Dear Friends,

I was proud to join the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and NBCUniversal this week to celebrate the opening of the new Sheriff’s sub-station in Universal City. This station will benefit our Sheriff’s deputies and the public alike. The space features state-of-the-art facilities, including a large briefing and multi-purpose room, spacious locker area and rest areas for deputies, modern and secure holding cells, and a fitness space. The facility is designed to ensure efficient operations and swift response times. It was evident at the ribbon cutting that it will also serve as a hub for collaboration. Seamlessly sharing information and resources is vital in our efforts to serve our community. I am thankful to our public safety partners, community partners, and business partners for their shared commitment to serving and strengthening our neighborhoods.

Best wishes,

Kathryn Barger
Supervisor, Fifth District

Meet Kitana, a snuggly and affectionate one-year-old chihuahua mix, and Gloria, a gentle and loyal nine-month-old pit bull mix. If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting one of them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I'm proud to support efforts that uplift arts nonprofits and expand creative career pathways in Los Angeles County. I am also committed to ensuring people in our neighborhoods can access arts opportunities in their community. Los Angeles County's Department of Economic Opportunity has partnered with Genesis L.A. to launch a fund that will help nonprofits revitalize commercial spaces. The program will disburse $10 million in grants ranging from $500,000 to $2 million to qualifying nonprofits that are ready to acquire vacant or abandoned land and buildings in communities hardest hit by the pandemic. They are now taking applications from organizations that want to get prequalified. There is a webinar on April 24 at 10 a.m. and an in-person training on May 9 at 10 a.m. for prospective applicants to learn more.
