It’s going to be hot this weekend. An Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service is in effect for the entire Los Angeles region and is expected to remain in place through Monday, September 9th, at 8 PM. Temperatures are forecast to soar, with many areas reaching the high 90s and triple digits. Heatwaves like this pose serious risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as seniors, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. It's crucial that we all take extra precautions to protect ourselves and our neighbors.
The Emergency Management Department, Climate Emergency Mobilization Office (CEMO), LAFD, LAPD, Recreation and Parks, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), and other City Departments are prepared and ready to respond to this heatwave.
The city has opened several cooling centers, providing residents with air-conditioned spaces to escape the heat. The City of LA Climate Emergency Mobilization Office has also developed the Cool Spots LA app, which identifies cooling amenities and their locations in L.A., such as public libraries (the City is working to open additional libraries in high-heat areas during off hours), recreation centers, cooling centers, community pools, and splash pads. Angelenos are encouraged to sign up at NotifyLA.org to receive heat and adverse weather alerts on their phones.
Remember to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day; avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours (10 AM - 4 PM), and if you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade. Keep your home cool by using fans or air conditioning, closing blinds or curtains to block out sunlight, and consider visiting cooling centers if your home becomes too hot. Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool, and check on elderly relatives or neighbors who may need assistance.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is working to reduce the risk of power outages in Los Angeles. LADWP will work around the clock to meet customer demand during the heatwave. LADWP electric trouble crews are fully staffed and ready to respond to power outages, should they occur, with additional crews on standby to assist as needed.
Lastly, you can report power outages at www.ladwp.com/outages or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397). LADWP customers can also sign up to receive outage alerts via text or email at www.ladwp.com/outagealert. Stay safe and stay cool this weekend.

On Wednesday, the City Council approved my motion instructing the Department of Water and Power and the Housing Authority to investigate and make necessary repairs to address the lead in Watts’ water. My motion also calls on the Housing Authority to develop a strategy to communicate progress with the residents. Watts is a wonderful neighborhood, but it ranks among California’s most polluted, according to CalEnviroScreen data. The Better Watts Initiative found significant lead contamination in the tap water of several homes, especially in public housing. I was grateful to have Tim Watkins of the WLCAC and Megan Wong, a researcher with the Better Watts Initiative, in Council on Wednesday to provide public comment and celebrate its passage. The city, including the DWP and Housing Authority, have already begun mobilizing to address the issue, implementing hydration stations, beginning testing, and holding community meetings to inform residents. |

Thanks to Mel Bobich's efforts, thousands of San Pedro youth and seniors have participated in recreational activities in the area, enriching the community for current and future generations. Los Angeles is a Union Town, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Harbor Area. On Monday we hosted an amazing Labor Day parade and rally in Wilmington, the Heart of the Harbor, where our LA and Long Beach workers came together in solidarity with elected officials and the community to thank and honor the labor unions and members in our neighborhoods. Today, yesterday, tomorrow, and always, we must stand with our union sisters and brothers in the fight for better wages, working conditions, benefits, and more. On Sunday we celebrated an incredibly successful 1st Annual Harbor City Jazz Festival at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park! It was beautiful to see the park filled with people of all ages enjoying the live performances. It was a great day spent with neighbors enjoying jazz music in our community! As the City of LA experiences high temperatures this weekend, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health cautions residents who are planning to visit the swim area of the Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro to avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters. These warnings have been issued due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards when last tested. LADWP will be replacing water pipelines along Avalon Blvd. between Anaheim St. and Harry Bridges Blvd. Work began on September 4th and will be completed in two phases, each lasting approximately 16 weeks.
