| Parks are a key part of summer fun, and ensuring that the parks in Council District 12 are up to the standards of our community is something my team and I work on daily.
A few weeks ago, we shared a small, but meaningful accomplishment regarding the replacement basketball hoops at Dearborn Park. Repairs to amenities at parks, like basketball hoops, are representative of the dedication and work of city employees in various departments, including the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP). To that end, I would like to share a few more examples of small improvements we’ve made at local parks that come with huge benefits to parkgoers. |
| | Pickleball’s meteoric rise in popularity as a recreational activity has also brought the meteoric rise in requests for courts to accommodate the demand for the sport. As my team, alongside RAP, work to find solutions to accommodate the demand, we have also heeded calls to keep courts that are currently available, well-maintained. Pictured above are courts at Chatsworth Park South, which were recently equipped with new nets, a bulletin board, and wind guards. Soon, benches will be added as well. |
| | At the Mary Ellen Crosby Playground in Bee Canyon Park, community leaders were vocal about safety concerns at the park including a broken swing. My office worked to expedite the repair of the swing and are working on addressing the remaining issues. |
| | On the subject of parks, I joined numerous community leaders in encouraging the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council to support naming Porter Ranch’s new 50-acre park after Jane and Bert Boeckmann. The Boeckmanns lived just south of this new park for decades and gave so much back to our local community and the entire San Fernando Valley.
I was delighted that the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council listened to the community and unanimously supported naming this new park after Jane and Bert Boeckmann. This exciting new park, which includes the “Sesevenga Pavillion,” an amphitheater with a stage for arts and performances for the community, will be open to the public soon—more details to come. |

| | Prepare and Protect Yourself for Heat Season Summer is here, and as those of us in the San Fernando Valley know, temperatures can be sweltering during the summer season. Many areas throughout Los Angeles County, including the West San Fernando Valley, are currently under an excessive heat warning through the start of next week. Here are a couple of recommendations for high-temperature days: Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated throughout the day. If you must go out, plan your day to avoid going out during the hottest hours, and wear sunscreen. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, and wear a hat or use an umbrella. Cars get very hot inside, even if the windows are ‘cracked’ or open. Never leave children or pets in cars. Call 911 if you see a child or pet in a car alone. Beware of and know what to do for heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Call 911 right away if you see these symptoms: high body temperature (103°F or higher), vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and hot, red, dry, or damp skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Additionally, the City of Los Angeles Climate and Emergency Mobilization has a one-stop shop where you can find cooling centers and learn more about heat resources. Click here to learn more. |

| | Proposed Increases to Sewer Rates By now you probably have heard that the City of Los Angeles is proposing a rate increase for its Sewer Service Charge (SSC). The funds bring needed updates to the City’s aging sewer system and go specifically toward the management, maintenance, and improvement of that system. Steady rate increases were paused in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Property owners will receive a notice in the mail in early July outlining the need for the proposed rate increase and how they can learn more about providing input at two webinars this summer. Wastewater treatment is among the most critical services LASAN provides to protect public health and the environment. We understand that many Angelenos may require financial assistance with their bills, and encourage them to visit http://www.ladwp.com/financialassistance to learn more about LADWP’s financial assistance programs.
To learn more about the proposed rate adjustments, we encourage you to attend one of LASAN’s webinars on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 9:30 am, and Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 6 pm.
To register in advance, visit the respective link on each date. Visit www.lacitysan.org/rates for more information. |
