February 2023

Coweta Beekeepers Association Monthly Newsletter

Hello, my fellow beekeepers!
We had a fantastic turnout for our January Introduction to Beekeeping course. We increased participation from over 50 participants last year to 67 this year; how exciting! 😊 We had some wonderful feedback on the FB page; it just lets us know that we provide the type of education you all want to see and hear. I want to thank our Coordinator, Bobby Torbush, who has been organizing this course for around eight years, and our speakers, demonstrators, and volunteers. It’s such a fun day to be had by all. We welcome our new students now as members of Coweta Beekeepers Association. We hope to see you at the February monthly meeting!

Thank you,
Heather Shinn, President

Confessions of a New-Bee (keeper)
By Jennifer Mugerditchian

Welcome to both our returning and new members!  My name is Jennifer and I’m 10 months in to my first year as a Beekeeper.  I’ll be posting a short article every month on the tips, tricks and resources that helped me in my first year of beekeeping, as well as things that went wrong.

I’m the kind of person who needs to learn as much as possible before trying something new.  After the short course last year, I spent time at the now-defunct Young Harris Institute and the Georgia Beekeepers Conference.  I ordered and read a number of books and spent my time stuck in Atlanta traffic listening to podcasts like the Hive Jive and Beekeeper Confidential.  There are various YouTube channels including Georgia’s own Bob Binnie and online forums like www.beesource.com where I listened and searched for answers to my questions.  By far, my greatest resource was the club.  The monthly meetings, mentoring sessions and in-person workshops really boosted my confidence and helped me grow my knowledge.

My point is, there are a lot of options out there as you start and continue your journey but ultimately it is just that – YOUR journey.  You will make mistakes, you will lose hives and you will get stung.  It’s all a part of the learning experience.  For the February meeting, we’ve got Corey Matheson talking about swarms and I’d like to recommend the November 12, 2022 episode of Beekeeper Confidential ‘Swarm Vibroacoustics’.  The host recorded the sounds of a colony leading up to and during a swarm event.  With the season upon us, it’s a great way to spend 30 minutes of your time to hear the queen piping and other noises.  See you next month!

Weather, nectar, and pollen for February
By Steven Page

Our weather continues to be warm and wet.  Since January 1, many days have been warmer than average and rainy. Total rain since January 1 is almost 9 inches.  Rain washes nectar off of flowers.

If the warm weather continues, and outlooks indicate the warmth will continue for three weeks, swarm season will start before March 1. Some colonies are already raising queens.   Drones are common in many colonies.

Maple trees continue to produce nectar and pollen.

Forsythia is starting to blossom.

Dandelions are starting to blossom.
