fireworks

As we gear up to celebrate our nation’s independence, I urge and remind everyone throughout the Council District 12 community to please celebrate this holiday responsibly. While fireworks are undoubtedly a staple of this celebration, personal possession of fireworks is illegal in the city and can pose a significant danger to individuals and communities.

I encourage everyone to instead attend a professional fireworks show and enjoy the excitement from afar. Please click here to visit the Los Angeles Fire Department’s guide to responsibly celebrating the 4th of July and see a list of professional fireworks shows.

Happy 4th of July!

Rapid Response Team Six-Month Check-In

Our district's rapid response team operates in our community five days a week, collecting illegally dumped items and helping maintain CD12 as one of the city's cleanest districts. We're excited to announce that our Rapid Response Team has removed over 3,800 illegally dumped items across the district at the halfway point of the year! These items include large items such as refrigerators, mattresses, TVs, and chairs, as well as smaller items like bags of weeds and trash.

If you come across any illegally dumped items or see large items needing removal, please call 3-1-1 to report and arrange a pick-up.

CD12 COMMUNITY UPDATES

Prepare and Protect Yourself for Heat Season

Summer is here, and as those of us in the San Fernando Valley know, temperatures can be sweltering during the summer season. Many areas throughout Los Angeles County, including the West San Fernando Valley, are currently under an excessive heat warning through the start of next week. Here are a couple of recommendations for high-temperature days:

· Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated throughout the day.

· If you must go out, plan your day to avoid going out during the hottest hours, and wear sunscreen. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, and wear a hat or use an umbrella.

· Cars get very hot inside, even if the windows are ‘cracked’ or open. Never leave children or pets in cars. Call 911 if you see a child or pet in a car alone.

· Beware of and know what to do for heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Call 911 right away if you see these symptoms: high body temperature (103°F or higher), vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and hot, red, dry, or damp skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Additionally, the City of Los Angeles Climate and Emergency Mobilization has a one-stop shop where you can find cooling centers and learn more about heat resources. Click here to learn more.
