Fleet Week gives Angelenos the opportunity to thank our sea service members for the critical work they all do with a range of celebrations and events. And, this week has already been busy! |

Yesterday was the final step in the Budget process with Mayor Bass signing the 2023-24 Fiscal Year Budget to make it official! This budget balances the need to tackle the major city-wide issues like our homelessness crisis, public safety, and environmental justice while also increasing the funding for the basic city services Angelenos deserve. From funding for a One-Five designated clean up team to community projects like Mafundi in Watts or pickleball courts in Peck Park, we worked hard to ensure that the One-Five has the equitable funding we deserve. California has a goal of 75% reduction of organic waste in landfills by 2025 and to reach that we need to reduce our waste. Thank you to Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment for hosting a Zero-Waste event in the One-Five on Saturday to teach our community different ways we can be zero-waste to create a healthier future for ourselves, our kids, and our planet. |

HACLA STATE OF THE AGENCY |

On Monday I joined HACLA staff at their 2023 State of the Agency. With a little over half of HACLA’s public housing units in the One-Five, I know how crucial their agency is to the people I represent. As the City of LA continues to try to tackle our homeless crisis and with rent at increasingly unaffordable levels, that’s what makes HACLA so important. We are in this together; and, I am honored to be in this work with these public servants. |

NATIONAL MARITIME DAY |

On Monday, we again commemorated National Maritime Day, where each year on May 22nd at 11 AM, we honor the American Merchant Marine Veterans. The Merchant Mariners suffered the highest casualty rate of any service in World War II.
In the Harbor Area, we are reminded of their heroism with the "Jacob's Ladder" statue - a depiction of one shipmate attempting to save another while clinging to a Jacob’s Ladder - an image of bravery, distress, hope, and strength. And, we continue to remember these heroes by telling their stories - grateful for their bravery and the sacrifices they made. |

The Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates are holding their annual Budget Day on Saturday, June 17 from 9:30 AM to 1 PM. This will be the last Budget Day online via Zoom. This year's theme is Restart, Reform, Refocus. Following the plenary session, there will be regional breakout sessions where we will discuss City services in your neighborhood. On June 2nd and 3rd, the San Pedro City Ballet, home of American Ballet Theatre superstar Misty Copeland, is proud to present Swan Lake at The Port of Los Angeles. Performances will take place outdoors at Cabrillo Marina Berth 37 in a beautiful 400 seat outdoor performance space. Heaters will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring a wrap, blankets, and seat cushions if desired. |

CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM |

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.
To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail. |

On Saturday we came together for the inaugural Harbor City Neighborhood Council Mental Health and Resource Fair with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. We’re grateful to community leaders like Lorrie Lathrop, Chair of the HCNC Mental Health Committee who has made it her mission to make sure that the stigma of mental health is broken and that services are provided to those struggling in Harbor City and in the One-Five. It’s important to make sure you take time for your own mental health and check on your neighbors and friends to make sure they are not struggling. |

This week LA Conservation Corps started their work to repair the sidewalk on Palacios Dr. The sidewalk was cracked and damaged due to nearby trees; and, thanks to LACC, neighbors will be able to walk around safely. |

120TH ANNIVERSARY OF KOREAN IMMIGRATION |

In honor of the 120th anniversary of Korean Immigration, the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles organized a relay starting in Koreatown and concluding at the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro. Congratulations to everyone who ran/walked!
It has been 120 years since the first Koreans came to seek opportunity and a better life for themselves and their families. Today, Los Angeles is home to the largest population of ethnic Koreans residing outside the Korean Peninsula. |

I joined the San Pedro Relay for Life at Christ Lutheran Church to raise awareness for the fight against cancer last weekend. We honored and remembered our loved ones who have battled cancer and were able to raise over $76,000 dollars to go towards the American Cancer Society. We even lit up the median lights on Gaffey purple for cancer awareness! |

We also worked with LASAN to clean up an illegal dumping site on Century Blvd. |

On Tuesday evening I attended the Wilmington Neighborhood Council’s monthly meeting. It was a great opportunity to discuss and hear from residents and the NC on the major issues facing Wilmington including the Vincent Thomas Bridge renovation, traffic and road diets, and an update on the Wilmington/Harbor Gateway Interim Control Ordinance extension. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, on Thursday our office presented certificates of recognition to community leaders who advocate for the well being of the Wilmington community during the Wilmington Mental Health Resource Fair. El lunes acompañé al personal de HACLA en su Estado de la Agencia 2023. Con un poco más de la mitad de las unidades de vivienda pública de HACLA en el One-Five, sé cuán crucial es su agencia para las personas que represento. A medida que la Ciudad de Los Ángeles continúa tratando de abordar nuestra crisis de personas sin hogar y con alquileres a niveles cada vez más inasequibles, eso es lo que hace que HACLA sea tan importante. Estamos en esto juntos; y me siento honrado de estar en este trabajo con estos servidores públicos. |

DÍA MARÍTIMO NACIONAL |
|
El lunes, nuevamente conmemoramos el Día Marítimo Nacional, donde cada año, el 22 de mayo a las 11 a. m., honramos a los Veteranos de la Marina Mercante Estadounidense. Los marineros mercantes sufrieron la tasa de bajas más alta de cualquier servicio en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
En el área del puerto, recordamos su heroísmo con la estatua de la "Jacob’s ladder” (Escalera de Jacob), una representación de un compañero de barco que intenta salvar a otro mientras se aferra a una escalera de Jacob, una imagen de valentía, angustia, esperanza y fuerza. Y seguimos recordando a estos héroes contando sus historias, agradecidos por su valentía y los sacrificios que hicieron. |

El programa de reciclaje de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, OrganicsLA, se encarga de mantener los desechos orgánicos fuera de los vertederos y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.
El proyecto de ley SB 1383 requiere que todas las jurisdicciones del estado brinden un servicio de recolección de desechos orgánicos. Ahora se les pide a los residentes que coloquen los restos de comida y papel sucio con alimentos junto con los desechos del jardín en el contenedor verde.

Estamos agradecidos con los líderes de la comunidad como Lorrie Lathrop, presidenta del Comité de Salud Mental de HCNC, quien se ha propuesto como misión asegurarse de que se rompa el estigma de la salud mental y que se brinden servicios a quienes luchan en Harbor City y el One-Five. Me uní al Relevo por la Vida de San Pedro en la Iglesia Luterana de Cristo para crear conciencia sobre la lucha contra el cáncer. El Consejo Asesor de Residentes (RAC, por sus siglas en inglés) de Jordan Downs se creó para dar a los residentes de viviendas públicas de Jordan Downs el derecho a organizarse y elegir un consejo de residentes que represente sus intereses. Esta semana asistimos a la Ceremonia de Instalación del RAC y reconocimos a las increíbles mujeres del Consejo Asesor de Residentes saliente por su trabajo durante los últimos 3 años. |

El martes por la noche asistí a la reunión mensual del Consejo Vecinal de Wilmington. Fue una gran oportunidad para discutir y escuchar a los residentes y al Consejo acerca de los principales problemas que enfrenta Wilmington, incluyendo la renovación del puente Vincent Thomas, la ruta de bicicletas y carreteras, y una actualización sobre la extensión de la Ordenanza de control provisional de Wilmington/Harbor Gateway. Gracias por la cálida bienvenida a su reunión. |

FERIA DE RECURSOS DE SALUD MENTAL |

En honor al Mes de Concientización sobre la Salud Mental, el jueves nuestra oficina entregó certificados de reconocimiento a los líderes comunitarios que abogan por el bienestar de la comunidad de Wilmington durante la Feria de Recursos de Salud Mental de Wilmington.
