Highlights from World CLT Day 2024

Last month we celebrated World CLT Day 2024—an international event dedicated to bringing the global community together and promote CLTs! In total, there were:

  • 16 events—4 online/12 in-person—ranging from presentations to celebrations;

  • Communications in 7 different languages; and

  • Participation from 105 organizations from 31 countries, highlighted below ⤵️

Also, World CLT Day got some attention in the media:

Global South CLT Initiative “Land Ownership in Latin America and the Caribbean: Collective Approaches and Solutons”: This webinar provided an overview of the experiences with CLTs in the Global South through a dialogue between CLT organizations in Brazil and Puerto Rico, followed by a discussion among the presenters.

A Unique Community Land Trust Making Homeownership More Affordable in Richmond: The first CLT in the US to be combined with a land bank is set to make its 100th home sale less than adecade after its founding. But the MWCLT isn’t just a community land trust. Asa rare CLT that also serves as both a housing developer and a land bank, theMWCLT has developed a powerful approach to make housing affordable to more low-and middle-income Richmonders through private and public sector partnerships.

FiTiCAS Study Reveals Barriers and Solutions for Small Farmers in Puerto Rico (Spanish): Mariolga Reyes Cruz, Cofounder and Executive Director of Fideicomiso de Tierras Comunitarias para la Agricultura Sostenible (FiTiCAS), discusses findings from the study "Access to Agricultural Land: Current Public Policy and Experiences," which highlights structural barriers for small and medium farmers in Puerto Rico. Conducted with University of Puerto Rico Law students and supported by Espacios Abiertos, the research reveals that current legal frameworks can support sustainable farming. FiTiCAS, founded in 2019, aims to protect land for farmers to enhance Puerto Rico's food security.
