CHUMASH

Parshas Vezos Habracha - Shvi'i with Rashi

This is the very last part of the Torah!

Moshe went up onto Har Nevo, like Hashem told him to. Hashem showed him Eretz Yisroel, and everything that would happen to the Yidden there.

“This is the land I promised to the Avos,” Hashem told Moshe. “I am letting you look at it, but you can’t go in. You will tell the Avos that I did what I promised and gave it to the Yidden!”

Then Hashem took Moshe’s neshama with a “kiss,” like He did with Aharon Hakohen. Hashem buried Moshe Himself on Har Nevo. Hashem didn’t let anyone see exactly where Moshe was buried.

Moshe was 120 years old when he passed away. Because he was a tzadik, even after he passed away, his holy body didn’t change.

All of the men cried for Moshe for a month, because they missed learning his Torah. (When Aharon passed away, the women cried just as much, because Aharon made shalom between them and their husbands.)

Yehoshua became the leader over the Yidden, and they listened to him. Still, there was never another Navi like Moshe — Hashem talked to him “face to face,” he was able to be very brave and able to go to Paraoh, he was very strong to carry the Luchos, he did so many Nissim, and most of all he loved the Yidden so much, that he was ready to save them even when he had to break the Luchos!

TEHILLIM

97 - 103

In today’s Tehillim there is a posukMoshe VeAharon BeChohanov, U’Shmuel BeKorei Shemo.”

The Gemara explains from this posuk that compares Shmuel to Moshe and Aharon, that Shmuel Hanavi in his generation was as great as Moshe and Aharon in their generation!

The Rebbe teaches us that when the Yidden went out of Mitzrayim, Hashem gave them TWO leaders: Moshe, who taught them the Torah that is the same for everyone, and Aharon, who helped each person do their best to connect to Torah on their own level.

Shmuel Hanavi was able to do BOTH jobs together — to teach Yidden the truth, AND to help everyone according to their own level.

The Rebbe tells us that the Chabad Rebbes were each like Shmuel, who have both kochos together — they teach us Torah and how we need to serve Hashem, and help each one of us come closer to doing our own special shlichus.

TANYA

Igeres Hakodesh Siman Chof-Gimmel

When a minyan of Yidden come together, there is such an amazing chayus from Hashem that it is even impossible to feel it in this world!

It is very sad that when a minyan is together in Shul, after davening, people waste their time and talk about shtus. That time should only be used for holy things that will make Hashem comfortable and proud!

When we don’t use that time right, it is like pushing Hashem away Chas Veshalom! It keeps the Shechinah in Golus longer, and we don’t want that — we want Moshiach now! So we need to use all of our time in Shul for learning Torah, so we will bring the Geulah faster!

HAYOM YOM

Chof Tishrei

When we are shaking the Lulav, we have a minhag to touch the Lulav to the place by our heart where we bang when we say the paragraph of “Ashamnu” (the place in davening where we ask Hashem to forgive us for our Aveiros).

Once at a Farbrengen, the Rebbe Rashab explained this:

The two feelings of being serious before davening and being happy during davening are connected! By preparing for davening in a serious way, like when we decide to make our behavior the best it can be, we can be full of joy when we connect to Hashem in davening.

In Tishrei, we have two Yomim Tovim which are like the “before davening” and “during davening” that we have every day!

Yom Kippur is like before davening, when we realize that we need to be serious about how we behave. We say Ashamnu many times, thinking about the things we need to do better.

Sukkos is like during davening! It is a Yom Tov that is full of simcha, the way our davening should be full of simcha.

These two are also connected — by being serious on Yom Kippur, we are able to have simcha on Sukkos! That is why we first touch the Lulav to our heart, the place where we “klapAshamnu, before continuing to shake the Lulav. That reminds us about how the Yomim Tovim are connected, that being serious at the right time brings us simcha on Sukkos and then throughout the year.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #150 - Mitzvas Asei #22, Lo Saasei #67, Asei #35, Lo Saasei #83, 84

Today we learn a few mitzvos!

1) (Mitzvas Asei #22) Leviim need to guard the Beis Hamikdash all night. It isn’t because we are worried about thieves, but having guards shows kavod for the Beis Hamikdash.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Korach: וְאַתָּה וּבָנֶיךָ אִתָּךְ לִפְנֵי אֹהֶל הָעֵדֻת

The details are explained in Mesechta Tomid perek Alef, and Mesechta Midos.

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #67) It is asur to leave the Beis Hamikdash unguarded.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Korach: וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֵת מִשְׁמֶרֶת הַקֹּדֶשׁ

The details are explained in the beginning of Mesechta Tomid and Mesechta Midos.

3) (Mitzvas Asei #35) We need to have special oil to put on the Kohen Gadol and a King, to make them ready for the job (Shemen Hamishcha).

Even though Shemen Hamishcha was also used for the keilim of the Mishkan when they were first made, that was a one-time thing and not part of this mitzvah which lasts forever.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Emor: וְהַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל מֵאֶחָיו אֲשֶׁר יוּצַק עַל רֹאשׁוֹ שֶׁמֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה

The details are explained in the beginning of Mesechta Krisus.

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #83) We are not allowed to make a kind of oil that’s like the Shemen Hamishcha to use for anything else!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Sisa: וּבְמַתְכֻּנְתּוֹ לֹא תַעֲשׂוּ כָּמֹהוּ

The details are explained in Mesechta Krisus perek Alef.

5) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #84) We can’t smear the Shemen Hamishcha on any other person —it should only be used for the Kohen Gadol and the king!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Sisa: עַל בְּשַׂר אָדָם לֹא יִיסָךְ

The details are explained in Beginning of Mesechta Krisus.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Beis HaBechirah - Klei HaMikdash

In today’s Rambam, we learn the last Perek of Hilchos Beis Habechirah, and the first perakim of Klei Hamikdash — about the keilim that are IN the Beis Hamikdash!

Perek Ches: The Rambam explains how the Leviim and the Kohanim guarded the Beis Hamikdash, and where they stood.

Perek Alef: We learn how the Shemen Hamishcha was made, and how it is used. The keilim in the Beis Hamikdash were different than in the Mishkan — they became holy just by being used and didn’t need the Shemen Hamishcha to be smeared on them. The Rambam also tells us some halachos about these keilim and their kedusha, like what happens if they are broken.

Perek Beis: Now we learn about making the Ketores, and about the mitzvah that the Aron needs to be carried and not transported in a wagon.

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Zechiya U'Matana - Perek Yud-Beis

In this perek we learn about how carefully we listen to the words of a sick person and do exactly what he asked.

INYANA D'YOMA

Hoshaana Rabbah

Starting from the year Tof-Shin-Mem-Alef, the Rebbe would say a sicha every night of Simchas Beis Hashoeivah, speaking about Sukkos, the Ushpizin, and the Chitas of that day. The Rebbe would encourage that there should be Simchas Beis Hashoeivah with dancing in the streets!

The last night of Chol Hamoed Sukkos is Hoshaana Rabbah. As we will learn later, there are many minhagim of Hoshaana Rabbah that keep us busy for most of the night.

The Rebbe said that even on Hoshaana Rabbah, we should still make sure to have a Simchas Beis Hashoeivah and dance for at least a little while. During the day, we should make sure to spend some time on Mivtzoyim and to learn something extra in honor of Yom Tov.

We might wonder how we can do all of those things, but if we try our best, Hashem will give us the koach to get it all done!

TEFILLAH

Hoshaana Rabbah

Hoshaana Rabbah is when Hashem gives us the “receipt” for the Kesiva Vachasima Tova that we got on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. That is why some people wish each other “A Gutte Kvittel,” a good receipt.

(We see that sometimes the Rebbe would write Gmar Chasima Tova even after Yom Kippur, because the conclusion is not until Hoshaana Rabbah.)

There are many paragraphs we say at the end of Hoshaanos in davening on Hoshaana Rabbah, to ask Hashem to help us that everything will be good!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Hoshaana Rabbah

Tonight and tomorrow is Hoshaana Rabah.

During the day tomorrow we will say a much longer Hoshaanos, and before that we will go around the Bimah SEVEN times instead of one! At the end of Hoshaanos we will “klap” (hit) Hoshaanos, by banging five Aravos on the floor and saying the Yehi Ratzon printed in the siddur.

Tonight, the night of Hoshaana Rabbah, we stay up the whole night! We say the whole Chumash Devarim, and after Chatzos we say the whole Tehillim in Shul. After we finish the Tehillim, the Gabbai gives out apples and honey like on Rosh Hashana! This time, though, we eat it in the Sukkah — so Hashem will give us a sweet year!

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

A Sign of the Geulah

The Rebbe points out something amazing about nowadays:

For the first time ever in Golus, NOBODY is stopping us from being proud Jews and sharing Yiddishkeit with others. There are no laws against it and nobody threatening us to stop.

Now it is just up to us, to use this special time to do as much as we can!

This is a very important preparation for the Geulah, when Moshiach will unite the world to know Hashem!
