Your 2023/24 City Budget

This week, we wrapped up six weeks of public hearings to deliver your 2023/24 City budget. Los Angeles is making historic investments in homelessness, housing, infrastructure, and City services. We are supporting our public safety partners at LAFD and LAPD with expanded hiring and essential equipment. Although no budget is ever perfect, I consider this one a win for our city and our council district!

Although I do not have a seat on the Budget, Finance & Innovation Committee, your CD11 team attended every budget hearing for every City department, and we advocated tirelessly for projects and resources needed in the city and across the district.

Here is a look at a few of the important items moving forward:

My comments about the budget on the council floor.
Curbing Van Lords

This week, I introduced a motion to strengthen regulations on RV sales and leasing on our public streets. Thousands of people live in RVs across the city, many of which have been rented out by unscrupulous ‘van lords’ without regard to the habitability, safety of occupants, or operability of the vehicles. Van lords often ‘service’ these vehicles by dumping sewage and gray water into our storm drains.

My motion requires all RV lessors to comply with federal and state laws related to design, safety, and fire standards, in addition to checking for proper licensing.

This will not solve vehicular homelessness, but it represents a commonsense approach to ensure that our most vulnerable populations are protected.

       A Monumental Gesture
This week in the City Council, we unanimously voted to establish a Republic of Artsakh Square at the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in the 11th District. This decision symbolizes our solidarity with, and commitment to, the people of Artsakh. The square will serve as a beacon of Artsakh's self-determination and will represent our firm stance against the unwarranted aggression from the Azerbaijani dictatorship aimed at eradicating Armenian history and culture.
