| | | Marie Cirillo, a tireless advocate for empowering rural communities and using community land trusts for rural development, passed away on July 4, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she became a Catholic nun at the age of 19, joining the Glenmary Sisters. She and 43 other Sisters left the order in 1967. Many of them, including Marie, relocated to Appalachia and started a new nonprofit, the Federation of Communities and Service (FOCUS). Marie moved near Clairfield, an unincorporated town in the coalfields of east Tennessee, where she remained for the rest of her life, doing community |

| organizing and helping to establish many community development organizations. These included the Woodland CLT, Model Valley Development Corporation, the Clearfork Water Utility, and the Clearfork Community Institute. Marie's legacy of compassion and community service lives on through the institutions she built and the lives she touched.
