MAKING MOVIES THAT MATTER
Nevada Ave Elementary

Nevada Ave Elementary is one of the many schools telling stories and inspiring future filmmakers through the Making Movies that Matter Film Project (MMTM). For the past three iterations of the project, Nevada Ave Elementary has been a recipient of an MMTM grant from the Council District 12 office.

Fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Frankie Sanchez works with a select group of students to create and produce short films as an extracurricular activity. Through his leadership of the program, Mr. Sanchez provides a safe space for his young students to express themselves, giving them an outlet for their creativity while also making use of his technological savvy. Mr. Sanchez believes that the addition of the Making Movies that Matter Film Project to the student’s extracurricular activities was a no-brainer as the school already provides enrichment for the students with other programs that also focus on the arts. In addition to undertaking the film project, students at Nevada are also able to participate in the Ballet Folklorico Dance team and the school’s First Step Team.

In early 2022, Nevada Ave welcomed new Principal Sarah Bobertz, an educational professional with 20 years of experience and an extensive background in Special Education. As a first-time principal, Ms. Bobertz saw the potential in her new school and was determined to provide the elementary students and staff opportunities they may not have otherwise had by finding ways to implement activities and programs that would enhance their education. Under her leadership, the Folklorico program was expanded, the school’s enrollment has increased by 15%, and she has transformed the Making Movies that Matter Film Project from a limited semester-long endeavor to a full-time school enrichment program that will continuously provide students with the chance to learn the craft of filmmaking.

We thank both Principal Bobertz and Mr. Sanchez for their commitment to their students and for ensuring the kids have a wonderful time while they learn how to make a movie through the MMTM project. We look forward to seeing this school’s film premiere at The Soraya at CSUN on May 18th. Please follow this link to join us and RSVP for what is certain to be a night to remember.

  • 118 Freeway Reseda Off-Ramp Update
According to updates provided to my office from Caltrans, work on the 118 Freeway Reseda off-ramp has been delayed due to water mitigation efforts and supply delays. Caltrans' contractor is moving to a seven-day-a-week work schedule and is developing an updated project timeline to share with the public.

Although Caltrans is a state agency, my office has continued to be at the forefront of pushing for progress and updates in recognition of the fact that our community is impacted by the closure, and we will provide updates as they become available.
