Franklin Baptist Church
14 February 2023

To the church family

This is the fourth of our FBC Leadership Team (LT) updates.

Arrangements for the Palmer’s farewell this Sunday 19th Feb – deferred from the 12th Feb due to Covid in the Palmer household

This Sunday 19th Feb, covid permitting, we will have a shortened 10am morning service, followed by a farewell morning tea in the café.

During the service we have a few things arranged to acknowledge Tim, Jenni and whānau, but there will be a chance for others to give a word of encouragement afterwards at the morning tea.

Search Committee Nominations

As mentioned in our last update on 23 December, the LT is delighted to have already received several nominations for potential Search Committee (SC) members.  We now wish to outline the process for further nominations.

We would ask that any remaining nominations be sent to leaders@franklinbaptist.org.nz, no later than Weds 1 March. We expect to appoint a committee of between 5 and 8 people.

It is important to read the Search Committee Information Pack to
get a good sense of what the SC will do, and the characteristics needed for SC members.

The Baptist Union advises that the next step, before the SC can begin its important work, is for the FBC Leadership Team to develop a “brief”.  This brief will define the tasks and parameters of the SC.

The brief will also contain content that will be given to prospective candidates, including information about our vision/mission and our staffing structure.

Vision/Mission

Many of you will recall our Discernment Service late last year.  Groups were positive and forward looking with excellent input. We want to continue to build on this work so that we have a more up to date vision/mission document to include in the candidate brief, and to discuss with the Search Committee.

Our service together on 26 February will be our Looking Forward Sunday. In this service, we will share a summary of what came out of the discernment service workshops, and talk more together about the kind of church we want FBC to be.  Unfortunately with the Palmer’s farewell being rescheduled I will be in Australia that weekend, but the Staff and Leadership Team will lead the programme.

Longer Term Staffing Structure

As well as having an up to date mission/vision in place, we also need to consider what staff structure we think will best facilitate the achievement of that vision, whilst at the same time ensuring a healthy staff working environment.  The LT is looking at various models which are in place across Baptist Churches in NZ at this time, and a future LT update will share what we have found.

Interim Staffing Structure / Roles and Responsibilities

While Steve is picking up several areas of responsibility, there are other tasks requiring a home.  The LT has been mapping these out to ensure continuity and will soon publish information about the staff team responsibilities so that there is good visibility of what sits where.

Keeping you informed

We hope that these updates are useful, but as noted in our last communication, if there are other things that you would like us to communicate more on, we would love to hear your ideas.  Please do send those, and any questions you may have, to leaders@franklinbaptist.org.nz
