The city is hiring!

As one of the largest employers in California, the City of Los Angeles offers a vast array of career opportunities - but, as we come out of the pandemic, we have many job openings. Vacancies in city departments means service delays for our residents. As Chair of the Council Committee on Personnel and Hiring, I am committed to filling those positions.

Next week we’re going straight into the community with a range of City Departments for a Career Fair in Watts! Residents throughout the One-Five are encouraged to attend! This is a great opportunity to connect our talented residents with a rich diversity of career opportunities.

Wilmington suffers an undue burden of truck traffic and other goods movement related issues. With the closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge for the deck replacement, this will only get worse. Caltrans’ proposed detour route options will not only affect the drivers who take these streets to work every day, but it will affect their health cumulatively, as well as the health of the entire community.

Some of the projects, like the Alameda Street Widening Project and the Anaheim Street Widening Project that are along the detour have been 20 years in the making. Yesterday I introduced a motion for a comprehensive evaluation of how public projects may be impacted by the Vincent Thomas Bridge Project and make every effort to mitigate these effects.

JUNETEENTH

A day of celebration and resilience, from Watts to the Harbor - last weekend the One-Five honored Juneteenth. While June 19th, 1865 marks the official day that enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas were belatedly told that they were free, the struggle for universal freedom did not end. And in the One-Five, throughout Los Angeles, and beyond - we will continue to stand together and work toward true equality and justice. Happy Freedom Day!

PRIDE ON THE WATERFRONT

Thank you to everyone who came out to Pride on the Waterfront last weekend! From the Progress Pride flag raising, to the drag brunch, and a resource fair all along the Harbor, the One-Five showed its support for the LGBTQ+ community and I couldn’t be more proud!

FIREWORKS

As we get closer to the Fourth of July, we want to remind everyone that not only is it illegal, it’s very dangerous to shoot off your own fireworks. Let’s make sure that our LAFD and LAPD resources go to the important functions of their jobs without adding in the complications of fireworks. Please be respectful to our neighbors and pets and look for a professional firework show throughout the city here.

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Department of Parks and Recreation is providing a free summer lunch program to kids and teens 1-18 years old now through August 4th. Please contact your local Rec Center for more information.

LA ANIMAL SERVICES

Starting Wednesday, June 28, Angelenos may visit any of the six LA Animal Services Centers with no appointments needed to adopt or foster a pet or if they would like to have their animal companion microchipped. Center hours will be 8am to 5pm, Tuesdays through Fridays, and 11am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. City shelters will be closed on Mondays and City-observed holidays.

SUMMER LINE-UP ON THE WATERFRONT

Through Labor Day weekend, the Port of Los Angeles and its community partners offer a full slate of new and returning events on the LA Waterfront. This summer’s calendar of events has something for just about everyone. See here for a list of the events.

Some of the most popular City services can be requested by calling 311 or (213) 473-3231, visiting myla311.lacity.org, or using the MyLA311 mobile app. These services include graffiti removal, pothole repair, and bulky-item pickup.

CURBSIDE ORGANICS RECYCLING PROGRAM

OrganicsLA is a curbside recycling program from the City of LA to keep organic waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senate Bill 1383, which requires every jurisdiction in the state to provide organic waste collection service, will now require residents to place food scraps and food-soiled paper, along with yard waste, in their green bin.

To help residents start collecting food scraps, the City is providing 2-gal kitchen pails at 21 locations for ALL City of LA residents. Click here to learn more about the program and go on their website to pick up your own free pail.

SIDEWALK CLEAN UP

There was a much needed sidewalk clean up in the Harbor Pines area of Harbor City last week. If you feel an area needs attention please submit a 311 request or reach out to our office.

UPDATE AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

This week our team gave a monthly report at the Harbor City Neighborhood Council. We were also joined by CalTrans to discuss the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project. STREET RESURFACING

On Wednesday, June 28nd through Thursday, June 29th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave Marigold Ave. between 252nd St. and 254th St. Vehicle access and parking will be prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

CLEANING PUBLIC BINS

Workers from the Department of Sanitation were able to clean up one of the public trash bins in the Harbor Gateway. While the bins are maintained regularly, please report any overflows or illegal dumping on 311!

CLEARING DEBRIS AND OVERGROWN VEGETATION

Caltrans crews helped clear trash and debris along the 405 freeway between Normandie and Vermont this week, in addition to clearing up overgrown vegetation!

WELCOMING TWO COASTS

On Thursday we celebrated the grand opening of Two Coast Brewing! Alongside Gardena Mayor Tasha Cerda, I want to congratulate Roger and Jan on your new venture!

On Thursday I had the honor of swearing in the new San Pedro Chamber Board. I look forward to working with you all to make San Pedro a better place to live, work, and visit. A special congratulations to the new Honorary Mayor, Manny Jimenez!

STREET REPAIR

Street Services is working to repair the street on S. Meyler St. & W. 37th St. The bureau recently cleaned up the area and made room for vehicles to make a right turn safely. Repairs will start in the coming weeks.

MUSIC BY THE SEA

Music by the sea at Point Fermin Park is starting Sunday! Come down and enjoy the free show and the wonderful views of Point Fermin Park! The line up for Sunday includes the following bands Dirty Ice Cream, The Priest, Monsters on Vacation, and 110 South. For more information click here.

JORDAN HIGH

For decades, students at Jordan High School have suffered from the activity and emissions generated by Atlas Iron and Metal Recycling next door to the campus. On Wednesday, the District Attorney announced charges against the waste facility. If more affluent LA communities wouldn't allow for an environmental hazard like Atlas Irons to operate so close to their students, neither should Watts.

WLCAC FISH FRY

Last Friday, I attended the WLCAC Fish Fry, a staff appreciation event, to celebrate the hardworking staff of the WLCAC and everything they do to serve the Watts community. Their tireless efforts and dedication is felt throughout the One-Five!

PROJECT FATHERHOOD MARCH

Honored to be in Watts Saturday morning with Keith Parker, Director of Project Fatherhood at Children's Institute. With Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, leaders from Watts, and over 200 fathers, we marched together around Ted Watkins Park to bring awareness to the importance of father-figures in our community.

WATTS TOWERS ART CENTER SUMMER CAMP

Join us for an unforgettable experience filled with fun and exciting art activities that include painting, drawing, and much more. The Watts Towers Arts Center Campus camp provides a supportive and nurturing environment where students can express themselves creatively and develop artistic skills. The camp runs from June 28 - July 21st, Wednesday-Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM, for ages 6-16. UNVEILING NEW MURAL

Pieces of art can transform a public space - adding beauty to our walls and streets. 'The Two Wilmas' by Hugo Lomeli is a mural depicting children playing - one of whom lifts a shipping container as if it were a toy. It is a clever transformation of a common element of the Harbor area. On Thursday, we celebrated the official dedication of the mural on the Avalon Blvd frontage of the Wilmington YMCA - 1127 N. Avalon Blvd. Go check it out!

ACTUALIZACIONES

Wilmington sufre una carga excesiva de tráfico de camiones y otros problemas relacionados con el movimiento de mercancías. Con el cierre del Puente Vincent Thomas para el reemplazo de la plataforma, esto solo empeorará. Las opciones de ruta de desvío propuestas por Caltrans no solo afectarán a los conductores que toman estas calles para trabajar todos los días, sino que afectarán su salud de manera acumulativa, así como la salud de toda la comunidad.

DIA DE LA EMANCIPACIÓN

El fin de semana pasado, One-Five honró el día de la emancipación, mejor conocido como Juneteenth, con un día de celebración y resiliencia, desde Watts hasta el puerto. Si bien el 19 de junio de 1865 marca el día oficial en que a los estadounidenses esclavizados en Galveston, Texas se les dijo tardíamente que eran libres, la lucha por la libertad universal no terminó. En el One-Five, en todo Los Ángeles y más allá, continuaremos unidos y trabajando hacia la verdadera igualdad y justicia. ¡Feliz día de la libertad!

ORGULLO FRENTE AL MAR

SERVICIOS DE ANIMALES

A partir del miércoles 28 de junio, los angelinos pueden visitar cualquiera de los seis Centros de Servicios para Animales de Los Ángeles sin necesidad de citas para adoptar o cuidar temporalmente una mascota o si desean que le coloquen un microchip a su animal de compañía. PROGRAMA DE RECICLAJE DE PRODUCTOS ORGÁNICOS EN LA ACERA

El programa de reciclaje de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, OrganicsLA, se encarga de mantener los desechos orgánicos fuera de los vertederos y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.

El proyecto de ley SB 1383 requiere que todas las jurisdicciones del estado brinden un servicio de recolección de desechos orgánicos. Ahora se les pide a los residentes que coloquen los restos de comida y papel sucio con alimentos junto con los desechos del jardín en el contenedor verde.

PRESENTACIÓN DEL NUEVO MURAL

Las obras de arte pueden transformar un espacio público, agregando belleza a nuestras paredes y calles. "The Two Wilmas" de Hugo Lomeli es un mural que representa a niños jugando, una de ellos levanta un contenedor de transporte como si fuera un juguete. Es una transformación inteligente de un elemento común del área del puerto. El jueves celebramos la dedicación oficial del mural en la fachada de Avalon Blvd de Wilmington YMCA - 1127 N.
