May 19, 2023

It’s a wrap! Thank you to ALL of the schools, students, artists, parents, faculty, and community members who made the Making Movies That Matter Film Festival a reality and a success once again. This film festival aims to promote the arts, build collaboration, and most importantly give participating students an outlet to creatively express themselves on issues important to them.

It is truly my honor to support the next generation of leaders and help them pursue their dreams in a real and meaningful way.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
CD12's Pioneer Woman of the Year
Josie Casarrubias

Today the City of Los Angeles held the 33rd Annual Pioneer Women Awards organized by the LA Civil Rights Department and the Commission on the Status of Women. This year’s theme focused on honoring the amazing women across our city doing the daily work of helping to solve the homelessness crisis.

For her tireless efforts in helping families in our community overcome homelessness, I was proud to honor Josie Casarrubias as Council District 12’s 2023 Pioneer Woman.

Josie Casarrubias is the Program Manager at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission (SFVRM). An outreach ministry of the Rescue Mission Alliance, the SFVRM provides safe, supportive housing and guidance for families at two Northridge locations: Home Again, which offers families the opportunity to recover from homelessness by meeting basic needs while establishing a plan of restoration and independence; and Renewed Hope, a men’s residential life recovery program that focuses on defeating addiction and restoring hope.

Josie was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She has always been passionate about caring for and helping people, a quality which has shaped her professional work. After working to help homeless families, youth, and immigrant populations in her previous career roles, Josie joined the SFVRM team three years ago. She entered her position in the early months of the pandemic, stepping into a critical role during a time of uncertainty. Throughout her time, she has worked tirelessly to further develop programs at both Home Again and Renewed Hope with a focus on equipping families and individuals with employment paths, educational opportunities, and critical life skills. Josie uses lessons from the personal challenges she has overcome to love and serve the families at the mission, and one of the most fulfilling parts of her work is to see families reunified, stronger, and ready to face life once again after their stay.

Josie has been happily married for 24 years and has five beautiful children. She has served as a strong faith-based leader in her church and local community for the past 15 years. Displaying a heart of leadership, positivity, kindness, and service, Josie considers her role at the mission and in her community not a job, but her calling.

We are so grateful to Josie for her care and compassionate work. She is part of a dedicated team of people at the SFVRM who work day in and day out to ensure that families and individuals receive the care, love, and support they need at some of their most difficult times. Learn more about the life-changing work happening at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission here.
