Yesterday, I had the honor of bringing in the Banning High School Pilots' City Section Championship-winning Girls Flag Football Team to the Los Angeles City Council Chambers!
Not only was this their first season competing, but the Pilots also ended it as champions—an achievement that speaks to their determination, teamwork, and resilience. And, this was more than just a championship title; it speaks to the power of opportunity and the bright future of girls' sports. |

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, sports has played an important role in shaping female leaders. Athletics instill discipline, teamwork, and tenacity—qualities that empower young women to perform not just on the field, but in the classroom and their communities. When girls see doors opening in sports that may have once been unavailable to them, they gain the confidence to break barriers throughout their lives.
Girls' sports provide more than just competition; they develop leadership skills and the courage to take on challenges. The Banning Pilots Girls Flag Football Team serves as an inspiration for young women in the One-Five and throughout our city, and a reminder of how important it is to invest in girls' sports—because an investment in girls' sports is an investment in their futures. |

On a personal note, this week has been incredibly special, filled with moments of pride for the accomplishments of two exceptional former colleagues. On Sunday, I had the honor of attending the community swearing-in of my former business partner and friend, Charuni Patibanda-Sanchez, as the Secretary of State of Delaware. Then, on the following Wednesday, I had the privilege of welcoming former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia, Nathalie Rayes, to Council Chambers. A dedicated public servant, Nathalie served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Mayor Jim Hahn when I was Chief of Staff. In 2023, President Biden appointed her as U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, recognizing her leadership and expertise. Seeing both of these remarkable women, Charuni and Nathalie, excel in their careers and dedicate themselves to public service couldn’t make me more proud to be their friend and former colleague. |

This week, the Public Safety Committee received an important update on an item related to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s inspection and oversight of the Rancho LPG facility in the Harbor Area. For over 50 years, the facility has stored propane and butane, posing potential fire, explosion, and environmental risks. Despite oversight from multiple agencies, concerns remain about its impact on public safety and inclusion in the City’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). We initially heard this item in the Trade, Travel, and Tourism Committee at the end of last year and followed up with additional inquiries regarding the Fire Department’s resources and protocols at the site.
Yesterday, I introduced a motion directing the Emergency Management Department (EMD) and other city departments, including LAFD, to assess whether Rancho LPG is properly assessed as a risk in the LMHP and how to better mitigate any current or future risk it presents. The report will evaluate hazards while considering the facility’s proximity to residential, recreational, and commercial areas. Additionally, the motion calls for strengthening regional coordination among Los Angeles, neighboring cities, fire departments, and emergency agencies to ensure a unified response strategy for hazardous facilities. |

Accepted items include appliances, automotive parts, and scrap metal, while hazardous waste, medical waste, and liquid waste are prohibited. Residents must provide proof of residency with a current LADWP bill and a state-issued ID. |

SAIL GP RETURNS TO THE WATERFRONT |

SailGP returns to the LA Waterfront next weekend, March 15-16, bringing the Rolex Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix to the Port of Los Angeles' Outer Harbor at Berth 46. This high-speed sailing competition will feature 12 national teams racing hydrofoiling 50-foot catamarans capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 mph. The event offers free entry for L.A. first responders, opportunities to donate to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, and a variety of ticketed viewing options, including grandstand seating and on-water experiences. An illegal dump was recently cleared outside a townhome community, and many residents may not realize that leaving large items on the curb without proper disposal is considered illegal dumping. For over 60 years, Eastview has brought baseball to the youth of San Pedro, while San Pedro Girls Softball League has provided a place for young athletes to develop and hone their skills. It was an honor to present certificates to two deserving businesses. Physical Therapy San Pedro is committed to helping patients become stronger and healthier, offering a variety of services including concussion rehabilitation, physical therapy, dance physical therapy, and strength and conditioning. Port Town Fitness is dedicated to helping its clients achieve their health and fitness goals through dynamic kickboxing classes, high-intensity circuit training, and open gym access. The ribbon-cutting celebrated both businesses, and there were refreshments, free injury screenings and a five-minute jump test with prizes. |

Esta semana, el Comité de Seguridad Pública recibió una actualización importante sobre un tema relacionado con la inspección y supervisión del Departamento de Bomberos de Los Ángeles (LAFD) en la instalación de Rancho LPG en el Área del Puerto. Durante más de 50 años, esta instalación ha almacenado propano y butano, lo que representa posibles riesgos de incendio, explosión y daños ambientales. A pesar de la supervisión de múltiples agencias, persisten las preocupaciones sobre su impacto en la seguridad pública y su inclusión en el Plan Local de Mitigación de Riesgos (LHMP) de la ciudad. Este tema fue discutido inicialmente en el Comité de Comercio, Viajes y Turismo a finales del año pasado, donde se realizaron preguntas adicionales sobre los recursos y protocolos del Departamento de Bomberos en el sitio.
