Throughout the One-Five, report cards are being finalized (good luck!), yearbooks are being signed, and tassels are being moved from right to left. Students from pre-K through college are finishing up their school year and looking forward to summer vacation and the new year. I want to take this time to congratulate all the graduates of the Class of 2023.

Graduation Day is a time to celebrate your achievements and look forward to the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Dedication, resilience and determination have brought you to this point.

As you embark on your next chapter, don’t forget about your community. Your community has nurtured and supported you throughout this journey, so continue to be active and engaged and leave a positive mark for generations to come.

To the parents and teachers, your strength and support has been crucial to our students’ success. Thank you for the carpools, the late night dinners, and helping with homework.

RANCHO LPG UPDATE

Rancho LPG is a butane and propane storage facility within 1,200 ft. of pre-existing homes, schools, practically on "top" of two major traffic corridors. The facility is regulated by at least 9 local, state and federal agencies.

This week, the Council passed my motion asking for a report on the regulating authority for the water basin when it comes to the operations of the Rancho LPG site and its potential water contamination. With so many different jurisdictions overseeing this site, it’s an incredibly difficult issue to take on headfirst. But, I’m here to do my part as the Councilmember for the Harbor Area to begin cutting through the red tape and address this issue.

WORLD OCEANS DAY

Thursday was World Oceans Day and I joined AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles to break ground on their Center of Innovation renovation which will house the West Coast’s largest blue economy ocean research and development center. This is an opportunity for us in the Harbor and beyond to explore and protect the future of our planet while preserving good jobs and creating new, sustainable jobs.

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

While I continue to have significant concerns about the air quality and traffic impacts the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project will bring to the residents of Wilmington and throughout the Harbor Area, I am pleased to share that CalTrans accepted a number of our requests, including:

✅ Extending the public comment period to July 10, 2023
✅ Establishing a project-specific Community Advisory Committee to provide feedback for the project throughout the process.

We will continue to advocate for mitigation funding to be used by the City for expanded community outreach, road repairs, and a comprehensive construction impact program throughout the communities that will be burdened with additional truck and car volumes.

JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth is one of the most important anniversaries in our nation's history. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, who had fought for the Union, led a force of soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver a message that the Civil War was finally over, the Union had won, and those enslaved would be free. ANIMAL SHELTER

This week I visited the LA City Harbor Animal Shelter to discuss the current issues they’re facing and learn more about the services they offer. Animal Shelters fill up during the Fourth of July fireworks season and they are already overcrowded as it is. We need your help! CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN UP

Thanks to our Gang Awareness Prevention (GAP) program, we were able to clean the area of 257th St. and Pacific Coast Highway last week. Thank you GAP for consistently working to keep the One-Five clean and green!

This week, thanks to coordination with CalTrans, the 110 freeway easement along Alondra Blvd. was cleared and cleaned!

HARBOR GATEWAY COMMUNITY PLAN

Los Angeles City Planning is in the process of updating the City’s 35 Community Plans, which guide policy and land use in Los Angeles’s neighborhoods. This week our staff met with the City’s Planning Department to visit sites and discuss the Harbor Gateway Community Plan Update.

BRING IT ON THE BLVD.

This past weekend, our team participated in the City of Gardena’s Bring It on the Boulevard street fair. As neighboring communities, it’s important that we come together to deliver resources for our residents.

BRUSH CLEARING

Our office is working with the Department of Recreation and Parks to clear overgrown brush due to the record rainfall we received this year. We have already completed the work in Peck Park and Bandini Canyon Park and will be working on Leland Park next. You can request brush clearing by using the 311 app.

LITTLE ITALY RUN

We were up bright and early on Sunday morning for ItalyRunLA, a 5K race on the LA Waterfront to celebrate National Italian Day. Thank you to the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association for organizing and promoting the race, and congratulations to everyone who ran & walked the course. It was especially wonderful to welcome the new Consul General of Italy to this annual event!

SWAN LAKE AT THE PORT

Last weekend the San Pedro City Ballet, home of American Ballet Theatre superstar Misty Copeland, presented Swan Lake at The Port of Los Angeles. Thank you to all the students, instructors, and volunteers and the San Pedro Ballet school for putting on this and all the wonderful performances throughout the year.

GIRLS AND BOYS ROC

We build a strong, safer, healthier community by coming together with people we may not know across neighborhoods to share our experiences and hopes.

Girls & Boys ROC (Regardless of Color) brings together youth from Imperial Courts, Jordan Downs, and Nickerson Gardens for intensive, immersive activities and social-emotional support. ROC is a program that works to build bridges and friendship with one another to uplift our whole community. Congratulations to all the young women and men who completed the Spring ‘23 program - your dedication to uniting and strengthening our community is inspiring.

ST. JOHN’S METHODIST CHURCH

On Monday I visited the St. John's United Methodist Church in Watts, a pillar in the community for nearly 100 years, with Neighborhood Councilmember Storm Hopkins to survey the damage from this weekend's fire. This is the second time this church has experienced a fire in a little over a year. I'm grateful for LAFD's quick response to extinguish the flames in 20 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and our Watts community deserves this church to be returned to its former glory.

SUMMER KICK OFF

The sun is out and it’s starting to almost feel like summer so it was the perfect opportunity to jump in the bounce house, play double dutch, and eat some snow cones! Thanks to the Sisters of Watts, Beating Cancer, Unlimited CPR, and Liddo Grannies Touch for organizing this Summer Kick Off for our families in Watts! Special shout out to Lend a Ear, Autism Doesn't Define Me, KIPP, Children's Institute and Soledad Enrichment for their collaboration to make it such a great event!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COMMISSIONER HOOPER

Commissioner Lucelia Hooper has been a resident of Nickerson Gardens for over thirty years and is a pillar in the Watts community. Since 1989 she has been involved in a variety of programs at the site, including the management and operations of the food bank, the Nickerson Gardens Safe Passage Program for Markham Middle School, as well as a Youth Council mentor. Last Friday, family, neighbors, and HACLA staff celebrated Commissioner Hooper’s 80th birthday together, as well as honored her decades-long career of serving the community.

Last Saturday we held the closing ceremony for the 2023 John Mendez Pony Baseball Spring Season! Since March our Wilmington community has come out to cheer on over 200 players ages 3-14 who participated in these games. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and families for a great season!

ACTUALIZACIÓN DE RANCHO LPG

Rancho LPG es una instalación de almacenamiento de butano y propano dentro de los 1,200 pies de casas preexistentes, escuelas, prácticamente en la "cima" de dos corredores principales de tráfico. La instalación está regulada por al menos 9 agencias locales, estatales y federales.

Esta semana, el Concejo aprobó mi moción solicitando un informe sobre la autoridad reguladora de la cuenca hidrográfica en lo que respecta a las operaciones del sitio Rancho LPG y su posible contaminación del agua. Con tantas jurisdicciones diferentes supervisando este sitio, es un problema increíblemente difícil de abordar. Pero estoy aquí para hacer mi parte como Concejal del Área del Puerto para comenzar a eliminar la burocracia y abordar este problema.

DÍA MUNDIAL DE LOS OCÉANOS

El jueves fue el Día Mundial De Los Océanos y me uní a AltaSea en el Puerto de Los Ángeles para iniciar la renovación de su Centro de Innovación, que albergará el centro de investigación y desarrollo oceánico de economía azul más grande de la costa oeste. PROGRAMA DE RECICLAJE DE PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS EN LA ACERA

CARRERA DE LITTLE ITALY

El domingo por la mañana nos levantamos muy temprano para ItalyRunLA, una carrera de 5 km en LA Waterfront para celebrar el Día Nacional de Italia. Gracias a la Asociación Little Italy de Los Ángeles por organizar y promover la carrera, y felicitaciones a todos los que corrieron y caminaron en la carrera. ¡Fue especialmente maravilloso dar la bienvenida a la nueva Cónsul General de Italia a este evento anual!

LAGO DE LOS CISNES EN EL PUERTO

El fin de semana pasado, el San Pedro City Ballet, hogar de la superestrella del American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland, presentó Swan Lake en el Puerto de Los Ángeles. IGLESIA METODISTA ST JOHN’S

El lunes visité la Iglesia Metodista Unida St. John’s en Watts, un pilar en la comunidad durante casi 100 años, con el concejal del vecindario Storm Hopkins para evaluar los daños causados por el incendio del fin de semana. Esta es la segunda vez que esta iglesia experimenta un incendio en poco más de un año. Estoy agradecido por la rápida respuesta de LAFD para extinguir las llamas en 20 minutos. La causa del incendio sigue bajo investigación y nuestra comunidad de Watts merece que esta iglesia regrese a su antigua gloria.

FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS COMISIONADO HOOPER

La comisionada Lucelia Hooper ha sido residente de Nickerson Gardens durante más de treinta años y es un pilar en la comunidad de Watts. Desde 1989, ha estado involucrada en una variedad de programas en el sitio, incluyendo la administración y las operaciones del banco de alimentos, el Programa de Camino Seguro de Nickerson Gardens para la Escuela Intermedia Markham, y como mentora del Consejo Juvenil.
