We’re only a month out from Summer, and with three months left in our term to reach our goal of distributing 10,000 pails, we’re starting to feel the heat! ☀️ We hope everyone can find some time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine these next couple of weeks. Consider checking out a new park, or a beach you’ve never been to!

Join us for OrganicsLA Pail Canvassing weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout CD1. We also distribute at local community events – check out our Sign-Up Genius for upcoming dates! Have fun in the sun, get to know your neighbors, and make new friends while helping us reach our 10K pail goal!

Volunteer & Event Highlights
We had the pleasure of attending Healing Urban Barrios’ Spring Block Party & Community Resource Fair last month on April 6. We distributed a total of 213 OrganicsLA kitchen pails with the help of one of our volunteers Esther M. A huge thank you, Esther M. for helping us distribute pails, educate community members and increase climate action at one of our recent events.

Tuvimos el placer de ir a la Fiesta de barrio y feria de recursos cumunitarios de Healing Urban Barrios el mes pasado el 6 de abril. Distribuímos un total del 213 cubetas de OrganicsLA con la ayuda de nuestra voluntaria Esther M. Muchas gracias a Esther M. por ayudarnos a distribuir cubetas, educar a los miembros de la comunidad y aumentar la acción climática en este evento.

Bike Safety Camp and Earth Day Resource Fair
One of the most fun events the Fellows have tabled at thus far was the Pico Union Neighborhood Council and Loyola High School’s Earth Day event last month, on April 27 at Magnolia Elementary School. Together, with other local organizations and community members, the event featured a resource fair and bike safety camp, where kids learned how to stay safe on the road, as well as a bike giveaway! We distributed roughly 60 pails, and met loads of families and children who are committed to going green by riding their new bikes, and composting in their new kitchen pails!

Campamento de seguridad para ciclistas y Feria de recursos para el Día de la Tierra
Uno de los eventos más divertidos en los que hemos trabajado fue el mes pasado durante la celebración del Día de la Tierra presentada por el Concilio vecinal de Pico Union y Loyola High School el 27 de abril en Magnolia ES. Junto con otras organizaciones locales y miembres de la comunidad, el evento incluyó una feria de recursos y un campamento para ciclistas donde los jóvenes aprendieron como mantenerse seguros en las calles ¡y también se distribuyeron bicicletas! Regalamos unas 60 cubetas y conocimos a muchas familias y niñes que se han comprometido a montar sus bicicletas nuevas y usar sus cubetas nuevas para compostear para luchar por el medio ambiente.

- New & Noteworthy:
You can now take all of your wine, liquor, and juice beverage containers along with wine pouches, boxes, and cartons to redeem for cash at a recycling center! Starting in January of this year, recycling centers began accepting these containers in compliance with SB1013 to reduce more glass and plastic from going into our landfills. - Nuevo y Notable:
¡Ahora puede llevar todos sus envases de vino, licores y jugos junto con bolsas, cajas y cartones de vino para un reembolso en un centro de reciclaje! A partir de enero de este año, los centros de reciclaje comenzaron a aceptar estos contenedores de conformidad con la ley SB1013 para reducir el vidrio y plástico de nuestros vertederos. TerraCycle is an innovative company whose mission is “Eliminating the Idea of Waste®” by helping hundreds of brands and manufacturers reduce, reuse, and recycle products and packaging. They do this in a few key ways:
- Helping manufacturer’s design their products to be locally recyclable, reducing the need for outside recycling companies.
- Partnering with brands to create free recycling programs, making their products or packages from their own-brand waste, fostering a recycling-based circular economy.
- Working with hundreds of brands and manufacturers to create refillable versions of their previously-single-use products, reducing future waste.
TerraCycle accepts items that are typically not recyclable, such as toothpaste tubes, shampoo bottles, bread bags, old vacuums, and shoes! Check out their website for a full list of items accepted in their FREE recycling programs, here.
