Dear Friends,

We have completely revamped our website and are excited to share it with you. And, we have a small request which you can read below...

NEW WEBSITE

Our goal has always been to provide a wide variety of information dedicated to implementing Restorative Practices in Schools, the Juvenile and Criminal Justice System, in Colleges and Universities, and in the wider Community in general. (The tagline of our logo says it all.) We continue to add new research papers, interesting articles, and our own blog posts to the site as well as current information about our Training Institutes.

If you have a moment, please come by and take a look at Our New Website. And, if you have any feedback or suggestions, let us know!

EXPANDING OUR WORK
Do you have any people we should contact who might be interested in bringing Restorative Practices into their district, school or organization?

We have recently finished with some longer term projects and we have expanded our training capacity with additional trainers and even a Lead Evaluator and Strategic Thought Partner, so we thought it best to reach out to you all to ask for people we should contact who might be interested in Restorative Practices. Maybe it's the district next door, or the Justice System in your community or a colleague you know in another town or state. Or maybe it's your own school or district. Building out from where you are helps seed the philosophy so it becomes part of the fabric of your community. Either way, we'd love to be introduced to more people so we can expand our network. Contact Catherine Childs for Colleges/Universities and Juvenile/Criminal Justice System projects. Any successful lead will be rewarded with a training manual or two of your choice.

OUR NEW LEAD EVALUATOR AND STRATEGIC THOUGHT PARTNER
In our work to evaluate Restorative Practices efforts in New York City Public Schools, which is just beginning, we came across Dr. Sonia Jain, the lead evaluator for the Oakland Unified School District. We really hit it off and she has now agreed to be a member of our team. So, if your school or district wants to do a more thorough job evaluating your implementation efforts, get in touch with us. We're excited to have her on board! And, if you're interested in the final evaluation report for OUSD or to work with us to do a year end evaluation of your efforts, contact us. Now is the time to begin your evaluations of the year!

REPORTING ON RESTORATIVE PRACTICES INITIATIVES
We're almost always thrilled when reporters cover Restorative Practices efforts. In fact, ProPublica will be coming out with a long story on the discipline issues in New Mexico schools and will report on our work in Shiprock and with Tse Bit A'i Middle School.

However, in the article
, "The Ins and Outs of Restorative Justice in Schools" two longtime practitioners, McCammon and Bechet, said reporters covering local restorative programs should look at a few factors to see if it is being done with fidelity:
  • Were teachers and the community involved in the shift?
  • How much training did teachers receive? Everyone? Or just a few?
  • Is there a process for all to reflect on how restorative justice is working and to adjust the strategy over time?
  • Is it a mandate from a central office or is it supported by the school?
  • Does the school embrace other strategies that might support restorative justice, such as attention to social and emotional learning?
So, to all the reporters out there, take note. :-)

Thanks for being part of our community of practice and helping us expand to create a better, more peaceful world for all of us.

All the best,

Randy Compton, President                          Catherine Childs, Principal
