CHUMASH

Parshas Vayeitzei - Shishi with Rashi

Yaakov leaves Charan with his family. When Lavan finds out, he chases them and catches up with them. He is angry that they didn’t say that they are leaving, and that someone took his idols.

Since it was time to go, Yaakov started to travel back towards Eretz Yisroel, to his father Yitzchak. He took all of the animals and money that he had earned.

Lavan had gone off to shear his sheep (cut their hair), so he wasn’t home. Rochel took her father’s idols away, hoping he would stop serving Avodah Zarah. Yaakov didn’t tell Lavan he was going, and ran away with all of his family and his things.

Yaakov wanted it to be very clear why he left Eretz Yisroel to get married: In order to have children who would do Hashem’s job in this world! So he put his children in front, even though it is usually more respectful to let the parents go first.

Three days later, Lavan found out that Yaakov had run away. So he took his family and chased after him, catching up with him at Har Gilad. Hashem appeared to Lavan in a dream and told him not even to try to be nice to Yaakov, since Yaakov doesn’t trust him anymore.

Lavan was very upset at Yaakov: “You tricked me and ran away with my daughters like they are prisoners of war! Why didn’t you tell me you were going? I would have made you a goodbye party with music, and like this, you didn’t even give me a chance to kiss my grandchildren goodbye! That wasn’t nice!

“I would hurt you now, except that Hashem warned me to be careful what I say to you. But why did you run away like this? I knew you wanted to go home many times, but I told you why you should stay — you got very rich in my house. And why did you steal my idols?”

Yaakov answered Lavan in order: “I was afraid to tell you I was going because maybe you would take away Rochel and Leah. And to take your idols?! If anyone did it, they will die. Go see who took them and take them back!” (Yaakov didn’t know that Rochel took them, but because he said this, that’s one of the reasons Rochel passed away along the way.)

Lavan went first into Rochel’s tent, and then into Leah’s. Then he looked in Rochel’s tent again, but still didn’t find his idols. He looked in Bilhah and Zilpah’s tents, and then went back to Rochel’s tent again because he thought she might have taken them.

Really, Rochel had put the idols into the camel saddle (where you sit). She sat on them, so even though Lavan searched a lot, he didn’t find them. Rochel said sorry that she didn’t get off the camel, but she wasn’t feeling well.

Yaakov was angry with Lavan. “Why did you run after me? You didn’t find anything here that belongs to you! I never stole any animals from you when I was working for you, and if any animal got lost or hurt I paid for it! I worked all day and all night, in the hot sun and freezing cold, and couldn’t even sleep!

“I worked for you for 20 years — 7 years each for Rochel and Leah, and 6 years that I got paid for, and you kept changing your mind what I could get paid! If Hashem hadn’t helped me, you would have sent me away with no money at all! But Hashem saw I worked hard, and He told you last night to be careful what you say.”

TEHILLIM

44 - 48

Today’s shiur Tehillim is kapitelach Mem-Daled to Mem-Ches.

In today’s Tehillim, Dovid Hamelech says, “Shim’i Bas Ure’i Vehati Ozneich, Veshichechi Ameich Ubais Avich.

According to Rashi, this posuk is speaking to the Yidden. It says, “Listen daughter (the Yidden are called daughter), look and pay attention: Forget the nation you come from (the goyim you grew up with) and your father’s house (the house of Terach, who served Avodah Zarah).”

The Frierdiker Rebbe explains this posuk in a maamar!

First of all, a Yid needs to listen and see (“Shim’i Bas Ure’i”) — to figure out the way to live like a Yid should. Second, “Vehati Ozneich” — give your ear to learn Torah.

The second part is the things we should forget: “Shichechi Ameich” — forget the nations you live with! Don’t live like the Goyim, because you are a Yid. “Ubais Ovich” — forget the house of your father, Avraham’s father — don’t do Avodah Zarah like he did!

The Frierdiker Rebbe explains in the maamar how this Medrash teaches us lessons in our Avodas Hashem, how we can become more aidel by learning and davening with kavana.

TANYA

Kuntres Acharon Siman Daled

The Alter Rebbe explains to us today how a gashmiyus mitzvah can accomplish the great things that it does. He gives us a mashal from how a tree grows.

How does a tree grow? There is a tiny seed that is planted in the ground. Hashem put a koach in the ground to make things grow. A seed cant do that by itself — if you put the seed on the floor, a tree won’t grow. This strong koach is only in the earth. But a seed is able to get this koach in the ground to start working and make things grow.

The same is true of mitzvos. A mitzvah is like a seed. It is tiny — the koach of Hashem cant even be seen! But like the seed, it has the koach to cause that Hashem will become revealed in all the ruchniyus worlds!

HAYOM YOM

Ches Kislev

The neshama of a Yid comes from Shomayim to do a special shlichus in this world. When we do our shlichus, it brings a special Nachas Ruach to Hashem!

Just think: Hashem did such a big chesed for us! He made that a person like us, who is so small, can bring a Nachas Ruach to Hashem, Who is so great!

Thinking about this will help us do our shlichus with chayus and excitement.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #198 - Mitzvas Asei #107

Today’s mitzvah is the same one as yesterday:

(Mitzvas Asei #107) When a neshama leaves a body, the body becomes tomei. Someone who touches, carries, or is in the same house as the body gets some of this Tumah too, called Tumas Meis. There are many halachos about how a person can get this tumah, and how the tumah is passed on to other people or things. Today’s mitzvah is to follow all of these halachos!

RAMBAM

Hilchos Tumas Meis

In today’s Rambam, Perakim Yud-Beis, Yud-Gimmel, and Yud-Daled, we are learning about Tumas Meis, and how someone can get this kind of Tumah. There are a few ways to get Tumas Meis — to touch or carry a Meis, or to be under the same roof as a Meis.

The Rambam teaches us what is called “under the same roof” (Ohel). Something strong is counted as a roof — even sturdy branches of a tree! They bring the tumah to whatever is underneath it, but keep the tumah from spreading to whatever is OVER the Ohel (“Meviin Vechotzetzin”).

But something that is not strong and will not stay does not become an Ohel. For example, snow is not counted as a roof, because it will melt. So an igloo, which is made of ice and snow, would not be counted as an Ohel and make things inside it tomei.

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos She'eilah U'Pikadon - Perek Beis

Now we learn that when the owner is working together with the person who borrowed something from him, it’s not counted as borrowing according to halacha. So if you are working on a poster with your friend, and you borrow your friend’s markers since you forgot to bring yours, you don’t have to pay him back even if you stepped on one of the markers and broke it.

If a husband and wife borrow something from each other, it is ALWAYS counted like they are working together! So if your mother borrowed your father’s hammer and broke it, she doesn’t have to buy him a new one.

INYANA D'YOMA

Tanya Baal Peh

The Torah is “Chayeinu V’Orech Yameinu,” our whole life.

This isn’t only talking about while we are learning Torah or doing certain mitzvos, but the Torah is ALWAYS our life!

One of the ways that we make sure the Torah is always with us is by knowing parts of Torah Baal Peh!

As the Alter Rebbe explains, that helps us ALL the time, even if we are not thinking about them! Since we know them by heart, they are always in our minds, together with us.

Knowing these words of Torah will also help us when we don’t have a sefer with us, like when we are walking down the street or eating or lying in bed. We will be able to think about these words, and fill our minds up with kedusha so that not-good thoughts can’t come in!

And, of course, we will also always have words of Torah to share with others.

R’ Mendel Futerfas A”H was a well-known mashpia.

Once, R’ Mendel asked a respected chossid what had happened in his yechidus. The chossid answered that he had asked how he can be mekushar to the Rebbe.

The Rebbe told this man that he should learn Tanya Baal Peh and review it when he is walking in the street. “This way,” the Rebbe told him, “you will be mekushar to me, because I also review Tanya when I am walking in the street.”

One of the Rebbe’s Mivtzoyim campaigns is called Mivtza Chinuch. This means teaching Torah!

The Rebbe explained that the mivtza isn’t only to teach Torah to OTHER people, it is also to give OURSELVES Chinuch, to learn Torah ourselves! And of course, this mivtza isn’t only for adults, it is for kids too!

As part of Mivtza Chinuch, the Rebbe wanted kids to make sure to also know words of Torah by heart. The Rebbe started by teaching 12 very important pesukim that kids should learn Baal Peh! This way, they will always be able to think about them — even when eating or drinking or playing — and be able to share words of Torah with their friends.

TEFILLAH

Kabolas Shabbos

In Maariv of Shabbos there are two parts: Kabolas Shabbos and Maariv.

In Kabolas Shabbos, we welcome Shabbos. This is how we do it:

First, we say six kapitelach of Tehillim, matching up to the six days of the week that just passed.

Then we say the paragraph of Ana B’Koach, which brings us up to a higher level in Ruchnius, since we are now going into Shabbos. Afterwards, we say three pieces in honor of Shabbos:

1) Lecha Dodi

2) Two kapitelach of Tehillim that speak about Shabbos

3) A piece of the Zohar, which speaks about the Ruchnius inyan of Shabbos, what happens in Shomayim on Shabbos and down here as well.

With these Tefillos we are Mekabel Shabbos.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Bentching Licht with Shabbos Clothes

It is a very good minhag of women to put on their Shabbos clothes before bentching licht. It shows kavod for the Shabbos licht and for Shabbos itself, which starts right after lighting our candles!

But if someone is running late, it is better to bentch licht wearing weekday clothes, than to bentch licht very close to Shkiyah, which might chas veshalom possibly end up as Chillul Shabbos.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Little Mitzvos, Big Kochos!

Our one mitzvah has the power to bring the Geulah! That is what the Rambam paskens in Hilchos Teshuvah.

But how is this possible? How can just one little person, with their one little mitzvah, make a HUGE difference for the whole world? One thing compared to the whole world is like less than one drop of water in the whole ocean!

The Rebbe teaches that when we do a mitzvah with the kavana to bring Moshiach, we are using the piece of Moshiach that is inside of ourselves! With the Moshiach koach, the mitzvah we are doing is full of tremendous koach — it can change the world and bring the Geulah!
