For decades, Father Greg Boyle has committed his life and dedicated himself to serving the marginalized communities of Los Angeles. His commitment to uplifting those left behind in our society has been resolute. Through his leadership, formerly incarcerated individuals are able to find the support to reintegrate into society, defying stereotypes and giving them the second chance they deserve. No one should be judged solely based on their worst moments, and Father Greg Boyle embodies this belief through his life’s work. |

Yesterday, alongside Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, we honored Fr. G for his incredible impact. One of Father Greg’s stories that resonates with me illustrates how human connections form circles, from family circles, friendship circles to professional circles. He teaches us that these circles can inadvertently exclude individuals, pushing them to the margins. His message is: we must actively extend our circles to include those on the outskirts, ensuring no one is left behind. We must remind ourselves continually to expand our circles, challenging the arbitrary definitions of who belongs. This lesson and so many more that he has taught me have deeply influenced my life and thousands of other lives.
Let’s commit to seeking to dismantle the exclusionary barriers within our lives, our community, and the entire One-Five. |

On Thursday the Budget, Finance, and Innovation Committee concluded the series of hearings on the 2024-25 Fiscal Year Budget. It will be a difficult year financially for the City of Los Angeles but I’m proud that this budget is a “no layoff budget” meaning that we are not removing any filled positions. However, the work is not done yet, on Wednesday the full City Council will be hearing public comment on this budget at 10 AM and we will be voting on the finalized budget on Thursday. You can give public comment on Wednesday at City Hall in Council Chambers. |

On the 90th Anniversary of the "First Blood", we paid tribute to the two dockworkers, Dickie Parker and John Knudsen, who lost their lives on the LA Waterfront during the 1934 West Coast strikes, which eventually led to the establishment of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). In May 1934, the International Longshoremen’s Association initiated a strike to protest unfair hiring practices and to advocate for union recognition and better wages. On Wednesday, alongside the Southern California Pensioners of ILWU, we commemorated "First Blood" to honor those first martyrs and all the union members who have since tragically lost their lives while performing this dangerous work on the San Pedro Bay Waterfront. |

NEW TRASH RECEPTACLES IN THE ONE-FIVE |

On Tuesday, I joined LA Sanitation to begin the installation of 49 new, attractive metal trash cans in the One-Five. From the Harbor to Watts, as part of our Clean 15 initiative, LA Sanitation performed field-verification tests to determine the best locations for these new bins. This marks just another step towards maintaining cleanliness within our community. With more trash receptacles throughout our busy corridors, residents can dispose of waste properly, reducing litter and enhancing the beauty of our neighborhoods. |

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UPDATE |

The Vincent Thomas Bridge (VTB) Deck Replacement Project studied the effects that the project may have on the environment and the community. The results of these studies are in the Draft Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Assessment (Draft EIR/EA), which is available for review and comment from now through Monday, July 15. There will be two in-person hearings where attendees will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation regarding the Draft EIR/EA results and provide comments with a court reporter. These will take place on May 30th from 6 to 8 PM at the Wilmington Recreation Center, and June 13th from 6 - 8 PM at the Peck Park Community Center. |

Today at the Harbor City Recreation Center will be the 2nd Annual ‘Healing Through Community’ Wellness Resource Fair. This event by the Harbor City Neighborhood Council with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health will bring neighbors together for resources and a reminder that you are not alone. |

CALTRANS WATER PIPE FIXED |

This week, a water pipe off the 110 Freeway near Laconia Blvd. burst and poured water onto the freeway. I am glad to report our first responders acted quickly, and Caltrans was able to shut off the water. Further repairs will be made in the coming weeks. |

Tomorrow May 19th at 4 PM we will be hosting a CommUNITY Celebration/Town Hall in the Peck Park Community Center. This Town Hall was planned in response to a hate crime that occurred in San Pedro over the 2023 holiday season. Just as our community always does, our leaders have stepped up to come together and plan an event where we, as a community, will learn about hate crimes and the prosecution of those crimes. Let’s come together to send a strong message that we reject hatred in San Pedro and the One-Five. |

On Saturday at Fire Station 112 in the Harbor we celebrated community resilience on Fire Service Day. The day included station tours, BBQ, boat tours, a vehicle extraction exercise, and Hazmat squad demonstrations. I stopped by CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles for the grand opening of La Befana Bakery - and to celebrate the one year anniversary of Homemade by the Hays at CRAFTED. CRAFTED showcases the unique, homemade, talent of our One-Five entrepreneurs and businesses and it’s an incredible asset to our Harbor community. |

This week we called the Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) to cover up some new graffiti. We noticed new graffiti on Thursday, May 16, around Century and Success Aves. and the next day GAP was on the scene painting over it. Yesterday I attended the Jordan Downs Freedom Tree Groundbreaking. The original Freedom Tree was a focal point of the Jordan Downs Developments and I am grateful to Urbano Strategies and the Michaels organization for planting a new Freedom Tree that will grow with the community. |

Last Friday we attended a very special Mother’s Day event at Jordan High School. The Parent Center and high school collaborated to celebrate mothers of Jordan Downs and the surrounding area. It was a great celebration to be able to share a meal and appreciate the mothers here in Watts. |

Calling all young readers! Our office is donating books every month to A Little Free Library - a free book exchange - take a book or share a book. This library is located outside of the SBCC facility on Marine Ave. and F St. Pick up a book, learn about the world and escape into the wonderful world of literature. |

This week Providence hosted a Mother’s Day brunch to honor all the wonderful mothers in our community and celebrate the arrival of spring. There were a variety of activities including food, raffles, and music! Thank you Providence for creating the space to uplift the moms who add so much to our community. |

This week we joined LA Walks and the parents from Wilmington Park for a workshop on the importance of plants in our homes. Studies have shown that plants boost moods, increase creativity, reduce stress, and eliminate air pollutants—making for a healthier, happier you. |

El jueves, el Comité de Presupuesto, Finanzas e Innovación concluyó la serie de audiencias sobre el Presupuesto del Año Fiscal 2024-25. Mañana, 19 de mayo a las 4 p. m., organizaremos una celebración comunitaria/ayuntamiento en el centro comunitario de Peck Park. Este Ayuntamiento se planeó en respuesta a un crimen de odio ocurrido en San Pedro durante la temporada navideña de 2023. Tal como siempre lo hace nuestra comunidad, nuestros líderes han dado un paso al frente para reunirse y planificar un evento en el que nosotros, como comunidad, aprenderemos sobre los crímenes de odio y el procesamiento de esos crímenes. Unámonos para enviar un mensaje contundente de que rechazamos el odio en San Pedro y el One-Five. |

El sábado en la Estación de Bomberos 112 en el Puerto celebramos la resiliencia de la comunidad en el Día del Servicio de Bomberos.
