Governor Newsom Issues Executive Order On Homeless Encampments
In the wake of the Grants Pass decision, there was much buzz this week over Governor Newsom's Executive Order about encampment clearance. The order directs the California DOT to begin clearing encampments on State property, using best practices of notice, outreach, and offers of shelter or interim housing. It also "encourages" cities across California to do the same. But importantly, it clarifies that encampments that pose a threat to life, health, safety, or infrastructure can be removed immediately.

Here on the Westside, we're already doing this work, and I've already introduced legislation to address vehicle dwelling and to bar encampments in our very high fire severity zones, around environmentally sensitive areas, and near critical infrastructure. And, I've already introduced a motion asking the City Attorney to report back on the impact of Grants Pass on our current homelessness regulations, litigation, settlements, and what changes other cities in the region are making.

With the future of Los Angeles at stake, your voice will be critical to ensuring the City takes the right steps to solve this crisis, so please stay engaged with me and my team.

Celebrating Paris 2024 And Preparing For LA 2028
As the world watches the kickoff of this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, I could not be more excited for Los Angeles’ opportunity to host in 2028. To celebrate this quadrennial event, I joined the LA84 foundation and City leaders on Friday as well as members of the French Consulate team to watch the opening ceremony festivities. As the Chair of the Committee on the Olympic and Paralympic Games, I am focusing on and learning from Paris’ preparations so that we can be ready in Los Angeles. More to come!

As we work to ensure that these Games are a success, it is so important that part of the metrics of success are the engagement of our communities and the involvement of local businesses so that the Olympic magic can be felt throughout Los Angeles.
