Juneteenth is one of the most important anniversaries in our nation's history. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger, who had fought for the Union, led a force of soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver a message.

Two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery in the Confederacy, as Maj. Gen. Granger crossed the United States, he found out that news had traveled slowly. We celebrate June 19th on the day that enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free.

The year following became the first annual celebration of "Jubilee Day" on June 19. In June 2021, Congress passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. And, last year, the City of Los Angeles proclaimed Juneteenth an official city holiday.

I hope you will join us in attending the Juneteenth celebrations throughout the One-Five. A day of reflection and promise. A celebration of the strength and resilience of Black Americans, who have endured generations of oppression in their ongoing strive toward equality.

CHILDREN’S INSTITUTE

Since 2007, the Children’s Institute has worked in the Watts community to transform lives. This week, we welcomed into Council two programs of the Children's Institute - the Youth Council and Project Fatherhood!

The Youth Council brings young people from across the community to learn about Government 101, organizing advocacy strategies, and developing advocacy messaging. We were also honored to have Project Fatherhood with us in Council. This group does the work to support fathers in building healthy relationships with their children and their partners, enhancing parenting skills, and achieving economic stability. On Thursday, Assemblymember Mike Gipson declared June as Fatherhood Well-being Month in the State of California, and I am proud to have introduced this month a resolution in support of this bill, HR 36.

PRIDE ON THE WATERFRONT

Get ready to celebrate the Harbor Pride in style today! What better way to show your love for the LGBTQ+ community than by joining us at our incredible event, located right on the Los Angeles Waterfront? With an unforgettable drag brunch at noon, followed by the signature flag raising ceremony at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum at 2pm. With such an exciting lineup, there's no doubt that this will be a Pride to remember.

COMMUNITY SOFTBALL

On Saturday morning, we joined the Gentle Giants Foundation and the LAPD Community Safety Partnership to play softball! While much of the attention falls on the victims of crimes, Gentle Giants recognizes the trauma and impact left on the families. Thanks to Gentle Giants for everything your organization does to help support our One-Five families who have been through the unimaginable. From luncheons to softball games, bringing us together and speaking with one another helps to heal these wounds.

VINCENT THOMAS BRIDGE

While I continue to have significant concerns about the air quality and traffic impacts the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project will bring to the residents of Wilmington and throughout the Harbor Area, CalTrans has accepted a number of our requests, including:

✅ Extending the public comment period to July 10, 2023
✅ Establishing a project-specific Community Advisory Committee to provide feedback for the project throughout the process.

We will continue to advocate for mitigation funding to be used by the City for expanded community outreach, road repairs, and a comprehensive construction impact program throughout the communities that will be burdened with additional truck and car volumes.

ADOPT A PET

Father’s Day is Sunday and to encourage pet adoptions and celebrate all the paw-thers, LA Animal Services will be offering reduced adoption fees this weekend: Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18. Adoption fees for dogs will be $51 (not including $20 license) and $75 for puppies. Adoption fees for cats will be $12.50 and $25 for kittens.

The MC3 Construction Apprenticeship is coming soon! At the Harbor Occupational Center, come learn Apprenticeship Preparation, Hands & Power Tools, Introduction to Blueprint Reading Basics, and more! CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

HARBOR CITY PARK PLAYGROUND

Our Harbor City community came out on Saturday for a ribbon cutting at the renovated Harbor City Park playground! Just in time for summer, we celebrated with folklórico dancers, ice cream, hot dogs and chalk art. I can’t wait to see families from all over the Harbor Area and throughout the One-Five come to enjoy the outdoor fun!

COFFEE WITH A COP

I stopped by Coffee with a Cop on Saturday. It was a great opportunity for our community members to meet their Senior Lead Officers and receive information on resources available in the Harbor City.

STORM DRAIN INSPECTION

We reported this storm drain to 311 for a street inspection and it was found to be damaged, most likely from the forklift that picks up the trash bins on pick up day. Please be mindful of where we place our trash bins so we can keep our oceans free of debris. The crate will be replaced soon!

HARBOR GATEWAY NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

It was great to join the Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council Tuesday evening, to listen to stakeholder input, and honor the board members who have served the last two years. Thank you for your dedication and service to our community. I look forward to continuing to work together for the residents of the Gateway and throughout the One-Five!

Look up! Check out our Juneteenth street banners all around the Gateway and Athens on the Hill. With our street banner program to commemorate Juneteenth, we’re making sure that everyone is seen, heard, and celebrated in the One-Five.

STREET RESURFACING

On approximately Thursday, June 22nd through Tuesday, June 27th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave 223rd St. between Normandie Ave. and Denker Ave. Vehicle access and parking will be prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

EPA OPEN HOUSE

This week our staff visited the ​​United States Environmental Protection Agency’s open house where they provided information and updates on the extensive clean ups of the superfund sites in the Harbor Gateway. We will continue to work with the EPA, and their project managers are always available to answer any questions you may have.

GAFFEY BILLBOARD UPDATE

The billboard removal will be performed on TUESDAY, JUNE 20th. The curb lane southbound on Gaffey Street will be closed between Elberon Ave and O'Farrell St from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 110 Gaffey off-ramp will also have closures onto Southbound Gaffey St.

Expect delays and consider an alternate route. If you must drive through during this time, please proceed slowly, yield to workers and obey traffic control at the site.

ALLEY CLEAN UP

Check out these before and afters of an alley clean up on Gaffey St. near Channel St. Thank you to the LA Conservation Corps for keeping our main corridor clean!

CHILI COOK OFF

There’s nothing better than coming together for a good cause, and this one includes some great food! On Saturday for the Honorary Mayor of San Pedro campaign, I participated in judging a chili and bbq cook-off on the USS Iowa. The Honorary Mayor campaign is an incredible opportunity for the candidates to raise money for local non-profit organizations. The competition was steep and judging was a hard job, but someone’s gotta test all 7 chilis and 2 types of brisket to find the best one!

WARNER GRAND JUMPING JACK FLASH

The Warner Grand Theatre has been the source of incredible events and special memories for the past 92 years. Last weekend I attended the Gathering for the Grand, a live concert with Jumping Jack Flash, a Rolling Stones tribute band! I am so glad that we were able to postpone the closure date of this theater for renovations so we could have this special night!

FIESTA DIAMOND JUBILEE

On Sunday we attended Mary Star of the Sea Church to recognize and honor decades of Fiesta Queens. We celebrated 75 years of the Mary Star Fiesta, a fun and iconic tradition in San Pedro. The Fiesta is having its Diamond Jubilee this Summer! My mother attended both Mary Star Elementary and High School many years ago and the Fiesta has been a big support of the Parish School for all those years. Crowning the Queen of the Fiesta is always the weekend highlight.

FOOD DRIVE

On Wednesday, I joined the East Side Riders Bike Club for their weekly food drive with the LA Galaxy and LA Kings. I'm incredibly grateful to the East Side Riders for their dedication to our neighbors, and to these wonderful local sports organizations for recognizing that fandom begins outside the stadium, in the community, by caring for and uplifting our residents.

POWER OF WELLNESS

Last weekend we were at the Children’s Institute Power of Wellness event on Success! We celebrated with the community and enjoyed South LA Café food bags. It was a great event where they distributed diapers, gave away backpacks, and had a raffle! It truly was fun for the whole family!

FATHERS DAY

Last Friday we started Father’s Day off early by celebrating the Watts fathers in Nickerson Garden. Thanks to Donny for organizing a good, old fashioned dad hang out to eat some barbecue and watch the NBA finals.

SIDEWALK REPAIR

Many thanks to the Bureau of Street Services - StreetsLA for your work to repair nearly 1000 square feet of sidewalk on the 900 block of L Street. Projects like these make our communities safer, more mobile and more accessible.

LA TAQUERIA BRAND

Our office joined La Taqueria Brand Thursday for their Grand Opening. Congratulations to Ricardo Mosqueda and Benedicto Gonzalez! Go check it out on the corner of Anaheim and Broad St.

CLEANING UP ALAMEDA AND PCH

Thank you to LA Sanitation for cleaning up a site near Alameda St. and Pacific Coast Highway that was becoming both an environmental hazard as well as a public safety issue.

TRASH CAN REPLACEMENT

This week our office worked with the Bureau of Street Services to clean up the debris left by a trash can that had been knocked over on the corner of Figueroa and L St. We’re working with the Bureau of Street Services to replace the trash can as soon as possible!

CHILDREN’S INSTITUTE

SOFTBOL COMUNITARIO

El viernes pasado comenzamos temprano el Día del Padre celebrando a los padres de Watts en Nickerson Garden. Gracias a Donny por organizar una buena reunión de papá a la antigua para comer barbacoa y ver las finales de la NBA.

REPARACIÓN DE ACERAS

Muchas gracias a la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle- StreetsLA por su trabajo para reparar casi 1000 pies cuadrados de acera en la cuadra 900 de L Street. Proyectos como estos hacen que nuestras comunidades sean más seguras, más móviles y más accesibles.

LA TAQUERÍA BRAND

Nuestra oficina se unió a La Taquería Brand el jueves para su gran inauguración. ¡Felicidades a Ricardo Mosqueda y Benedicto González! Pueden visitarlos en la esquina de Anaheim y Broad St.

LIMPIEZA EN ALAMEDA Y PCH

Gracias a LA Sanitation por limpiar un sitio cerca de Alameda St. y Pacific Coast Highway que se estaba convirtiendo tanto en un peligro ambiental como en un problema de seguridad pública.

REEMPLAZO DEL BOTE DE BASURA

Esta semana, nuestra oficina trabajó con la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle para limpiar los escombros que dejó un bote de basura que había sido derribado en la esquina de las calles Figueroa y L. Estamos trabajando con la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle para reemplazar el bote de basura. ¡Lo antes posible!
