June 21, 2024

This week I was honored to adjourn Friday’s City Council Meeting in the memory of Raul Porto Sr., an incredible businessman, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Raul Porto's life journey created what is, without a doubt, one of the most recognized and treasured restaurants in Los Angeles County, Porto’s Bakery.

As home to the only Porto’s Bakery within the City of Los Angeles, the Portos have become a part of the CD12 family, and their loss is a loss for everyone in our community. Raul Sr. passed away peacefully last month surrounded by his loving family at the age of 92. His legacy lives on in his three children, Raul Jr., Betty, Margarita, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. May he rest in peace.

After multiple reports of broken basketball hoops at Dearborn Park, I am happy to share that my office not only had them replaced, but also reinforced to prevent future damage. With the hoops now repaired and reinforced, residents and visitors can look forward to enjoying endless hours of basketball in the beautiful summer weather.

Lastly, this week is National Mosquito Control Awareness Week! This annual observance in the United States aims to raise awareness about the importance of mosquito control and the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases. It typically occurs in mid to late June, coinciding with peak mosquito season in many parts of the country. The week is dedicated to educating the public about the risks associated with mosquitoes and the actions individuals can take to protect themselves and their communities.
