NATIONAL NURSES WEEK

On Friday we celebrated National Nurses Week in Council Chambers. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

This time provides the perfect opportunities to celebrate nurses who care for us, our friends, our families and our communities. They do important work and we can show them how much we value them by expressing our appreciation. In Council we honored Charmaine Morales who grew up in the One-Five and is registered nurse at Kaiser Permanente, along with other nurses from United Nurses of California.

RANCHO LPG

Rancho LPG is a butane and propane storage facility located adjacent to the residential area of San Pedro. The facility is regulated by at least 9 local, state and federal agencies, a bureaucratic headache. Recently, photos of a water basin on site have shown varying levels of water in it, leading to questions of how this impacts their operational capacity. Should the basin become polluted, the release of this contaminated water could impact local water infrastructure. This Wednesday I introduced a motion to report on the regulating authority for the water basin when it comes to the operations of the Rancho LPG site and its potential water contamination.

LAFD FIRE SERVICE DAY

TODAY! Now until 2 PM, head over to 444 South Harbor Blvd in San Pedro to Fire Station 112 for LAFD Fire Service Day. Great for kids and families there will be station tours, the fire engine, water display tools and equipment demonstrations.

HEALING LUNCHEON

Mother’s Day is hard for those who have lost a mom or mother-figure, but it’s especially difficult for mothers who have lost a child. On Saturday morning, I joined Loving Hands Community Care for their 16th annual Healing Luncheon for mothers who have lost children. Loving Hands provides a space for mothers who have experienced the unimaginable to grieve, heal, and support one another.

LASAN OPEN HOUSE

Next weekend in the Harbor District Yard at 1400 N. Gaffey, join us for LA Sanitation and Environment’s Open House. This Zero Waste Event is free so bring the family and learn more about LASAN’s programs and services.

FREE BULKY ITEM DROP-OFF

From 8 AM - 4:30 PM on May 13th LA SAN will offer Bulky Item Drop-Offs for LA Residents at the Harbor District Yard. They are accepting items such as box springs, carpets, and sofas. See flyer above for more information. Proof of residency is required including your most current LADWP bill and your identification card.

PLASTIC WASTE REDUCTION

The City is considering the development of a citywide Comprehensive Plastics Reduction Program. LASAN would like to hear your thoughts on the proposed program and how the City of Los Angeles can reduce plastic waste. For more information, please visit their website.

SMALL BUSINESS RENTAL ASSISTANCE

Applications are NOW OPEN for ROUND 3 of the City of Los Angeles Small Business Rental Assistance Grant Program. Grants of $2,500 up to $15,000 will be available to eligible businesses that need financial assistance to aid in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses must be located within the City of Los Angeles and use the grants to cover some or all of any outstanding location rental fees. The grant may be used for payments due that incurred on or after March 1, 2020 through April 30, 2023. Applications are due May 24, 2023. See here for more information.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The South East Los Angeles Youth Opportunity (Yo!) Watts YouthSource Center is a youth/young adult-focused resource working to improve educational and employment opportunities for 14-24 year old South Los Angeles residents who are unemployed, out of school and/or facing additional barriers to employment, secondary & postsecondary education.

Currently, the Yo! Watts YouthSource Center has paid summer jobs available for youth and young adults between 14-24 years old. Earn over $2,500 this summer working 160 hours of paid work at $16.04 an hour.

CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

SIDEWALK REPAIR

This week Urban Forestry prepared the area for StreetsLA to replace a damaged sidewalk in the Narbonne area of Harbor City. If there is a sidewalk in need of repair you can call it in to 311 or report it on the MyLA311 app.

GOLDEN APPLE AWARDS

On Friday our office presented certificates to the educators who won the 2023 Golden Apple Awards. The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership recognizes our teacher’s contributions to building a stronger, better-educated society.

CLEAN UP

Join us May 27th from 8 AM - 1 PM as we clean our streets and alleyways around Harbor City. We’re partnering with the Gang Alternatives Program and the Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce. See you there!

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Wednesday evening, I attended and presented at the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council Meeting. It was a great opportunity to discuss the city budget, issues facing the community, and to give updates on upcoming projects in the area. The next meeting will be at Halldale Elementary School at 6:30 PM on Thursday, June 8th.

UNDERPASS LIGHTING

The Bureau of Street Lighting has been working to restore nonfunctional lighting on the 110 Freeway Underpass. This week they were out on Gardena Blvd. and we’re happy to report that the lighting has been restored. Please continue to report lighting, illegal dumping, and other issues to 311.

STREET RESURFACING

On Tuesday, May 16th through Thursday, May 18th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave 116th St. between Towne Ave. and San Pedro St. Vehicle access and parking will be prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

SAN PEDRO FISH MARKET

The San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant is back on the waterfront at the Landing! Just a few hundred yards north of the former Ports O’Call location, head over to 1150 S. Harbor Blvd. and enjoy the World Famous Shrimp Tray with friends and family by the water. And, they've made it even easier to order quickly from the table using a unique QR code. See you there!

100 YEARS OF TEMPLE BETH EL

On Saturday we celebrated Temple Beth El’s 100 Year Anniversary. Temple Beth El is one of the oldest Reform Jewish congregations in the Los Angeles area. Their focus is on warmth and friendship, caring and acceptance without judging others. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, marital status, or sexual orientation.

DIVINE HUG

On Sunday we cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Divine Hug. Divine Hug is a non-profit that will provide youth from underrepresented areas with work experience, training, and mentorships in retail, wholesale, and design. They invite ages 14-24 a chance to learn the industry through a paid internship. A special congratulations and thank you to Rosie Arias for doing the work of uplifting the youth in our community!

CINCO DE MAYO FIESTA

On Saturday, I joined the San Pedro Community Garden for their Cinco de Mayo Fiesta! This is the largest community garden in Los Angeles occupying 6 parcels of city-owned land with 231 family plots and several community plots. Community gardens are a great opportunity to give back to nature, work the soil, and uplift our community by creating food, activity and health for everyone.

CICLAMINI

Join us on Sunday, May 21 (rain or shine!), as Metro transforms Watts into a public park for the day. Jog, ride, bike, skate, run, walk, skateboard, and enjoy the route however you want. A CicLAmini is a more pedestrian-oriented experience featuring activities sprinkled along the 1 mile open street event.

MOTHER’S DAY MEETING

The Sisters of Watts held their monthly meeting this week at the Starbucks community room in Freedom Plaza and my wife Connie joined in attendance! These incredible women were honored a few days early for Mother’s Day and they all received gift baskets for their work.

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Tuesday evening I attended the first scheduled in-person Watts Neighborhood Council following the recent election. While we were unable to assemble a quorum, we made the best of it with a great discussion of the Neighborhood Council system and various community issues! It was an incredibly informative session for myself, the new board members, and the community in attendance.

I'm looking forward to swearing in the new Watts Neighborhood Council Boardmembers and working together to uplift Watts and the entire One-Five!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PASTOR CLARK

On Sunday we came together in celebration of Pastor Maudine Clark of Morning Star Baptist Church for her 85th birthday! It was an incredibly special occasion full of family, friends, community leaders at the Watts Senior Center.

SPRING INTO EMPLOYMENT JOB FAIR

HACLA Watts and the LA WorkSource Center are hosting a job fair for youth and adults at the Maxine Waters Employment Prep Center in Watts. May 18th from 10 AM - 1 PM make sure to bring the required documents in the flyer above!

CINCO DE MAYO

On Saturday afternoon we joined Avalon Arts & Cultural Alliance at the Wilmington Town Square to celebrate Wilmington Art Walk’s Cinco De Mayo! It was a great turnout of local vendors, artists and community members!

ILLEGAL DUMPING

This week we worked with LASAN to clean an illegal dumping site on Pacific Coast Highway and Alameda St. If you come across illegal dumping in your area you can report it to 311 or call our office and let us know!

MOTHER’S TEA TIME

On Wednesday, our office joined the Wilmington Community Resource Center for Mother’s Tea Time. It was a great time to celebrate Wilmington moms in honor of Mother’s Day.

ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

Friday morning I met with Fire Captain Brett Klemme from Fire Station 38 and representatives from LA Watershed and LA Sanitation to work on a plan to address the situation on Alameda and PCH which is becoming an environmental hazard.

BANNING POOL SWIM LESSONS

The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks is offering free swimming lessons for children 3-17 years of age. See above for session dates and times. Scan the QR code on the flyer or click here (swimla.org) to register.

SEMANA NACIONAL DE LAS ENFERMERAS

El viernes celebramos la Semana Nacional de Enfermeras en el Ayuntamiento. La Semana Nacional de las Enfermeras comienza cada año el 6 de mayo y finaliza el 12 de mayo, el cumpleaños de Florence Nightingale.

Esta época brinda las oportunidades perfectas para celebrar a las enfermeras que nos cuidan a nosotros, a nuestros amigos, a nuestras familias y a nuestras comunidades. Hacen un trabajo importante y podemos mostrarles cuánto los valoramos expresándoles nuestro aprecio. En el ayuntamiento, honramos a Charmaine Morales quien creció en One-Five y es enfermera registrada en Kaiser Permanente junto con otras enfermeras de United Nurses of California.

RANCHO LPG

Rancho LPG es una instalación de almacenamiento de butano y propano ubicada junto al área residencial de San Pedro. La instalación está regulada por al menos 9 agencias locales, estatales y federales, un dolor de cabeza burocrático. Recientemente, las fotos de una cuenca de agua en el sitio han mostrado diferentes niveles de agua, lo que genera preguntas sobre cómo esto afecta su capacidad operativa. Si la cuenca se contamina, la liberación de esta agua contaminada podría afectar la infraestructura de agua local. Este miércoles presenté una moción para informar sobre la autoridad reguladora de la cuenca hidrográfica en lo que respecta a las operaciones del sitio Rancho LPG y su posible contaminación del agua.

DÍA DEL SERVICIO DE BOMBEROS DE LAFD

¡HOY! Desde ahora y hasta las 2 p. m., llegue al 444 South Harbor Blvd en San Pedro a la Estación de Bomberos 112 para el Día del Servicio de Bomberos del LAFD. Este es un evento ideal para niños y familias. Habrá recorridos por la estación, el camión de bomberos, herramientas de exhibición de agua y demostraciones de equipos.

ALMUERZO Y SANACIÓN

El Día de la Madre es muy difícil para quienes han perdido a una madre o una figura materna, pero es especialmente difícil para las madres que han perdido a un hijo. El sábado por la mañana, me uní a Loving Hands Community Care para su Almuerzo de Sanación anual en su decimosexta edición para madres que han perdido a sus hijos. Loving Hands brinda un espacio para las madres que han experimentado lo inimaginable para llorar, sanar y apoyarse mutuamente.

JORNADA DE PUERTAS ABIERTAS DE LASAN

PROGRAMA DE PASANTÍAS DE VERANO

El Centro Watts YouthSource de Oportunidades para la Juventud (YO) del Sureste de Los Ángeles es un centro para jóvenes/adultos jóvenes que trabaja para mejorar las oportunidades educativas y de empleo para jóvenes/adultos jóvenes del sur de Los Ángeles de 14 a 24 años que están desempleados, fuera de la escuela y/o enfrentando barreras adicionales para el empleo, la educación secundaria y postsecundaria.

OPORTUNIDADES DE TRABAJO EN SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS ESTE VERANO

PROGRAMA DE RECICLAJE DE PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS EN LA ACERA

El programa de reciclaje de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, OrganicsLA, se encarga de mantener los desechos orgánicos fuera de los vertederos y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.

La próxima reunión será en la Escuela Primaria Halldale a las 6:30 p. m. el jueves 8 de junio.

ILUMINACIÓN DE PASO SUBTERRÁNEO

La Oficina de Alumbrado Público ha estado trabajando para restaurar la iluminación en el paso subterráneo de la autopista 110. Esta semana estuvieron en Gardena Blvd. y nos complace informar que la iluminación ha sido restaurada. Continúe reportando problemas de iluminación, vertidos ilegales y otros problemas al 311.

PAVIMENTACIÓN DE CALLES

Del martes 16 de mayo al jueves 18 de mayo, la Oficina de Servicios Viales trabajará para repavimentar la calle 116 entre la avenida Towne y la calle San Pedro. El acceso y estacionamiento de vehículos estará prohibido durante esta fase. Se colocarán señales temporales de prohibido estacionar al menos 24 horas antes del trabajo.

ABRAZO DIVINO

El domingo cortamos la cinta para la gran inauguración de Divine Hug. Invitan a jóvenes de 14 a 24 años a tener la oportunidad de aprender la industria a través de una pasantía remunerada. ¡Una felicitación especial y gracias a Rosie Arias por animar a los jóvenes de nuestra comunidad!

FIESTA DEL CINCO DE MAYO

¡El sábado, acompañé al Jardín Comunitario de San Pedro para su Fiesta del Cinco de Mayo! Este es el jardín comunitario más grande de Los Ángeles y ocupa 6 parcelas de terreno municipal con 231 parcelas familiares y varias parcelas comunitarias. Los jardines comunitarios son una gran oportunidad para retribuir a la naturaleza, trabajar la tierra y mejorar nuestra comunidad creando alimentos, actividad y salud para todos.

CICLAMINI

Acompanenos el domingo 21 de mayo (¡llueva o truene!), mientras Metro transforma Watts en un parque público por un día. Ya sea trotando, en bicicleta, patineta o patines, corriendo o caminando disfruten de la ruta. Un CicLAmini es una experiencia más orientada a los peatones que presenta actividades esparcidas a lo largo el evento de calle abierta de 1 millas.

REUNIÓN DÍA DE LA MADRE

¡Las Hermanas de Watts celebraron su reunión mensual esta semana en el salón comunitario de Starbucks en Freedom Plaza y mi esposa Connie las acompañó! Estas increíbles mujeres fueron honradas unos días antes del Día de la Madre y todas recibieron canastas de regalo por su trabajo.

JUNTA VECINAL

El martes por la noche asistí al primer Concejo Vecinal de Watts en persona programado después de las recientes elecciones. Si bien lamentablemente no pudimos reunir un quórum, aprovechamos el tiempo al máximo con una gran discusión sobre el sistema de Consejos Vecinales y varios problemas de la comunidad. Fue una sesión increíblemente informativa para mí, los nuevos miembros de la junta y la comunidad que asistió.

¡Espero jurar en la nueva Junta del Concejo Vecinal de Watts y trabajar juntos para elevar a Watts y todo el One-Five!

FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS PASTORA CLARK

¡El domingo nos reunimos para celebrar a la pastora Maudine Clark de la Iglesia Bautista Morning Star por sus 85 años! Fue una ocasión increíblemente especial llena de familiares, amigos y líderes comunitarios en el Watts Senior Center.

LA HORA DEL TÉ PARA LAS MADRES

El miércoles, nuestra oficina se unió al Centro de Recursos Comunitarios de Wilmington para La Hora del Té para Las Madres. Fue un gran momento para celebrar a las mamás de Wilmington en honor al Día de la Madre.

ABORDANDO LOS PELIGROS AMBIENTALES

El viernes por la mañana me reuní con el Capitán Brett Klemme de la Estación de Bomberos 38 y representantes de LA Watershed y LA Sanitation para trabajar en un plan para abordar la situación en Alameda y PCH, que se está convirtiendo en un peligro ambiental.
