This was my second year chairing our City's LGBT Heritage & Pride Month festivities at City Hall. We were thrilled to partner with the Department of Cultural Affairs to host Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, and actor and activist Jazzmun Crayton, alongside honorees from each Council District. We kicked off the morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony for our "Reach for your Dreams" exhibit at the City Hall Bridge Gallery, which is open to the public during the month of June, followed by a special performance and presentation during Council and a celebration lunch for all of this Year's honorees. Happy Pride, LA!
Our second annual Fleet Week Venice Beach takeover was a resounding success. We spent the morning placing flags at the graves of fallen soldiers at the West Los Angeles National Cemetery, then headed over to Venice Beach to meet up with Heal the Bay for a beach cleanup. We then joined our active duty military members and the US Marine Band for a beautiful flag raising ceremony at Windward Circle, and then treated the crowds to a live performance at the Venice Skate Park. Head to our Flickr page to see more photos from the event. Check out more images from the day on our Flickr page.
Stopping By The LAPD Mounted Platoon Equine Center
This week, we dropped by the LAPD Mounted Platoon Equine Center to visit our friends - humans and horses - who work hard every day to keep our City safe. These highly trained animals are able to withstand stressful circumstances and respond to emergencies, demonstrations and large events, and they work closely with their human partners to fight crime in LA. If you see them in your local park or neighborhood, be sure to say hello! For more photos from the visit, check out our Flickr page.
Honoring Our Fallen Police Officers
On Tuesday, we gathered at LAPD Headquarters to honor the legacy of the 239 police officers whomade the ultimate sacrifice for Los Angeles. We are incredibly grateful to all of our public safety partners who risk their lives every day to keep our City safe, and we are forever indebted to the families and loved ones of our fallen officers.
It was an honor to visit the Giant Robot Biennale 5 Exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum. Since 2007, Sawtelle resident, Erik Nakamura, founder of Giant Robot, and the JANM have partnered to produce the Giant Robot Biennale, a recurring exhibition that highlights diverse creative works and pop culture art and vinyl toy culture. Many of the featured artists are local CD11 residents, so it was a special treat to spend time appreciating their work! The Giant Robot Biennale 5 Exhibition runs through September 1, so don't miss it.
This Saturday, June 1 is California Adopt-A-Pet Day! We are proud to partner with LA Animal Services and the West LA Animal Shelter for a free pet adoption event on Saturday. Pets adopted from the shelter come spayed, vaccinated, licensed, and microchipped. With so many wonderful animals in need of a home, now is the perfect time to bring home your new fur-ever companion!
