Get your pups out for breast cancer!

The Waikato district Animal Control team team are raising funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ by holding a pink walk and playdate for you and your pups this weekend!

Event details are:

10.30AM – 1.30PM on Saturday 29 October – Pink Walk around Lake Kainui, Horsham Downs

10.30AM – 1.30PM on Sunday 30 October – Pink Playdate at Pokeno Dog Park, Pokeno

Come along, dress up in pink and enjoy a great morning!

Overnight water shutdown

There will be a shutdown of Pokeno's water supply overnight on Tuesday 1 November. A watermain needs to be relocated so water will be shut off from about 9pm to 5am.

Please plan ahead and store some drinking water at home ahead of the shutdown.

However, there will be a water tanker in Pokeno at the playground on the corner of Hillpark Drive and Glenkirk Crescent, should any body in the community need it overnight.

Haere mai, welcome to our new Council.

Last week, we officially welcomed our newly elected members in their capacity as Ward Councillors and Mayor of the Waikato District Council.

The ceremony saw nine brand-new elected members take their space on our Council, headed by Mayor Jacqui Church and Deputy Carolyn Eyre.

Time for a refresh

Expect to see a change in the streets of Ngaruawahia, Huntly and Pokeno this summer as Citycare Property complete our annual plant and flowerbed change-over.

What happens to the plants when they are pulled out? Plants that are still in reasonable condition go to the local community to distribute.

While in winter months we often plant varieties of vegetables, these are quite bitter to human tastebuds but they taste pretty good to horses. This year the old silverbeet was dropped off to Hope Rising Farm CharitableTrust. Read more about Hope Rising.

Expressway closures

Work has started on the Ngaruawahia section of the Waikato Expressway.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is undertaking improvements to bring this section up to the same standard as neighbouring expressway sections, built for a speed limit of 110km/h.

Key dates:
30 Oct-10 Nov: North-bound detours via Ngaruawahia
13-24 Nov south-bound detours via Ngaruawahia

No new bottle stores

No new standalone bottle stores will be able to open in Tuakau, Te Kauwhata, Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Raglan following changes to our Local Alcohol Policy.

The Provisional Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) was adopted by Council on 6 October 2022 and sees a number of changes, all of which strive to help reduce alcohol related harm in its communities. Read more.

Did you drop, cover and hold?

Ragan to go solar

Raglan will soon be home to the district's first solar-powered wastewater treatment plant!

Over 390 solar panels have been installed, generating enough power to operate the wastewater treatment plant, with surplus power being fed into the national grid. Read more.

Are you watching your speed?

School is back and this means there are a lot of little people walking to and from school.

Please remember to reduce your speed around school grounds to ensure our tamariki's safety.
