Her unwavering commitment to uplifting everyone around her, her determination to never leave anyone behind, and her deep-rooted love for Watts have shaped the lives of so many. Long before I decided to run for office, I turned to Sweet Alice for wisdom, and she has been a guiding force in my journey ever since. |

It's not just me—this tradition of walking up to her porch and sitting beside her spans generations of leaders, from Congress members and Senators to Mayors, Supervisors, and Councilmembers. Sweet Alice’s porch has become a place of wisdom for all who have asked for her guidance.
On Monday, we had the privilege of honoring Sweet Alice in a way that reflects her incredible impact. We dedicated the stretch of Lou Dillon Ave., from 107th St. to Santa Ana Blvd. North, as Dr. “Sweet” Alice Row. This street has seen decades of her work and now, it will stand as a permanent reminder of her impact, a fitting testament to the legacy she continues to build at 90 years young. |

While we celebrate Sweet Alice’s incredible contributions, we also recognize the many others in our community who, like her, do the quiet yet important work of uplifting their neighbors, ensuring no one is left behind. These individuals are the backbone of the One-Five and I am endlessly grateful for them. |

On Tuesday, at our Trade, Travel, and Tourism Committee hearing, where I serve as Vice Chair, we reviewed the Mayor's appointment of John A. Perez, former Speaker of the California State Assembly, to the Harbor Commission. I’m grateful to the community members who came downtown to City Hall to ensure their voices were heard. While commissions should reflect the broader city, the Harbor Commission sets the policies that directly affect the Port of Los Angeles and surrounding communities like Wilmington and San Pedro, which bear the brunt of port operations. I was impressed by Mr. Perez's understanding of both the Port's operations and the key issues our Harbor residents have been raising. He committed to balancing the movement of cargo, environmental cleanup, and job protection, with a focus on supporting the local community and without automation replacing our workers. His strong track record at the state level and his ability to now apply that expertise locally led me to support his appointment, which passed in Council on Friday. However, we still need direct representation from the Harbor community to ensure our local needs are fully addressed. While outside leadership is valuable, it cannot replace the importance of local representation that truly understands our communities. |

Last week, I attended the Narbonne Homecoming game, where the Gauchos dominated the Venice Gondoliers with an impressive 55-7 victory. I was thrilled to meet alumni Boogie Roberts, whose enthusiasm for the team and the community made the experience even more special. His presence highlighted the deep pride that comes with being a Narbonne Gaucho. |

New replacement green fencing was being installed on Western Ave. at 242nd Pl., where sections were missing. We paused the initial work because it didn't meet our community standards, but we're actively collaborating with Caltrans to develop a design that reflects our vision and enhances the area. The on-ramp to the 110 Freeway from Redondo Blvd. experiences increases in traffic when vehicles in the right lane are unaware that it is an on-ramp-only lane. This week Caltrans installed additional signage to clear up any confusion about the freeway on-ramp. ACCESSIBILITY SIDEWALK REPAIRS IN PROGRESS |

We submitted requests for sidewalk repairs for disabled residents who reached out to us for assistance and last week, the Bureau of Street services completed work on one sidewalk at 20th St. and Elanita Dr. and started work on another at 18th St. and Walker Ave. These sidewalk repairs will give residents the ability to safely leave their homes. |

Great job by the Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council leadership for planning and hosting movie night for kids and their families on the fantail of the USS Iowa. It was a unique venue to be on a battleship in the LA Harbor, enjoying Kung Fu Panda under the stars. |

On Saturday, I was honored to welcome everyone to the 30th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture at Pt. Fermin Park, hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture, or FilAM ARTS. FilAm ARTS provides resources and platforms for Filipino-American artists and community members to celebrate and uplift their heritage. The festival began 30 years ago in the Harbor Area, so it was especially meaningful to bring it back to Pt. Fermin this year. |

On Wednesday, we hit the streets with the East Side Riders Bike Club and Sisters of Watts to inform Watts residents about how to request water testing from LADWP. A recent study by the Better Watts Initiative revealed concerning levels of lead in the water in some locations in Watts. The only way to know if there’s lead in your tap water is to have it tested by an accredited laboratory, as lead cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled in water. Customers can contact the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s Water Quality Customer Care team for free water quality testing at waterquality@ladwp.com or by calling (213) 367-3182. |

NEW FOOTBALL FIELD AT NICKERSON |

Nickerson Gardens is now home to a beautiful new football field, thanks to the generous contribution of the LA Rams! On Tuesday, we attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the field which will be a fantastic space for youth in Nickerson Gardens to play, grow, and pursue their athletic dreams. In addition, the field will be open to the community at large to enjoy. I look forward to seeing the impact this new football field will have on the children and families in this community! |

ADA-accessible ramps are being constructed along Weigand Ave. and 103rd St. The project is creating ramps on the east side of Weigand Ave., where none previously existed. The estimated completion date is next week. This improvement will provide better access for pedestrians heading to 103rd St. from Weigand Ave., whether walking kids to school or crossing the street to Jordan High School. In addition, the Bureau of Street Lighting has been repairing the lights at the corner of 103rd St. and Weigand Ave., as well as those leading up to the corner. We look forward to the completed ramps, curbs, and proper lighting. |

This past Wednesday evening, I had the opportunity to meet with the Greenbelt Community Group to discuss ongoing concerns in Wilmington. I was joined by Kmond Day, our office’s Unhoused Services Deputy, who provided valuable insight into the process of addressing encampments. Our office offers a variety of resources to support those in need, from mental health services to housing assistance. Together, we are working diligently to make Wilmington a better place for everyone. Thank you to the Greenbelt Community Group for your continued dedication and collaboration in these efforts. |

Every Thursday, the Wilmington Community Farm provides residents with a wonderful opportunity to receive fresh, healthy produce through its weekly produce giveaway. El martes, en nuestra audiencia del Comité de Comercio, Viajes y Turismo, donde soy Vicepresidente, revisamos el nombramiento por parte del alcalde de John A. Perez, ex presidente de la Asamblea del Estado de California, para la Comisión Portuaria. Agradezco a los miembros de la comunidad que vinieron al Ayuntamiento del centro para asegurarse de que sus voces fueran escuchadas. Si bien las comisiones deben reflejar la ciudad en general, la Comisión Portuaria establece las políticas que afectan directamente al Puerto de Los Ángeles y a las comunidades circundantes como Wilmington y San Pedro, que soportan la peor parte de las operaciones portuarias. Me impresionó la comprensión del Sr. Pérez tanto de las operaciones del puerto como de los temas clave que nuestros residentes del puerto han estado planteando. Se comprometió a equilibrar el movimiento de carga, la limpieza ambiental y la protección del empleo, con un enfoque en apoyar a la comunidad local y sin que la automatización reemplace a nuestros trabajadores. Su sólido historial a nivel estatal y su capacidad para aplicar ahora esa experiencia a nivel local me llevaron a apoyar su nombramiento, que fue aprobado en el Consejo el viernes. Sin embargo, todavía necesitamos representación directa de la comunidad de Harbor para garantizar que nuestras necesidades locales se aborden plenamente. Si bien el liderazgo externo es valioso, no puede reemplazar la importancia de una representación local que realmente comprenda a nuestras comunidades. |

30° FESTIVAL DE ARTES FILAMÉTICAS |

El sábado tuve el honor de darles la bienvenida a todos al 30º Festival FilAm ARTS en Pt. Fermin Park, organizado por la Asociación para el Avance de las Artes y la Cultura Filipino Americano. FilAm ARTS proporciona recursos y plataformas para que los artistas y miembros de la comunidad filipino-estadounidenses celebren y eleven su herencia. El festival comenzó hace 30 años en el área del puerto, por lo que fue especialmente significativo traerlo de regreso a Pt. Fermín este año. |

RAMPAS ACCESIBLES PARA ADA |

Se están construyendo rampas accesibles según la ADA a lo largo de Weigand Ave. y la calle 103. El proyecto está creando rampas en el lado este de Weigand Ave., donde antes no existía ninguna. La fecha estimada de finalización es la próxima semana. Esta mejora brindará un mejor acceso a los peatones que se dirigen a la calle 103 desde Weigand Ave., ya sea caminando con los niños a la escuela o cruzando la calle hacia Jordan High School. El miércoles pasado por la noche, tuve la oportunidad de reunirme con el Grupo Comunitario de Greenbelt para discutir las preocupaciones actuales en Wilmington. Me acompañó Kmond Day, el adjunto de Servicios para Personas sin Vivienda de nuestra oficina, quien brindó información valiosa sobre el proceso de abordar los campamentos. Nuestra oficina ofrece una variedad de recursos para ayudar a quienes los necesitan, desde servicios de salud mental hasta asistencia de vivienda. Juntos, estamos trabajando diligentemente para hacer de Wilmington un lugar mejor para todos. Gracias al Greenbelt Community Group por su continua dedicación y colaboración en estos esfuerzos. |

Todos los jueves, Wilmington Community Farm brinda a los residentes una maravillosa oportunidad de recibir productos frescos y saludables a través de su sorteo semanal de productos.
