people inside. The encampment was located near industrial refineries, raising serious safety concerns over the potential for fire and explosions. This operation has been in the works for some time and I’m glad that these Angelenos will be able to sleep with a roof over their heads and I will continue to advocate that they receive services that can change their lives. |

GAP YOUTH PROGRAM |

GAP’s Seasonal Youth Employment Program provides these teens with fun career development workshops as well as the opportunity to help beautify their community. Thank you to the young people at GAP for lending our Clean 15 Team a hand cleaning up those bulky items off the street! |

HARBOR CITY EGG HUNT & OPENING DAY |

Saturday was a double header at Harbor City Recreation Center with an egg hunt and Easter celebration and then the opening day ceremony for baseball season. I have to say the Easter Bunny made for a great catcher but the kids will be better than both of us! Thanks to Harbor City Park Recreation Center Director Angela Pena for arranging this event and our community partners for a fun-filled day! |

GRAFFITI REMOVAL |

The Office of Community Beautification (OCB) operates a graffiti removal program. Requests for graffiti removal are referred to GAP (Gang Alternatives Program). This Monday they were out on PCH between Normandie and Frampton Ave. cleaning our public spaces. To report graffiti please download the MyLA311 app for Android or iPhone or submit requests using the MyLA311 website. |

ABANDONED VEHICLES |

SOUTH SHORES ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL |

I met with members of the South Shores Elementary School Student Council on Monday. We spoke about the importance of governance and policy creation, and it was great to hear their ideas for legislation that should be introduced. We have a bright future ahead with children like these who are getting involved in student government at such a young age. |

Last Saturday we attended the First National Institute of Health (NIH) Community Leadership Council. This engaged group of residents makes up the Council and will work with the Watts Rising team, HACLA, and other organizations to develop a program that will address pressing health issues in the community. |

Join us on April 27th for an Earth Day Clean Up! Verbum Dei High School and Watts Rising, in collaboration with other partners, will be having clean ups around Watts. Last Saturday we attended the Big Chick Hunt at 109th Park. Weather delayed us from celebrating the week of Easter, but I was so glad to see it was still such a success, filled with community members, festivities, and perfect weather! |

FIRE STATION SUPPORT |

On Saturday, we came together to support, honor, thank, and raise money for the firefighters at LAFD Stations 38 and 49 in Wilmington. These two firehouses were the first on the scene on February 15, racing towards danger to contain the situation and protect our community when a natural-gas-powered trailer caught fire and exploded. Saturday’s Community Barbecue and Firefighter Appreciation Day showed the best of the One-Five - a community full of residents who are caring and supportive. JEDI ZONE BRIDGING THE GAP |

On Thursday I joined a panel discussion for small businesses in the Wilmington area on how to gain access to capital. Bridging the Gap: Access to Capital for Small Businesses helped explain to our local small businesses and future entrepreneurs how to qualify for a SBA loan, including detailed insights into the eligibility criteria, application process, and key considerations for preparation. |

DAMAGED UTILITY POLE |

On Thursday, a damaged utility pole on L St. between Sanford and McFarland Ave. was replaced. My office worked with AT&T to address this issue. Thank you to the community members who called in to report the pole. |

La próxima semana, muchos en el One-Five y en todo Los Ángeles se sentarán alrededor de sus mesas con familiares, amigos y seres queridos para celebrar el Seder de Pésaj. Las familias leerán la Hagadá, contando la historia de Pesaj, los más jóvenes podrán hacer las Cuatro Preguntas y terminará con el canto de "Dayenu", una canción que celebra las muchas bendiciones otorgadas al pueblo judío durante su éxodo de Egipto.
La Pascua es una historia de redención, supervivencia y libertad. Es una lección que nos inspira a enfrentar los obstáculos que se presentan en nuestra vida. Para mí, Pesaj es una hermosa tradición para sentarse alrededor de la mesa con los seres queridos y no sólo contar la historia del pasado, sino adoptar la mentalidad de estar allí y aplicar esas lecciones al presente y al futuro.

INSIDE SAFE |

El jueves completamos otro Inside Safe en East Wilmington en la calle PCH que abordó un campamento de más de 10 vehículos recreativos y atrajo a más de 35 personas al interior. El campamento estaba ubicado cerca de refinerías industriales, lo que planteaba serias preocupaciones de seguridad por la posibilidad de incendios y explosiones. Esta operación ha estado en marcha durante algún tiempo y me alegro de que estos angelinos puedan dormir con un techo sobre sus cabezas y seguiré abogando para que reciban servicios que puedan cambiar sus vidas. |

GAP JUVENIL |

El Programa de empleo juvenil de GAP ofrece a estos adolescentes talleres divertidos de desarrollo profesional, así como la oportunidad de ayudar a embellecer su comunidad. ¡Gracias a los jóvenes de GAP por ayudar a nuestro equipo Clean 15 a limpiar estas pilas de basura en la calle! |

El sábado hubo un doble encuentro en el Harbor City Rec Center con una búsqueda de huevos y una celebración de Pascua y luego la ceremonia inaugural de la temporada de béisbol. Debo decir que el Conejo de Pascua fue un gran receptor, ¡pero los niños serán mejores que nosotros dos! ¡Gracias a la directora del Centro Recreativo de Harbor City Park, Ángela Peña, por organizar este evento y a nuestros miembros comunitarios por un día lleno de diversión! |

Hablamos sobre la importancia de la gobernanza y la creación de políticas, y fue fantástico escuchar sus ideas sobre la legislación que debería introducirse. Tenemos un futuro brillante por delante con niños como estos que se involucran en el gobierno estudiantil a una edad tan temprana. |

RESPALDAMOS A NUESTRA ESTACIÓN DE BOMBEROS |

El sábado, nos reunimos para apoyar, honrar, agradecer y recaudar dinero para los bomberos de las estaciones 38 y 49 de LAFD en Wilmington. Estas dos estaciones de bomberos fueron las primeras en llegar al lugar el 15 de febrero, corriendo hacia el peligro para contener la situación y proteger a nuestra comunidad cuando un remolque propulsado por gas natural se incendió y explotó. Este Bbq comunitario y Día de agradecimiento a los bomberos este sábado mostramos lo mejor del One-Five: una comunidad llena de residentes atentos y solidarios. El jueves me uní a un panel de discusión para negocios en el área de Wilmington sobre cómo obtener acceso al capital. Cerrando la brecha: Acceso al capital para pequeñas empresas ayudó a explicar a nuestras pequeñas empresas locales y futuros empresarios cómo calificar para un préstamo de la SBA, incluyendo información detallada sobre los criterios de elegibilidad, el proceso de solicitud y consideraciones clave para la preparación. |
