Thursday marked the start of Pride Month, a time to celebrate and embrace our LGBTQ+ community throughout the One-Five and Los Angeles.

This year over 400 pieces of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation have been introduced across the country. We're witnessing an attack nationwide on the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans, trans and non-binary communities in particular. This Pride Month, it's more important than ever that we show up, listen, and stand with our LGBTQ+ neighbors.

I hope you’ll join us in the Pride Celebrations throughout this month. We’ll be celebrating Pride on the One-Five Waterfront on June 17th at the Port of Los Angeles!

It will have a line-up of new and exciting festivities, including a drag brunch at noon and a 2 p.m. flag-raising ceremony at the LA Maritime Museum. Come show your support for the LGBTQ+ community. See you there!

PROGRESS PRIDE FLAG AT CITY BUILDINGS

Flying the Progress Pride flag shows our support for the LGBTQ+ communities. Yesterday I introduced a motion to allow for the Progress Pride Flag to be raised in the Civic Center and at other City facilities where the American, Californian and City flags are displayed during June. The City of Los Angeles should demonstrate this commitment for greater inclusivity and celebration of all people.

INSIDE SAFE

Over the past several weeks, outreach workers have been building relationships and trust with people living in two of our largest encampments in the Harbor Area. Since Wednesday, it is estimated we have enabled over 60 people to move out of these encampments and indoors.

Together we were able to bring the resources of the City, the County, and the expertise of service providers like Harbor Interfaith, to bring our neighbors indoors with urgency.

Our work is not done here. We are committed to providing these individuals the services and support they need to stay housed.

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

Last week I wrote a letter to CalTrans to provide comments and recommendations on the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project.

While I continue to have significant concerns about the air quality and traffic impacts this project will bring to the residents of Wilmington and throughout the Harbor Area, I am pleased to share that CalTrans accepted a number of our requests,  including:
✅ Extending the public comment period to July 10, 2023
✅ Establishing a project-specific Community Advisory Committee to provide feedback for the project throughout the process.

We will continue to advocate for mitigation funding to be used by the City for expanded community outreach, road repairs, and a comprehensive construction impact program throughout the communities that will be burdened with additional truck and car volumes.

FLEET WEEK

From Welcome Parties to boat tours and Galley Wars, last weekend was an unforgettable Fleet Week celebration! Our community came out to enjoy the festivities and support our service members as we showed them just what the One-Five has to offer!

AANHPI HERITAGE MONTH

Wednesday marked the end of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the contributions that the AANH & PI community members have made in shaping the One-Five and Los Angeles.

Among the celebrations in the district, we were honored to host the 120th anniversary of Korean Immigration, a relay starting in Koreatown and concluding at the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro.

Beyond this month, we will continue to uplift their stories and commit to standing with our AANH & PI neighbors. Check out the video here!

CROATIAN CULTURE WEEK

Last week we came together to celebrate the inaugural Croatian Culture Week, culminating with an incredible Croatian Independence Street Party! I want to thank Consul General Renee Pea for her leadership and Jack Baric for bringing together the Croatian community in the Harbor Area and beyond for the various events. Looking forward to next year’s Croatian Culture Week already!

CITY CAREER FAIR

Mark your calendar! The LA City Department of Public Works will be in Watts on June 29  for a Career Fair, and we're bringing more City partners! From Recreation and Parks to Transportation, LAPD, LAFD and more - come and check out the jobs the City has to offer!

COLLEGE BOUND

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor College Bound program was founded in 2002 with only 30 high school students participating. This year, the College Bound program is in 15 sites across the LA Harbor area, serving over 2,000 high school kids.  On Wednesday, I was honored to speak at their graduation to celebrate the 647 seniors graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships awarded. Thank you to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor for your dedication to the One-Five's youth.

HARBOR DEPARTMENT YARD

One of my first jobs as a youth was as a student worker in the construction division at the Harbor Department Yard in the 1980s. On Wednesday morning, I went back to visit these dedicated city employees - from the maintenance workers to the gardeners - who work tirelessly to keep the Harbor and the Waterfront beautiful and operational!

Some of the most popular City services can be requested by calling 311 or (213) 473-3231, visiting myla311.lacity.org, or using the MyLA311 mobile app. These services include graffiti removal, pothole repair, and bulky-item pickup.

CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

On Saturday, we came together to clean up illegal dumping in the alleys near Normont Elementary. Thanks to GAP, the Harbor Gateway Chamber, and the Office of Beautification for partnering with us and a special thanks to the community members who came out on a weekend morning to help keep the One-Five clean!

Next Saturday join us at the Harbor City Recreation Center for the ribbon cutting and ice cream social at the new Harbor City playground! We will have music, folklórico dancers, and a chalk art zone! See you there!

STOP SIGNS INSTALLED

This week, with the help of the LA Department of Transportation, we installed stop signs on 259th St. and Frampton Ave. to help reduce speeding in the area.

PLANNING UPDATE

Our team joined the Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council Planning and Land Use Committee last week to discuss issues and projects coming up in Harbor Gateway North.

CLEAN UP

This week LADWP cleared a nuisance lot on 118th Street. We will continue to monitor this location so that our community stays clean!

FIRST THURSDAY ART WALK

On Thursday I attended the monthly First Thursday Art Walk. It’s always a great opportunity to visit our local shops, check out the art, and be together with the Harbor community.

SOUTH SHORES PRESENTS: THE JUNGLE BOOK

On Tuesday evening, I attended the South Shores Magnet School for the Visual & Performing Arts’ production of the Jungle Book. From the acting to the songs (Bare Necessities was a hit!) let me tell you, these LAUSD students put on an incredible performance! Thank you to Principal Suzuki for having me.

LITTLE ITALY RUN

In celebration of National Italian Day, the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association will be hosting ItalyRunLA. Join us TOMORROW  on the corner of Harbor Blvd. and 6th St as we run (or walk!) this 5K course. You can use MCOSKER15 for a $15 discount, see more information in the flyer above.

JORDAN DOWNS PARK DESIGN

This weekend the community of Jordan Downs came together to provide feedback on park renditions for the children’s park. The community was able to see renderings of conceptual ideas for the park that will be constructed.

YOUTH POP UP

This weekend our team attended the Children’s Institute Youth Pop up to go over talking points that they would be presenting on their trip to City Hall this month. Through this exercise, they were able to engage in an open conversation to discuss their biggest concerns in the community.

SIDEWALK REPAIR

The Bureau of Street Services’ Construction Services Division will be installing a new sidewalk on 737 E. Imperial Hwy. starting the week of June 5th, 2023. Temporary no parking signs may be posted, and a lane may be closed at times to help facilitate construction.

MEMORIAL DAY

On Memorial Day, we honored our fallen soldiers at the Wilmington Cemetery, the second oldest cemetery in the City of Los Angeles. It is poignant and moving that we have service members from every American conflict since the Mexican-American War interned at this historic cemetery. We’re eternally grateful for the service and sacrifice of each generation represented here.

ALLEY CLEAN UP

Thank you SBCC for cleaning up the alley near L St. and Wilmington Blvd. on Tuesday! We were able to remove large bulky items and debris to clear the right of way.

KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION

Congratulations to the students from Harry Bridges Span School who graduated from Transitional Kindergarten yesterday! A special recognition to their teacher, Ms. Celia Mora for 25 years of teaching.

El jueves marcó el comienzo del Mes del Orgullo, un momento para celebrar y abrazar a nuestra comunidad LGBTQ+ en el One-Five y Los Ángeles.

Este año se han introducido más de 400 leyes anti-LGBTQ+ en todo el país. Estamos siendo testigos de un ataque a nivel nacional contra los derechos de los estadounidenses LGBTQ+, las comunidades trans y no binarias en particular. Este Mes del Orgullo, es más importante que nunca que nos presentemos, escuchemos y apoyemos a nuestros vecinos LGBTQ+.

Espero que se unan a nosotros en las Celebraciones del Orgullo a lo largo de este mes. ¡Celebraremos “Pride en el One-Five Waterfront” el 17 de junio en el Puerto de Los Ángeles! Habrá una lista de festividades nuevas y emocionantes, que incluyen un brunch drag al mediodía y a las 2 p.m. una ceremonia del alza de la bandera en el Museo Marítimo de Los Ángeles. ACTUALIZACIONES

BANDERA DEL ORGULLO DEL PROGRESO EN LOS EDIFICIOS DE LA CIUDAD

Ondear la bandera de Progress Pride muestra nuestro apoyo a las comunidades LGBTQ+. Ayer presenté una moción para permitir que se izara la Bandera del Orgullo del Progreso en el Centro Cívico y en otras instalaciones de la Ciudad donde se exhiben las banderas estadounidenses, californianas y de la ciudad durante junio. La Ciudad de Los Ángeles debe demostrar este compromiso por una mayor inclusión y celebración de todas las personas.

PROGRAMA INSIDE SAFE

Durante las últimas semanas, los trabajadores de alcance han estado construyendo relaciones y confianza con las personas que viven en dos de nuestros campamentos más grandes en el área del puerto. Desde el miércoles, hemos permitido que unas 64 personas salgan de estos campamentos y se instalen en interiores.

Juntos pudimos traer los recursos de la ciudad, el condado, LAHSA y la experiencia de proveedores de servicios como Harbor Interfaith, para llevar a nuestros vecinos al interior con urgencia.

Nuestro trabajo no se hace aquí. Estamos comprometidos a brindarles a estas personas los servicios y el apoyo que necesitan para permanecer alojados.

PUENTE VINCENT THOMAS

La semana pasada escribí una carta a Caltrans para proporcionar comentarios y recomendaciones sobre el Proyecto de reemplazo de la cubierta del puente Vincent Thomas. Si bien sigo teniendo preocupaciones importantes sobre la calidad del aire y los impactos en el tráfico que este proyecto traerá a los residentes de Wilmington y en toda el área del puerto, me complace compartir que CalTrans aceptó varias de nuestras solicitudes, que incluyen:

✅ Ampliación del período de comentarios públicos hasta el 10 de julio de 2023
✅ Establecer un Comité Asesor Comunitario específico del proyecto para proporcionar comentarios sobre el proyecto durante todo el proceso.

SEMANA DE LA FLOTA

Desde fiestas de bienvenida hasta recorridos en barco y guerras de galeras, ¡el fin de semana pasado fue una celebración inolvidable de la Semana de la flota! ¡Nuestra comunidad salió a disfrutar de las festividades y a apoyar a nuestros miembros del servicio, además les mostramos lo que ofrece el One-Five!

MES DE LA HERENCIA AANHPI

El miércoles marcó el final del Mes de la Herencia de los asiáticos americanos, nativos hawaianos e isleños del Pacífico, un momento para celebrar las contribuciones que los miembros de la comunidad AANH & PI han hecho para dar forma al One-Five y Los Ángeles.

Entre las celebraciones en el distrito, tuvimos el honor de auspiciar el aniversario número 120 de la inmigración coreana, un relevo que comenzó en Koreatown y concluyó en la Campana de la Amistad Coreana en San Pedro.

Más allá de este mes, continuaremos elevando sus historias y comprometiéndonos a apoyar a nuestros vecinos de AANH y PI. ¡Puede ver el video aquí!

SEMANA DE LA CULTURA CROATA

¡Esta semana nos reunimos para celebrar la primera Semana de la Cultura Croata, que culminó con una increíble Fiesta Callejera de la Independencia Croata! Quiero agradecer a la Cónsul General Rene Pea por su liderazgo y a Jack Baric por reunir a la comunidad croata en el área del puerto y sus alrededores para los diversos eventos. ¡Desde ya, esperamos que llegue la Semana de la Cultura Croata del próximo año!

FERIA DE TRABAJO DE LA CIUDAD

¡Marque su calendario! El Departamento de Obras Públicas de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles estará en Watts el 29 de junio para una Feria de Trabajo, ¡y traeremos más socios de la Ciudad! Desde recreación y parques hasta transporte, LAPD, LAFD y más: ¡venga y vea los trabajos que la ciudad tiene para ofrecer!

CAMINO A LA UNIVERSIDAD

El programa Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor College Bound se fundó en 2002 con la participación de sólo 30 estudiantes de preparatoria. Este año, el programa College Bound se encuentra en 15 sitios en el área del puerto de Los Ángeles y atiende a más de 2,000 niños de preparatoria. El miércoles, tuve el honor de hablar en su graduación para celebrar los 647 estudiantes de último año que se graduaron con cientos de miles de dólares en becas otorgadas. Gracias al Boys & Girls Club del puerto de Los Ángeles por su dedicación a la juventud del One-Five.

DEPARTAMENTO DE MANTENIMIENTO DEL PUERTO

Uno de mis primeros trabajos cuando era joven fue como trabajador estudiante en la división de construcción en Harbor Department Yard en la década de 1980. El miércoles por la mañana, volví a visitar a estos dedicados empleados de la ciudad, desde los trabajadores de mantenimiento hasta los jardineros, ¡que trabajan incansablemente para mantener el puerto y el paseo marítimo hermosos y operativos!

PROGRAMA DE RECICLAJE DE PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS EN LA ACERA

El programa de reciclaje de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, OrganicsLA, se encarga de mantener los desechos orgánicos fuera de los vertederos y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.

El proyecto de ley SB 1383 requiere que todas las jurisdicciones del estado brinden un servicio de recolección de desechos orgánicos. Ahora se les pide a los residentes que coloquen los restos de comida y papel sucio con alimentos junto con los desechos del jardín en el contenedor verde.

Para ayudar a los residentes a comenzar a recolectar restos de comida, la Ciudad está proporcionando cubetas de cocina de 2 galones en 21 ubicaciones para TODOS los residentes de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles. LIMPIEZA COMUNITARIA

El sábado nos reunimos para limpiar los desechos ilegales en los callejones cerca de la escuela primaria Normont. ¡Gracias a GAP, la Cámara de Harbor Gateway y la Oficina de Embellecimiento por asociarse con nosotros y un agradecimiento especial a los miembros de la comunidad que vinieron en un fin de semana por la mañana para ayudar a mantener limpio el One-Five!

¡El próximo sábado acompáñenos en el Centro Recreativo de Harbor City para el corte de listón con helados gratis en la nueva área de juegos de Harbor City! ¡Tendremos música, bailarines folclóricos y una zona de arte con gis. ¡Los veo ahí!

SEÑALES DE ALTO INSTALADAS

Esta semana, con la ayuda del Departamento de Transporte de Los Ángeles, instalamos señales de alto en la 259th St. y Frampton Ave. para ayudar a reducir el exceso de velocidad en el área.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA PLANIFICACIÓN

Nuestro equipo se unió al Comité de Planificación y Uso de la Tierra del Consejo Vecinal de Harbor Gateway North la semana pasada para analizar los problemas y proyectos que se avecinan en Harbor Gateway North.

LIMPIEZA

Esta semana, LADWP despejó un lote sucio en la calle 118. ¡Continuaremos monitoreando esta ubicación para que nuestra comunidad se mantenga limpia!

El jueves asistí a la Caminata de Arte del Primer Jueves mensual. Siempre es una gran oportunidad para visitar nuestras tiendas locales, ver el arte y estar junto a la comunidad del Puerto.

SOUTH SHORES PRESENTA EL LIBRO DE LA SELVA

El martes por la noche, asistí a la producción del Libro de la Selva de la Escuela Magnet de South Shores para las Artes Visuales y Escénicas. Desde la actuación hasta las canciones (¡Bare Necessities fue un éxito!) ¡Déjenme decirles que estos estudiantes del LAUSD realizaron una actuación increíble! Gracias al director Suzuki por recibirme.

CARRERA DE LITTLE ITALY

En celebración del Día Nacional de Italia, la Asociación Little Italy de Los Ángeles será la anfitriona de ItalyRunLA. Acompañenos MAÑANA en la esquina de Harbor Blvd. y 6th St mientras corremos (¡o caminamos!) este recorrido de 5 km. DISEÑO DEL PARQUE JORDAN DOWNS

Este fin de semana, la comunidad de Jordan Downs se reunió para brindar comentarios sobre las representaciones para el parque infantil. La comunidad pudo ver representaciones de ideas conceptuales para el parque que se construirá.

YOUTH POP UP

Este fin de semana, nuestro equipo asistió a la reunión emergente de jóvenes del Children's Institute para repasar los puntos de conversación que presentarán en su viaje al Ayuntamiento este mes. A través de este ejercicio, pudieron entablar una conversación abierta para discutir sus mayores preocupaciones en la comunidad.

REPARACIÓN DE ACERAS

La División de Servicios de Construcción de la Oficina de Servicios Viales instalará una nueva acera en 737 E. Imperial Hwy. a partir de la semana del 5 de junio de 2023. Se colocarán anuncios temporales de prohibido estacionarse y, en ocasiones, se puede cerrar un carril para ayudar a facilitar la construcción.

DÍA CONMEMORATIVO

En el Día de los Caídos, honramos a nuestros soldados caídos en el cementerio de Wilmington, el segundo cementerio más antiguo de la ciudad de Los Ángeles. Es conmovedor que tengamos militares de todos los conflictos estadounidenses desde la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos enterrados en este cementerio histórico. Estamos eternamente agradecidos por el servicio y el sacrificio de cada generación aquí representada.

LIMPIEZA DE CALLEJÓN

Gracias a SBCC por limpiar el callejón cerca de la calle L y la Wilmington Blvd. el martes. Pudimos retirar objetos grandes y voluminosos y escombros para despejar el derecho de paso.

GRADUACIÓN DE JARDÍN DE NIÑOS

¡Felicitaciones a los estudiantes de la escuela Harry Bridges Span que se graduaron ayer del pre kínder! Un reconocimiento especial a su maestra, la Sra. Celia Mora por 25 años de enseñanza.

PUERTAS ABIERTAS

¡Tenemos una jornada de puertas abiertas en el edificio municipal de Wilmington! Acompáñenos el miércoles 28 de junio de 5 a 7 p. m., reúnase con nuestro equipo y visite los otros espacios de oficina en el edificio para conocer sus servicios.
