CHUMASH

Parshas Korach - Shvi'i with Rashi

Today we learn about the presents that we give to the Leviim.

The Leviim get the Maaser from the food the Yidden grow.

Just like the Kohanim, the Leviim don’t get a part of Eretz Yisroel.

We also learn that when the Leviim get their Maaser, they need to give a Maaser of that, to the Kohanim! They can’t eat the Maaser until they give the “Maaser ShebeMaaser” to the Kohanim.

The Leviim need to make sure that all of the other presents of the Kohanim were given before they eat their Maaser.

TEHILLIM

29 - 34

Today’s shiur Tehillim is kapitelach Chof-Tes to Lamed-Daled.

The Frierdiker Rebbe told this story:

Once when the Mitteler Rebbe was 7 or 8, he davened for a longer time than usual — he davenedba’arichus.” After he finished davening, someone asked him what took him so long! The Mitteler Rebbe answered that he stopped to think about something that is says in davening, and that made it take a long time.

Which part? It was a posuk from today’s TehillimKapitel Lamed (30:3)! (We say this kapitel every day before Boruch She’amar.) “Hashem Elokai, Shivati Eilecha Vatirpa’eini” — “I cried out to You, Hashem and You made me feel better!”

The Mitteler Rebbe was thinking about the word “Vatirpa’eini” (“and You healed me”). He was thinking how that word is like the word “rifyon” — making something weaker. He thought that the posuk could mean “I cried out to You, Hashem, and You made my Yetzer Hara not as strong!” He was thinking about how Hashem helps us win over our Yetzer Hara!

Very soon, when Moshiach comes, Hashem will take away our Yetzer Hara completely! We will have won the fight with the Yetzer Hara!

Until then, Hashem helps us make it weaker so we will act the way Hashem wants us to.

Shaar Hayichud Veha'emunah Perek Yud-Beis

Today we learn the details about how Hashem created everything using the osios of the Alef-Beis.

If you have a box of Legos and wanted to make a house, what would you call that house in Lashon Kodesh? Bayis! That’s beis, yud, sof. What about the box? That’s a “Teiva” — tof, yud, veis, hey.

But if they have three of the same letters, why are they such different things? Well, one of them has an extra letter, and they are in a different order!

Hashem made EVERYTHING in the world with letters. Hashem said “Yehi Rakia” — and there was a sky! Hashem used the letters reish, kuf, yud, ayin which became one word! Each letter has a special chayus, and when it is put together into a whole word, it gets the perfect chayus to make that thing.

When Hashem takes the same letters and makes a different word — like a vegetable (yerek) with yud, reish, kuf — then it gets a different chayus. It has many of the same letters, but in a different order, and it’s a different word. That’s why its chayus is different too, and it becomes a different thing in the world!

(Words that include a lot of things get a VERY strong chayus, like the sky. The different levels of the sky (Zvul, Machon, Shechakim...) don’t need as strong of a chayus. The Alter Rebbe also teaches us that the first letter of each word gives it more chayus than all of the other letters in the word.)

That’s how everything in the entire world was made with just 22 letters of the Alef-Beis. It might seem like SO many things — lakes and rocks and sky and sun and moon and stars and plants and fish and animals and people.... and so many of each kind of thing...

But it is ALL from one Hashem and the chayus He gives to everything with the 22 holy letters of the Alef-Beis!

HAYOM YOM

Hey Tammuz

Today in Hayom Yom, we learn the best way to have parnasa: When we do our job, Hashem will do His job!

A very close chossid of the Alter Rebbe once had Yechidus. He complained that he was having a very hard time with parnasa.

The Alter Rebbe answered him: “Hashem needs YOU to bring the light of Torah and Yiddishkeit to everyone around you. You need Hashem to give you parnasa. You do your job, and Hashem will do His!”

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #63 - Mitzvas Asei #153

Today in Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn the same mitzvah again (Mitzvas Asei #153): How the Beis Din needs to make a calendar and decide when the months and years start.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Bo: הַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לָכֶם רֹאשׁ חֳדָשִׁים

The details are explained in Mesechta Sanhedrin perek Alef, Mesechta Rosh Hashana and Brachos.

Hilchos Kiddush Hachodesh

In today’s Rambam, perakim Tes, Yud, and Yud-Alef, we finish learning about the calendar. Today we learn about when spring starts, which the Beis Din needed to know to decide when it would be a leap year to make sure Pesach is in the spring.

Today we also start to learn the really complicated part of Kiddush Hachodesh: How the Beis Din would know where the moon was and what it should look like, so they could make sure the witnesses were telling the truth.

Hilchos Kriyas Shema - Perek Hey

From the time of Moshe Rabbenu until Ezra Hasofer, there was no nusach for davening — everyone davened in their own words in Lashon Kodesh when they needed something.

Later, Yidden couldn’t properly express themselves in Lashon Kodesh anymore. So the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah wrote Shemoneh Esrei for everyone to say.

The first three brachos say how special Hashem is, and the last three brachos say “thank You” to Hashem. In the middle there are many brachos that ask Hashem for things that Yidden need.

The Chachomim also made set times for davening the different tefillos each day, that match up to the times when korbanos were brought.

INYANA D'YOMA

Stories the Rebbe Told Us

Once a Shliach went to teach a Yid about Yiddishkeit. He made an appointment to visit the man’s office. This man was a professor, who was very smart and not easy to speak to!

The Shliach started talking to him about Yiddishkeit, and the professor argued with him. The professor went to get a book to try to show the Shliach that he is right, and when he came back he saw that the Shliach is standing near the wall and shaking back and forth!

After he finished, the Shliach told the professor that he was davening Mincha before it got too late.

The professor was so impressed that even though this was an important appointment, when the Shliach had to talk to Hashem, he stopped right away to daven!

This professor became a Baal Teshuva and helped many other Yidden come closer to Yiddishkeit too!

The Rebbe told us that we should learn from here that even though manners are important, when we tell a Yid right away that we want Moshiach now, this will get his neshama excited! He sees that a regular person comes to him, and he’s thinking about Moshiach!

TEFILLAH

Az Yashir

One of the parts of davening we say every day is Az Yashir, the song that Moshe and the Yidden sang at the time of Kriyas Yam Suf.

The word “Yashir,” though, doesn’t mean “he SANG.” It means that he WILL sing! If we are talking about the song that was sung by the Yam Suf, why does it say that Moshe WILL sing it? The Chachomim teach us that this is hinting to Techiyas Hameisim, that Moshe Rabbeinu and the Yidden will sing this song when Moshiach comes!

Why is Techiyas Hameisim hinted to specifically here, and not somewhere else in the Torah?

At the time of Kriyas Yam Suf, a special koach of Hashem’s name, Havaya, was shining. This name of Hashem includes the past, present, and future together! This name of Hashem includes all times together, including the time of Techiyas Hameisim. It gave the koach that this song of Az Yashir should last for all generations! That’s why Techiyas Hameisim is hinted to specifically in Az Yashir, because it is a tefillah that is relevant for all times!

This gives us the koach that every day, and especially on Shvi’i Shel Pesach, we can relive Kriyas Yam Suf. That way we can sing with true joy, the song of Az Yashir!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Hashem Elokeichem Emes

There are a few different nuscha’os of how much of Shema we should say in Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah. We follow the minhag that the Alter Rebbe brings in the siddur, of saying all three paragraphs of ShemaShema, Vehaya, and Vayomer.

If you add up the words from all of these paragraphs, you will see that there are exactly 245 words. We add an extra 3 words to make a total of 248 words. This way, we can have in mind that each word of Shema should bring a refuah to one of the 248 parts of a person’s body.

We add the three words by repeating the last words of Shema, “Ani Hashem Elokeichem, Ani Hashem Elokeichem,” “I am Hashem Your Aibershter.” We then finish off with the word “Emes,” true.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

The Guf is Special!

During Golus, we don’t look at our guf as something so special B’Ruchnius. We see that the guf makes all kinds of problems in our Avodas Hashem! It has taavos, it gets too tired to do mitzvos, and it distracts us in the middle of davening and learning.

But when Moshiach comes, those things won’t bother us anymore.

Then, we’ll be able to see and appreciate how special and precious a Yiddishe guf is!
