June 19th, or Juneteenth, marks a significant day in our country’s history. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the day that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, which declared that all enslaved people were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it took over two years for this news to reach some of the most remote parts of the Confederate South.
Juneteenth not only marks the end to the greatest stain on our country’s history, slavery, but also a victory of freedom over oppression. Beyond the celebration, Juneteenth continues to serve as a reminder of the enduring struggle for civil rights and social justice. |

Over the past week we celebrated Juneteenth across the District, from Watts to the Waterfront. We participated in multiple events with Think Watts, BuildPlus, the San Pedro Community Network, and at the Korean Friendship Bell. At each celebration, we came together to embrace our shared American history and the ongoing journey towards a more just and inclusive society. |

Yesterday I introduced a Motion to move existing funding, approximately 1.2 million dollars, from a reserve account into the Fire Department budget to allow us to recruit and pay “hand crews” which are brushland firefighters. These positions provide important public safety citywide, especially as temperatures rise, while also offering hands-on training opportunities and certifications to qualified individuals who might also choose to apply to become dual function firefighters for the City. |

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UPDATE |

The Vincent Thomas Bridge (VTB) Deck Replacement Project studied the effects that the project may have on the environment and the community. This week the City Council set a Public Hearing date of August 27, 2024 for the public to submit comments regarding the Bureau of Sanitation’s proposed plan to increase the Sewer Service Charge rate over the next five (5) years through 2028. Due to much needed improvements and escalating costs to maintain our sewer infrastructure, the plan proposes to increase our bi-monthly bills incrementally. This action requires that the City provide notification to all customers of the impending increase. |

We take pride in maintaining a welcoming environment in our communities, and upon discovering graffiti on our newly installed Harbor City welcome sign, we took immediate action to clean it up. We are committed to keeping our community beautiful and ensuring that all residents feel proud to call it home. |

Our team reported old, broken newspaper stands that were out of compliance and had unfortunately become makeshift trash receptacles. These stands were not being maintained and were contributing to blight in our community. By ensuring their removal, we aim to maintain a clean and accessible environment for all residents to enjoy. |

On Thursday our Clean 15 team and LACC cleaned an alley notorious for illegal dumping between Lomita Blvd to 253rd St off of Normandie Ave and Frampton Ave.. They successfully cleared away weeds, large items, trash and debris, restoring the alley for area residents to use. Over the past few weeks, the vegetation on this private lot in the Merit Tract community had grown excessively and became a blight to the neighborhood. Notices were sent to the owner for a lot clearance. We are glad to report that the owner has cleared it this week! |

VISIT TO FIRE STATION 101 |

On Monday, I visited Fire Station 101 on 25th Street and Western Ave, where I had a tour of the station and enjoyed a meal with our brave firefighters. They showed me the areas of the station that needed improvement. In order to make these updates, they have been fundraising since last October. When you see them outside selling merchandise, make sure to stop by! Otherwise, you can ring the doorbell and they will have shirts available for sale. |

We enjoyed a unique celebration for Juneteenth by ringing the Korean Friendship Bell! In commemoration of the holiday, we’ve added June 19th as one of six official bell-ringing ceremonies each year. Thank you to the LA County African American Employees Association, the LA County Asian American Employees Association, and the LA City Rec and Parks Department for hosting the event. |

PASEO DEL MAR OVERGROWTH CLEARED |

In preparation for summer, we cleared out all of the weeds at Paseo Del Mar and Western Avenue. Altogether, the crews removed over 10 tons of brush! A big thank you goes to LA Sanitation for working together with our Clean team to get it done. |

Connie and I enjoyed multiple celebrations for Juneteenth through all of Watts. We attended the celebration led by ThinkWatts where we enjoyed a concert with live performances, vendors, and community resources. We also joined the celebration at the Train Station with BuildPlus who hosted its 4th annual celebration where they had Tribal live music and grilled for attendees. Thank you to these organizations for putting on such wonderful events to spend the day together. |

SPANISH CPAB - CPR INFANT/ADULT & NARCAN CLASS |

This Tuesday we had the pleasure of having the Emergency Preparedness Public Health Nurse Area Health Office of West & South Los Angeles & CPR Instruct Unlimited LLC do a joint Family CPR class at the Spanish CPAB held at St. Lawrence of Brindisi. We appreciate their collaboration to make this class available to our community and give hands-on experience in the need of an emergency. They also gave information on Narcan use in case of emergency and were able to distribute to attendees in addition to CPR booklets. |

This Thursday we requested Street Services to provide routine Bike Lane Street Sweeping along Central Ave. As summer comes around we know more people will be utilizing the lanes so we want to make sure to keep them maintained so that we can all enjoy safe and clean travels in our community. |

This week, StreetsLA was out on Opp Street between Fries Avenue and Island Avenue to slurry seal and repaint the street. Maintaining our public infrastructure and improving road quality is important to protect and preserve our city streets. |

El 19 de Junio, o Juneteenth , marca un día importante en la historia de nuestro país. Juneteenth conmemora la emancipación de los afroamericanos esclavizados en los Estados Unidos. Ayer presenté una moción para trasladar los fondos existentes, aproximadamente 1.2 millones de dólares, de una cuenta de reserva al presupuesto del Departamento de Bomberos para permitirnos reclutar y pagar "equipos de mano", que son bomberos de terrenos con maleza. Estos puestos brindan seguridad pública importante en toda la ciudad, especialmente a medida que aumentan las temperaturas, al mismo tiempo que ofrecen oportunidades de capacitación práctica y certificaciones a personas calificadas que también podrían optar por postularse para convertirse en bomberos de doble función para la ciudad. |

Esta semana, el Concejo Municipal fijó una fecha de audiencia pública para el 27 de agosto de 2024 para que el público presente comentarios sobre el plan propuesto por la Oficina de Saneamiento para aumentar la tarifa del cargo por servicio de alcantarillado durante los próximos cinco (5) años hasta 2028. Debido a una gran necesidad mejoras y costos crecientes para mantener nuestra infraestructura de alcantarillado, el plan propone aumentar nuestras facturas bimestrales de manera incremental. El lunes visité la Estación de Bomberos 101 en 25th Street y Western Ave, donde hice un recorrido por la estación y disfruté de una comida con nuestros valientes bomberos. Me mostraron las áreas de la estación que necesitaban mejoras. Para poder realizar estas actualizaciones, han estado recaudando fondos desde el pasado mes de octubre. Cuando los veas afuera vendiendo mercadería, ¡asegúrate de pasar! De lo contrario, puedes tocar el timbre y tendrán camisetas disponibles para la venta. |

16 DE JUNIO EN LA CAMPANA DE COREA |

¡Disfrutamos de una celebración única del 19 de junio al tocar la Campana de la Amistad Coreana! En conmemoración de la festividad, hemos agregado el 19 de junio como una de las seis ceremonias oficiales de toque de campana de cada año. Gracias a la Asociación de Empleados Afroamericanos del Condado de Los Ángeles, a la Asociación de Empleados Asiáticos Americanos del Condado de Los Ángeles y al Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles por organizar el evento. |

Connie y yo disfrutamos de múltiples celebraciones del 19 de junio en todo Watts. Asistimos a la celebración dirigida por ThinkWatts donde disfrutamos de un concierto con presentaciones en vivo, proveedores y recursos comunitarios. También nos unimos a la celebración en la estación de tren con BuildPlus, quien organizó su cuarta celebración anual donde tuvieron música tribal en vivo y parrilladas para los asistentes. Gracias a estas organizaciones por organizar eventos tan maravillosos para pasar el día juntos. |

Este martes tuvimos el placer de que la Oficina de Salud del Área de Enfermería de Salud Pública de Preparación para Emergencias del Oeste y Sur de Los Ángeles y CPR Instruct Unlimited LLC realizaran una clase conjunta de RCP familiar en el CPAB en español que se llevó a cabo en St. Lawrence de Brindisi. Agradecemos su colaboración para que esta clase esté disponible para nuestra comunidad y brinde experiencia práctica en caso de necesidad de una emergencia. También brindaron información sobre el uso de Narcan en caso de emergencia y pudieron distribuirla a los asistentes además de folletos de RCP. |
