August 30, 2024

In our continuing fight against homelessness, the City successfully acquired a Northridge property in 2023 through the State's Project Homekey 2.0 housing program, and since that time, non-profit Volunteers of America Los Angeles has been preparing the former hotel for permanent occupancy.

Last week, The Londie apartments opened its doors to its first two residents. These apartments represent stability and a glimpse at a better future for residents who are homeless. I am excited to see this permanent housing continue to be filled and play a key role in forever changing the lives of those who will call The Londie their new home.

This week, I had the pleasure of connecting with several important business and advocacy groups in the City. It was fulfilling to discuss my work in Council District 12 and engage in open dialogue about Los Angeles as a whole.

The three organizations - VICA, Central City Association of Los Angeles, and BizFed - are important partners who amplify the needs and priorities of businesses throughout the city. It's always an honor to share my vision and initiatives, and I'm grateful to all three groups for their efforts in making Los Angeles a better place.

Council District 12 also welcomed two new businesses to the community this week. CD12 staff was proud to join the North Valley Regional Chamber to welcome Christy's Foundation to the Northridge Fashion Center! Founded by Christy Dawson, Christy's Foundation is a food relief program that provides nutritious food to individuals and families in need, ensuring that no one goes hungry.

In Granada Hills, I was glad to help cut the ribbon on the eagerly awaited Yoga-Urt which finally opened its doors to the community. Serving organic vegan ice cream, this business represents a non-dairy take on a classic staple, and believe me, you won’t be disappointed. Who knew vegan ice cream could be so delicious? Check them out by clicking here.

Lastly, this Labor Day weekend, let us take a moment to remember the contributions of workers and laborers to the development of our country, and please celebrate safely!

CD12 COMMUNITY UPDATES

BRUSH CLEARANCE ADJACENT TO BROWNS CANYON

Council District 12 is no stranger to the dangers of wildfires and residents know the threat that dry brush and vegetation can pose to their homes all too well. After hearing concerns from local communities near Browns Canyon, my office coordinated with LADWP to conduct a significant brush clearance in the area. Pictured above is how the field looked in May; some of the grass was nearly 3 feet tall!

The field during the brush clearance.

The area after all the dead brush was removed. This improvement will give the fire department a chance to keep the fire small if one develops in the area during the fire season.
