HARBOR BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

On Tuesday we confirmed 3 exceptional individuals to serve on our Board of Harbor Commissioners: a local community advocate, a veteran policy maker in Congress, and a leader in labor. I look forward to working with Lee Williams, former U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and Michael Muñoz to ensure that the Port continues to be an economic engine, while also ensuring that surrounding communities aren’t paying the price for Port operations.

SUPPORT FOR IN-FLIGHT CATERING WORKERS

Yesterday I introduced a motion with Councilmember Traci Park seeking a report of the working conditions for the catering workers who provide in-flight airline meals at Los Angeles International Airport.

On April 10th, the employees of Flying Food Group, who provide in-flight airline meals for a number of airlines, launched an unfair labor practice strike that they have been underpaid and in danger of losing their health benefits.

Our city’s laws are very clear about what our workforce should be paid and if a major company like Flying Food Group is going to ignore this and commit wage theft, the city should right the wrong and protect our workers.

The motion will head next to the Economic and Community Development Committee.

LAFD FIRE SERVICE DAY

Now until 2 PM, head over to 444 South Harbor Blvd in San Pedro to Fire Station 112 for LAFD Fire Service Day. Great for kids and families there will be station tours, the fire engine, water display tools and equipment demonstrations.

NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK

Over the last decade in Los Angeles, Black women made up 33% of all female murder victims and Hispanic women made up 43% of all female murder victims. Furthermore, the mainstream media coverage of Black and Hispanic female victims is covered less frequently and characterized differently than non-Black, non-Hispanic female victims.

Last Saturday I joined Justice for Murdered Children for their National Crime Victims’ Rights Week to call on the media to do better and start covering and sharing these stories.

SMALL BUSINESS RENTAL ASSISTANCE

Applications are NOW OPEN for ROUND 3 of the City of Los Angeles Small Business Rental Assistance Grant Program. Grants of $2,500 up to $15,000 will be available to eligible businesses that need financial assistance to aid in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses must be located within the City of Los Angeles and use the grants to cover some or all of any outstanding location rental fees. The grant may be used for payments due that incurred on or after March 1, 2020 through April 30, 2023. Applications are due May 24, 2023. See here for more information.

FREE LEGAL AID CLINIC

Toberman Neighborhood Center is hosting a FREE legal assistance workshop. The next workshop from 10 AM - 12 PM on May 9th will be Landlord-Tenant focused. Community members will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis with limited slots available.

RESTAURANT ASSISTANCE

Restaurants Care has teamed up with SoCalGas to offer $5,000 grants for independent restaurants. Since 2021, the Restaurants Care Resilience Fund has awarded grants to 788 independent restaurants throughout California. This year they will be offering a spring grant cycle and a fall grant cycle. Apply before May 7th here.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The South East Los Angeles Youth Opportunity (Yo!) Watts YouthSource Center is a youth/young adult-focused resource working to improve educational and employment opportunities for 14-24 year old South Los Angeles residents who are unemployed, out of school and/or facing additional barriers to employment, secondary & postsecondary education.

Currently, the Yo! Watts YouthSource Center has paid summer jobs available for youth and young adults between 14-24 years old. Earn over $2,500 this summer working 160 hours of paid work at $16.04 an hour.

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS JOB OPPORTUNITIES

By keeping L.A. parks open during the warm summer nights, Summer Night Lights curtails crime and provides space and programming for families and young people in our city parks. They are currently hiring for the upcoming 2023 Summer Night Lights program so click here and apply today.

CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

WORKING GROUP ON HOMELESSNESS

My office continues to bring neighbors and community partners together with monthly meetings with the One-Five Working Group on Homelessness. This week we held our meeting in Harbor City and had a special visit from San Pedro High School students to join the  conversation as we address the issue of homelessness and how it affects our entire society.

BLOCKBUSTER BROADWAY

The students and staff of the Humanities and Arts Academy of LA (HArts) put on incredible performances year round. This weekend, I truly enjoyed watching “Blockbuster Broadway 2023” - a medley of famous moments in films brought to life on the stage. A special thank you to Principal Ray Vasquez for inviting me!

CLEANING UP SEPULVEDA

On Saturday, the Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) and their teen program worked to clean the Green Meadows area along Sepulveda Blvd. from Western to Normandie Ave. Save the date for our Harbor City Clean up on May 27th from 8 AM - 1 PM.

CLEAN UP

On Thursday our office, along with the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council and the Boys and Girls Club joined together in a cleanup near the Cheryl Green Center on Denker Ave. and Del Amo Blvd. It was a great turnout, our office was able to work with residents and encourage them to use 311 when bulky items need to be picked up.

STEM EVENT AT 186TH ST. ELEMENTARY

This week the 186th Street Elementary School enjoyed a Computer Science and Robotics event hosted by California State University, Dominguez Hills. The 4th grade  students had a great opportunity to learn about computer science with students from the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

STREET RESURFACING

Next Friday, May 12th through Wednesday, May 16th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave 223rd St. between Normandie and Denker Ave. Vehicle access and parking will be prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

ONE ALLEY AT A TIME

On Saturday morning, I stopped by the Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council’s One Alley at a Time beautification clean up. This was the second time they hosted this event and we worked to clean 12th through 15th Streets in the blocks between Mesa & Centre St.

TRIMMING OVERGROWN PLANTS

This week we were able to clear overgrown vegetation along the flood control channel on Statler St. between Amelia and Taper Ave. The bushes were impeding the street and visibility so our office worked with the Bureau of Sanitation to quickly address the situation.

IGNITE 22

On Thursday I welcomed the entrepreneurs, innovators, and future thinkers who came together to network & explore the Blue Economy industry with exhibits and demonstrations on land and in the water at AltaSea for the Ignite 22 conference. Together we can make sure that the Port works for the people that live near and around the area and who work there and also create the jobs for the future. Thank you to everyone who is working to create a better economy  and a sustainable future for us, for our kids, and for our grandkids.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

On Saturday evening I attended San Pedro High School's production of Little Shop of Horrors. Our student theater programs put on incredible performances year round!

CINCO DE MAYO

Happening now until 1 PM, the San Pedro Community Garden is hosting a fiesta! Located on the top of the hill at 1400 N. Gaffey Street, join us this morning to celebrate our local farmers of San Pedro!

WATTS GANG TREATY ANNIVERSARY

Last Saturday, we met in celebration at the Historic Train Station for the 31st anniversary of the 1992 Watts Gang Treaty. A moment when the neighborhoods came together to take control of their own peace as they worked to uplift and empower the community. It not only made Watts a better place but the entire city of Los Angeles.

CHILDREN’S SAFETY STOP

Our office joined Andre Christian and volunteers from Watts Life Car Club to set up a children’s safety stop every Wednesday morning 7 to 8 AM at the intersection of 103rd St. and Wilmington Ave. as the kids make their way to school. This volunteer service helps create safe passages for our children and families.

CAREER DAY COMING SOON!

My office brought together our city family this week to plan the Watts Career Fair on Thursday, June 29th. The event will take place at various locations including the Children’s Institute Watts Campus. Stay tuned as we roll out this event!

SPRING INTO EMPLOYMENT JOB FAIR

HACLA Watts and the LA WorkSource Center are hosting a job fair for youth and adults at the Maxine Waters Employment Prep Center in Watts. May 18th from 10 AM - 1 PM make sure to bring the required documents in the flyer above!

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE REPAIR TRAFFIC

Too many streets in Wilmington are already impacted by trucks idling, bumper to bumper. Without adequate mitigation, the closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge for repairs will only make it worse.

On Thursday, I spoke to Caltrans at the Project Scoping meeting to demand more outreach to, and mitigations in, the Wilmington community which will bear the brunt of this project through the suggested traffic detour proposals. Click to watch on Instagram and Facebook.

EL DIA DEL NIÑO

Last week we celebrated El Dia del Niño at the Heart of the Harbor Community Farm in Wilmington. Thank you to the  Neighborhood Action Council Wilmington Sin Fronteras for putting together this incredible event.

SANDISON CLEAN UP

Thanks to the collaboration with SBCC, we were able to clean up the cul de sac on East Sandison Street and, after requesting service from 311, reinstall the light pole as well. Now residents will be able to safely park their vehicles.

MS. VENEGAS RETIREMENT CELEBRATION

Last Friday our office joined the retirement celebration for Ms. Irma Venegas. A pillar of the community and member of the East Wilmington Greenbelt Park Neighborhood Watch, Ms. Venegas worked for 30 years for the Long Beach Unified School District. We wish the best for her future endeavors and are grateful for her continuous commitment to the community of Wilmington.

JUNTA DE COMISIONADOS DEL PUERTO

El martes confirmamos a 3 personas excepcionales para servir en nuestra Junta de Comisionados del Puerto: un defensor de la comunidad local, una veterana en la formulación de políticas en el Congreso y un líder laboral. Espero trabajar con Lee Williams, ex representante de EE. UU., Lucille Roybal-Allard y Michael Muñoz para garantizar que el puerto continúe siendo un motor económico y, al mismo tiempo, garantizar que las comunidades aledañas no paguen el precio de las operaciones del puerto.

¡Un agradecimiento especial a los residentes del One-Five por su participación en este proceso y por venir al Ayuntamiento para hacer escuchar su voz!

APOYO A LOS TRABAJADORES DE CATERING EN AEROLÍNEAS

Ayer presenté una moción con la concejal Traci Park en busca de un informe sobre las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores de catering que brindan comidas a bordo de las aerolíneas en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Ángeles.

El 10 de abril, los empleados de Flying Food Group, que brindan comidas a bordo para varias aerolíneas, iniciaron una huelga por prácticas laborales injustas por haber sido mal pagados y en peligro de perder sus beneficios de salud.

Las leyes de nuestra ciudad son muy claras sobre lo que se debe pagar a nuestra fuerza laboral y si una empresa importante como Flying Food Group ignora esto y comete robo de salarios, la ciudad debe corregir el error y proteger a nuestros trabajadores.

La moción se dirigirá al Comité de Desarrollo Económico y Comunitario.

DÍA DEL SERVICIO DE BOMBEROS DE LAFD

Hoy hasta las 2 p.m., diríjase al 444 South Harbor Blvd en San Pedro a la Estación de Bomberos 112 para el Día del Servicio de Bomberos del LAFD. Ideal para niños y familias, habrá recorridos por la estación, el camión de bomberos, herramientas de exhibición de agua y demostraciones de equipos.

SEMANA NACIONAL DE LOS DERECHOS DE LAS VÍCTIMAS DE CRÍMENES

Durante la última década en Los Ángeles, las mujeres afroamericanas representaron el 33% de todas las víctimas femeninas de asesinato y las mujeres hispanas constituyeron el 43% de todas las víctimas de asesinato. Además, la cobertura de los principales medios de comunicación de las víctimas afroamericanas e hispanas se cubre con menos frecuencia y se caracteriza de manera diferente que las víctimas femeninas no afroamericanas ni hispanas.

ASISTENCIA DE ALQUILER PARA PEQUEÑAS EMPRESAS

Las solicitudes YA ESTÁN ABIERTAS para la RONDA 3 del Programa de Subvenciones de Asistencia de Alquiler para Pequeñas Empresas de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles. Las subvenciones van de $2,500 hasta $15,000 estarán disponibles para empresas elegibles que necesitan asistencia financiera para ayudar en su recuperación de la pandemia del COVID-19. Las empresas deben estar ubicadas dentro de la ciudad de Los Ángeles y utilizar las subvenciones para cubrir parte o la totalidad de las tarifas de alquiler de ubicación pendientes. CLÍNICA DE ASISTENCIA LEGAL GRATUITA

El Toberman Neighborhood Center está organizando un taller de asistencia legal GRATUITO. El próximo taller se llevará a cabo el 9 de mayo de 10 am a 12 pm y se centrará en propietarios e inquilinos. Los miembros de la comunidad recibirán asistencia por orden de llegada con espacios limitados disponibles.

ASISTENCIA PARA RESTAURANTES

Actualmente, el Yo! Watts YouthSource Center tiene trabajos de verano pagados disponibles para jóvenes y adultos jóvenes entre 14 y 24 años. Gana más de $2500 este verano trabajando 160 horas de trabajo remunerado a $16.04 la hora.

OPORTUNIDADES DE TRABAJO EN SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS ESTE VERANO

PROGRAMA DE RECICLAJE DE PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS EN LA ACERA

El programa de reciclaje de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, OrganicsLA, se encarga de mantener los desechos orgánicos fuera de los vertederos y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.

El proyecto de ley SB 1383 requiere que todas las jurisdicciones del estado brinden un servicio de recolección de desechos orgánicos. Ahora se les pide a los residentes que coloquen los restos de comida y papel sucio con alimentos junto con los desechos del jardín en el contenedor verde.

GRUPO DE TRABAJO SOBRE PERSONAS SIN HOGAR

Mi oficina continúa reuniendo a vecinos y socios de la comunidad con reuniones mensuales con el Grupo de trabajo del One-Five sobre personas sin hogar. Esta semana tuvimos nuestra reunión en Harbor City y contamos con una visita especial de estudiantes de la preparatoria San Pedro para unirse a la conversación mientras abordamos el problema de la falta de vivienda y cómo afecta a toda nuestra sociedad.

BLOCKBUSTER BROADWAY

Los estudiantes y el personal de la Academia de Humanidades y Artes de Los Ángeles (HArts) realizaron actuaciones increíbles durante todo el año. Este fin de semana, realmente disfruté viendo "Blockbuster Broadway 2023", una mezcla de momentos famosos en películas que cobran vida en el escenario. ¡Un agradecimiento especial al director Ray Vasquez por invitarme!

LIMPIEZA EN SEPULVEDA

El sábado, el Programa de Alternativas a Pandillas (GAP) y su programa para adolescentes trabajaron para limpiar el área de Green Meadows a lo largo de Sepulveda Blvd. desde Western hasta Normandie Ave. Aparte la fecha para nuestra próxima limpieza de Harbor City el 27 de mayo de 8 a.m. a 1 p.m.

LIMPIEZA

El jueves, nuestra oficina, junto con el Concejo Vecinal de Harbor Gateway South y el Boys and Girls Club se unieron en una limpieza cerca del Cheryl Green Center en Denker Ave/ y Del Amo Blvd. Fue una gran participación, nuestra oficina trabajó con los residentes y los alentó a usar el 311 cuando es necesario para recoger artículos voluminosos.

EVENTO STEM EN LA PRIMARIA 186TH ST.

Esta semana, la primaria 186th Street disfrutó de un evento de Ciencias de la Computación y Robótica organizado por la Universidad Estatal de California, Domínguez Hills. Los estudiantes de cuarto grado tuvieron la gran oportunidad de aprender sobre informática con estudiantes de los programas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM) en Cal State Dominguez Hills.

REPAVIMENTACIÓN DE CALLES

El próximo viernes 12 de mayo hasta el miércoles 16 de mayo, la Oficina de Servicios Viales trabajará para repavimentar la calle 223 entre Normandie y Denker Ave. El acceso y estacionamiento de vehículos estará prohibido durante esta fase. Se colocarán señales temporales de prohibido estacionar al menos 24 horas antes del trabajo.

UN CALLEJÓN A LA VEZ

El sábado por la mañana, pasé por la limpieza del embellecimiento One Alley at a Time del Concejo Vecinal de Central San Pedro. Esta fue la segunda vez que organizaron este evento y trabajamos para limpiar las calles 12 a la 15 en las cuadras entre Mesa y Center St.

LIMPIEZA DE ARBUSTOS EXCESIVAMENTE CRECIDOS

Esta semana pudimos despejar la vegetación a lo largo del canal de control de inundaciones en Statler St. entre Amelia y Taper Ave. Los arbustos impedían la calle y la visibilidad, por lo que nuestra oficina trabajó con el Oficina de Saneamiento para abordar la situación rápidamente.

IGNITE 22

El jueves di la bienvenida a los empresarios, innovadores y futuros pensadores que se unieron para establecer contactos y explorar la industria de la economía azul con exhibiciones y demostraciones en tierra y en el agua en AltaSea para la conferencia Ignite 22. Juntos podemos asegurarnos de que el puerto funcione para las personas que viven cerca y alrededor del área y que trabajan ahí y también crear los empleos para el futuro. Gracias a todos los que están trabajando para crear una mejor economía y un futuro sostenible para nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestros nietos.

El sábado por la noche asistí a la producción teatral de Little Shop of Horrors de San Pedro High School. ¡Nuestros programas de teatro para estudiantes ofrecen actuaciones increíbles durante todo el año!

CINCO DE MAYO

¡Ahora hasta la 1 PM, el Jardín Comunitario de San Pedro está organizando una fiesta! Ubicado en la cima de la colina en 1400 N. Gaffey Street, ¡únase a nosotros esta mañana para celebrar a nuestros agricultores locales de San Pedro!

ANIVERSARIO DEL TRATADO DE PANDILLAS DE WATTS

El sábado pasado, nos reunimos en la Estación de Tren Histórica para celebrar el aniversario número 31 del Tratado de Watts Gang de 1992. Un momento en el que los vecindarios se unieron para tomar el control de su propia paz mientras trabajaban para mejorar y empoderar a la comunidad. No solo hizo de Watts un lugar mejor, sino de toda la ciudad de Los Ángeles.

PARADA DE SEGURIDAD INFANTIL

Nuestra oficina se unió a Andre Christian y los voluntarios de Watts Life Car Club para establecer una parada de seguridad para niños todos los miércoles por la mañana de 7 a 8 a.m. en la intersección de 103rd St. y Wilmington Ave. mientras los niños se dirigen a la escuela. Este servicio voluntario ayuda a crear pasajes seguros para nuestros niños y familias.

Esta semana mi oficina reunió a nuestra familia de la ciudad para planificar la Feria de Empleo de Watts el jueves 29 de junio. El evento se llevará a cabo en varios lugares, incluyendo el Campus del Instituto Infantil Watts. ¡Estén atentos para cuando lancemos este evento!

FERIA DE TRABAJO DE EMPLEO DE PRIMAVERA

HACLA Watts y LA WorkSource Center están organizando una feria de trabajo para jóvenes y adultos en el Centro de Preparación para el Empleo Maxine Waters en Watts. el 18 de mayo de 10 a.m. a 1 p.m. ¡Asegúrese de traer los documentos requeridos en el volante de arriba!

TRÁFICO CON LA REPARACIÓN DEL PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

Demasiadas calles en Wilmington ya se ven afectadas por camiones al ralentí en embotellamientos. Sin la mitigación adecuada, el cierre del Puente Vincent Thomas para reparaciones solo empeorará las cosas.

El jueves, hablé con Caltrans en la reunión de alcance del proyecto para exigir más alcance y mitigaciones en la comunidad de Wilmington, que soportará la peor parte de este proyecto a través de las propuestas de desvío de tráfico sugeridas. Haga clic para ver en Instagram y Facebook.

Gracias a la colaboración con SBCC, pudimos limpiar el callejón sin salida en East Sandison Street y, después de solicitar el servicio al 311, también reinstalamos la luz en uno de los postes. Ahora los residentes podrán estacionar sus vehículos de manera segura.

CELEBRACIÓN DE JUBILACIÓN

El viernes pasado nuestra oficina se unió a la celebración del retiro de la Sra. Irma Venegas. Un pilar de la comunidad y miembro de la Guardia Vecinal de East Wilmington Greenbelt Park, la Sra. Venegas trabajó durante 30 años para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Long Beach. Deseamos lo mejor para sus proyectos futuros y estamos agradecidos por su continuo compromiso con la comunidad de Wilmington.
