We are closely following Judge Carter's recent order that the VA construct thousands of additional new units of housing for homeless and disabled veterans and voiding several land-use leases on the VA campus, including the Brentwood School and UCLA. We are actively meeting with veterans groups and community stakeholders to hear their questions and concerns, including impacts on existing facilities, services, and local utility infrastructure, environmental analyses, compliance timelines, and the VA Master Plan, among other things. I have shared these concerns to Judge Carter and we will continue to monitor court proceedings and community engagement on these critical issues as work is done to restore the VA to its intended purposes.
CD11 is home to the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, our City's oldest and largest wastewater treatment facility, which has been operating since 1894 with multiple expansions and improvements over the last century. Currently, Hyperion manages over 275 million gallons of wastewater every day, and we are really excited about the Hyperion 2035 plan, which will convert Hyperion into a facility that recycles 100% of the city's wastewater. This week, we took time to meet with the teams at Hyperion to thank them for their work on conservation to secure a sustainable water future for Los Angeles.
2024 Pioneer Women Awards
It is with great pride that we recognize Georgina B. Huskey as our 2024 Pioneer Woman of the Year! From her early days as a Cuban immigrant to her distinguished career in social services, Georgina’s dedication to her community shines through. Her emergency preparedness work, including the “Emergency Information Tube” distribution at the National Night Out event, her work with LAPD to bring the Santa Sleigh to Del Rey, and her initiatives with the Lions Club to provide eye exams and glasses to those in need, are just a few of her signature events. Georgina, thank you for all you do in CD11, we are lucky to honor you as our Pioneer Woman of the Year!
Sheriff Luna In Westchester / Playa del Rey
CD11 extends its appreciation to Sheriff Luna for attending the Westchester/Playa Neighborhood Council Public Safety Committee meeting this week. Among other things, Sheriff Luna offered remarks and heard concerns from local residents about homelessness, nuisance properties, and fires and crime at the beach. We all appreciate the engagement and collaboration to improve public safety.
Westchester Arts & Music Festival Shines Despite Setbacks
The Westchester Arts & Music Festival was another brilliant success, bringing together thousands of local residents for an afternoon of music, shopping, food trucks, and family fun. In what feels like a truly LA story, the U-haul full of supplies was stolen the morning of the party, but thanks to the organizers and community members who sprang into action, the day was saved and the event turned out even better than anyone could have predicted. CD11 was out in full force, chatting with locals, answering questions, and organizing residents for Neighborhood Watch!
Mission I'm Possible Returns To Pacific Palisades
It was a pleasure to welcome Foster Warriors back to the Pacific Palisades for their annual Mission I'm Possible 24-hour challenge, pairing former Navy SEALs with youth aging out of the foster care system. Together, they undertook a rigorous 24-hour mentorship—a journey of physical endurance and self-esteem building through a dawn-to-dawn hike in the Santa Monica Mountains. Thank you to our veterans for their continued service, and best wishes to these remarkable young people as they begin their journey into adulthood.
Calling all Westside dog park lovers! On October 21st, Rec & Parks and CD11 will host a community meeting about the upcoming Pacific Palisades Dog Park! We hope that you can join us to learn more—please don't forget to RSVP!
