| | As the only Korean American serving on the Los Angeles City Council, I was incredibly honored to represent the city at the AAPISTRONG Small Business Roundtable, hosted by the National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce and Entrepreneurship and the Asian Business Association. This panel brought together small business owners and government leaders to discuss how we can foster economic growth and ensure that government is always working in the interest of small businesses and entrepreneurs.
As the son of a former small business owner, I have firsthand experience of the critical role that mom-and-pop shops play in the local economy and the well-being of people in our region. As your Councilmember, I have always been a strong voice for small businesses and advocated for considering how policies and legislation will affect these small but critical enterprises. It's essential for the business community to have a seat at the table, and it was inspiring to see so many key figures come together to ensure their voices and perspectives were heard. |
| | Earlier this week, Council District 12’s Public Safety Deputy, Ben Pak, was honored to join command staff at the LAPD Valley Traffic Division Community Meeting regarding street racing. This meeting invited community members to hear from officers on how the division is working to mitigate street racing and takeovers. Participants learned more about how education, engineering, and enforcement work in conjunction to reduce this persistent problem. Additionally, attendees were offered the chance to ask questions directly to the officers who do the work on the ground.
My office continues to fund overtime for the Valley Traffic Division’s efforts to crack down on street racing in Valley communities. |
| | While those of us in the Valley need no reminder, the heatwave currently being experienced throughout our region is keeping temperatures extremely high. With the heat comes myriad problems, including the increased possibility of wildfires.
We are continuing to conduct brush clearances at susceptible locations (like near the 118 freeway Reseda off-ramp, pictured above) within the district to hinder the chance of wildfire. Please remember that there are numerous steps you can take to protect yourself and your home in the case of wildfire. The Los Angeles Fire Department has a guide to help you stay prepared which you can find by clicking here. |

| | Heat Wave for the West A new heat wave is expected starting this weekend. Here are a couple of recommendations for high-temperature days: Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated throughout the day. If you must go out, plan your day to avoid going out during the hottest hours, and wear sunscreen. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, and wear a hat or use an umbrella. Cars get very hot inside, even if the windows are ‘cracked’ or open. Never leave children or pets in cars. Call 911 if you see a child or pet in a car alone. Beware of and know what to do for heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Call 911 right away if you see these symptoms: high body temperature (103°F or higher), vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and hot, red, dry, or damp skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Additionally, the City of Los Angeles Climate and Emergency Mobilization has a one-stop shop to find cooling centers and learn more about heat resources. Click here to learn more.

| | Proposed Increases to Sewer Rates By now you probably have heard that the City of Los Angeles is proposing a rate increase for its Sewer Service Charge (SSC). The funds bring needed updates to the city’s aging sewer system and go specifically toward the management, maintenance, and improvement of that system. Steady rate increases were paused in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Property owners will receive a notice in the mail in early July outlining the need for the proposed rate increase and how they can learn more about providing input at two webinars this summer. Wastewater treatment is among the most critical services LASAN provides to protect public health and the environment. We understand that many Angelenos may require financial assistance with their bills, and encourage them to visit http://www.ladwp.com/financialassistance to learn more about LADWP’s financial assistance programs.
To learn more about the proposed rate adjustments, we encourage you to attend one of LASAN’s webinars on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 9:30am, and Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 6pm.
To register in advance, visit the respective link on each date. Visit www.lacitysan.org/rates for more information. |
