A message from our new Mayor

Kia ora koutou katoa

I am delighted to be writing to you all as the new Waikato District Council Mayor and would like to say a huge thank you to any of you who supported my campaign for election. For those who didn’t or who don’t know me yet, I look forward to earning your trust and confidence in my abilities and to leading my team of Councillors - nine of them newly elected - to deliver on our promise of Liveable, Thriving, and Connected communities across the Waikato district.

I am passionate about leading this Council and can promise you that I have the best interests of our entire district at heart albeit that I live in the far north of our district, on the awa at Port Waikato, and have served as Councillor for the Tuakau-Pokeno General Ward for the past nine years. I specifically stood to be a representative out of my own ward so that I could push myself to learn more about the diversity and growth challenges within some of our most complex communities. It has been quite the apprenticeship, and over this time I have seen and experienced a huge amount of activity that will serve as a solid foundation for my mayoralty over this next triennium.

Ngaa mihi
Mayor Jacqui

Food safety rules

There’s nothing worse then food poisoning after buying what you thought was a delicious feed. That’s why every business that sells food needs to be registered. It doesn’t matter if it’s sold in a shop, food truck or on Facebook.

This may mean you need to get your business registered with Council under the Food Act 2014 and get checked. Cooking and selling food for profit without registration is illegal. However, there are some exemptions. Read more

Do you use or visit our parks and reserves?

The Waikato district is home to 55 playgrounds and a whopping 484 local parks spanning a total of 2177 hectares.

To manage these spaces, we have nine different Reserve Management Plans (RMPs), all of which are guided by the General Policies RMP – and it's up for review!

Take a look at the draft plan and let us know if you agree or disagree with the proposed changes by 5pm Monday 12 December!
Read more and share your feedback.

No permission required to build up to 3 stories high. Do you agree?

Waikato District Council is being forced to notify a variation to the district plan that will increase housing density by dramatically relaxing planning rules. Changes will allow for development of up to three homes, and up to 11 metres high, without needing a resource consent or permission from neighbours in Ngaruawaahia, Huntly, Tuakau and Pokeno. Do you agree?

Let us know what you think by 5pm, Friday 28 October.
