Each July, the Los Angeles City Council goes into recess for a few weeks. We take a pause from the legislative work and it gives me a chance to dive straight into the communities, spending even more time with our neighbors at community meetings and events.

These are weeks that are my favorite. Instead of spending hours at City Hall, I'm able to be with you. It gives me the opportunity to celebrate with you, serve with you, and hear directly from you.

This is how we build a better One-Five. It’s not downtown at City Hall, it’s directly by empowering our communities. It’s hearing directly from you on the issues that are important to you.

I’m looking forward to spending time with the five communities that make our district so great. See you out there!

UPDATES

BLOODY THURSDAY

July 5, 1934 is a day that forever changed labor practices for longshore workers on our West Coast but also the labor movement nationwide. On the morning of the 89th Anniversary of “Bloody Thursday,” we laid wreaths at the gravesites of the first two slain during the Great West Coast Strike - LA Harbor residents, Dickie Parker and John Knudsen. Their sacrifice resulted in a coastwide contract, with all workers on the Pacific Coast receiving the same basic wages and working under protected hours and conditions; and a six-hour workday with a fair hourly wage. We then followed it with a family picnic in honor of Bloody Thursday at the 22nd St. Park in celebration of union strength and worker solidarity.

FOURTH OF JULY

We kicked off the Fourth of July celebrations by joining the Korean Friendship Bell Preservation Committee for the 46th Annual 4th of July Community Observance at the Korean Bell. Each year we gather at the bell to celebrate our nation’s birthday with the traditional ringing of the bell -- 13 times – once for each of the original states.

STATE INVESTMENTS IN THE ONE-FIVE

On Thursday, we announced with the Port of Long Beach an investment from the State of more than $1.5 billion in a Port and Freight Infrastructure Program (PFIP) as part of the state’s work to build a more efficient, sustainable and resilient supply chain.

$1.2 billion will fund 15 projects creating an estimated 20,000 jobs and increase the capacity to move goods throughout the state’s global trade gateways while lessening environmental impacts on neighboring communities.

Administered by the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), $350 million was also awarded to 13 projects that eliminate street-level rail crossings to make critical life-saving improvements, reduce emissions and keep goods and people moving safely.

FREE SUMMER LUNCH

The Department of Recreation & Parks is providing a free summer lunch program to kids and teens 1-18 years old now through August 4th. Please contact your local Rec Center for more information.

STREET SLURRY SEAL

Check out this slurry seal on Senator Ave. from 259th to 260th St. Slurry seal is applied to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new driving surface.

WEEDING OUT

Thank you to the city’s Bureau of Public Works for answering the community’s requests and performing a weed abatement in the unincorporated area of Harbor City along Normandie Ave.!

CALLING IN TREE OBSTRUCTIONS

If you know of a tree that is causing an obstruction to a stop sign, or another street safety device, please report it to 311 as a tree emergency. Thank you to Urban Forestry for making our neighborhoods safer by clearing tree obstructions like this one!

ONE-FIVE FIRESIDE CHAT

Join us Thursday, July 20th, for a very special fireside chat at Camp Machado in the Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park Outdoor Amphitheater. From 5-7 PM come hear what our office has been up to the last few months, ask questions, and discuss ways to improve the Harbor City community and the greater One-Five! NORMANDALE REC CENTER PLAYGROUND

Last weekend, we cut the ribbon on the newly renovated Normandale Recreation Center’s Playground! This playground will be the perfect place to spend the summer days and you can join us in the evenings at the park for Summer Night Lights Wednesday-Friday from 7-11 P.M. Be on the lookout for another ribbon cutting when the Normandale Baseball field upgrades are completed in the fall.

LIVE YO LIFE FOOD DISTRIBUTION

On Saturday, I helped Nakiesha Scott set up food boxes and get the flowers ready for her food giveaway in Harbor Gateway North! Her foundation, Live Yo Life, has a weekly food distribution held on Saturdays at their HQ at 13008 S Figueroa, as well as mentorship programs and more.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB

The Boys and Girls Club on Gardena Boulevard has gotten an upgrade! They recently completed their exterior renovations that included a brand new fence as well as plants!

ALMA PARK PICNIC

On Saturday we celebrated the 2nd annual Alma Park Picnic! The Alma Park Neighbors work to create a clean, safe, and welcoming neighborhood by encouraging an inclusive community where neighbors help neighbors. It was great to come together and eat, listen to music, and raffle off some great prizes!

REPAIRING MEYLER STREET

Our office worked with the Bureau of Street Services to address the area around 3700 S. Meyler St. The street was in need of repair due to heavy vehicular traffic and we’re glad to report that it has been repaired!

SHAKESPEARE BY THE SEA

It was so great to watch timeless tales told by the talented cast of Shakespeare by the Sea while the sun set at the historic bandshell of Point Fermin Park last weekend. Check out Twelfth Night tonight, July 8th and August 4th or Hamlet on August 5th. For more information click here.

STREET RESURFACING

Starting Monday, July 10th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave the dead end streets north of W. 35th St. Abalone Ave, Gurnard Ave. and Bowfin Ave. There will be vehicle access, however parking is prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

SERVICE AT ST. JOHN’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

On Sunday, I attended services at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Watts with Pastor Kathey Wilborn. After fires damaged the church, the leadership and worshippers have kept their faith and community strong by continuing to hold services in the parking lot. Thank you for your inspiration, prayers, and especially for welcoming me.

DIAPER GIVEAWAY

The East Side Riders Bike Club is more than just a bike club, they do an incredible job helping provide for our neighbors. This week we participated in their diaper giveaway and distributed diapers and wipes to mothers.

BASKETBALL AT NICKERSON GARDENS

On Monday the Watts Magicians competed in a basketball tournament with teams from East LA, Boston, and Australia to uplift sports and mental health. Thanks to Darryl Edwards for organizing such an incredible event!

ROTARY CLUB

Last Friday I attended the demotion of Rafael Garcia, the President of the Rotary Club of Wilmington and celebrated his leadership and exemplary “Service above Self” attitude. A special congratulations as well to Christian Anaya, the incoming president!

HEALTH FAIR

The Summer Urban Health Fellowship (SUHF) is partnering with Harbor-UCLA Family Medicine and Providence Health to host an annual health fair at the Providence Wellness & Activity Center in Wilmington on Saturday July 15th from 9 AM to 2 PM.

COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER

Last week we attended the Community Baby Shower at LA Care to distribute gifts and resources from community partners. Congratulations to the moms-to-be!

BULKY ITEM CLEAN UP

This week our office joined SBCC for two bulky item clean ups on Colon St. between Watson and Sanford, as well as on Marine and F Streets. Thank you SBCC for being such a great partner in our efforts to make Wilmington clean and beautiful!

Cada mes de julio, el Ayuntamiento de Los Ángeles entra en receso durante algunas semanas. Tomamos una pausa del trabajo legislativo y me da la oportunidad de sumergirme directamente en las comunidades, pasando aún más tiempo con nuestros vecinos en reuniones y eventos comunitarios.

Estas semanas son mis favoritas. En lugar de pasar horas en el Ayuntamiento, puedo estar con ustedes. Tengo la oportunidad de celebrar, servirlos y escucharlos directamente.

Así es como construimos un mejor One-Five. No es en el centro de Los Ángeles ni en el Ayuntamiento, es directamente empoderando nuestras comunidades. Es escuchando directamente los temas que son importantes para ustedes.

ACTUALIZACIONES

BLOODY THURSDAY (JUEVES SANGRIENTO)

El 5 de julio de 1934 es un día que cambió para siempre las prácticas laborales de los trabajadores portuarios en nuestra costa oeste, pero también el movimiento laboral en todo el país. En el aniversario número 89 del “Jueves Sangriento”, por la mañana colocamos coronas de flores en las tumbas de los dos primeros asesinados durante la Gran Huelga de la Costa Oeste: los residentes del puerto de Los Ángeles, Dickie Parker y John Knudsen. Su sacrificio resultó en un contrato para todos los trabajadores en la costa del Pacífico recibiendo los mismos salarios básicos y trabajando bajo horas y condiciones protegidas; y una jornada laboral de seis horas con un salario justo por hora. Luego lo seguimos con un picnic familiar en honor al Jueves Sangriento en 22nd St. Park para celebrar la fuerza sindical y la solidaridad de los trabajadores.

CUATRO DE JULIO

Comenzamos las celebraciones del 4 de julio uniéndonos al Comité de Preservación de la Campana de la Amistad de Corea para la Observación Comunitaria Anual Número 46 del 4 de julio en la Campana de Corea. Cada año nos reunimos en la campana para celebrar el cumpleaños de nuestra nación con el toque tradicional de la campana, 13 veces, una vez para cada uno de los estados originales.

INVERSIÓN ESTATAL EN EL ONE-FIVE

El jueves, anunciamos con el Puerto de Long Beach una inversión del Estado de más de $1.500 millones en un Programa de Infraestructura Portuaria y de Carga (PFIP) como parte del trabajo del estado para construir una cadena de suministro más eficiente, sostenible y resiliente.

Del total, $1,200 millones financiarán 15 proyectos que crearán aproximadamente 20,000 puestos de trabajo y aumentarán la capacidad de mover bienes a través de las puertas de enlace comerciales globales del estado, al mismo tiempo que disminuirán los impactos ambientales en las comunidades vecinas. PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZOS EN VERANO

CLUB DE NIÑOS Y NIÑAS

PICNIC EN EL PARQUE ALMA

¡El sábado celebramos el segundo picnic anual de Alma Park! Los Vecinos de Alma Park trabajan para crear un vecindario limpio, seguro y acogedor fomentando una comunidad inclusiva donde los vecinos ayudan a los vecinos. ¡Fue genial reunirnos, comer, escuchar música y sortear algunos premios geniales!

REPARACIÓN DE LA CALLE MEYLER

Nuestra oficina trabajó con la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle para abordar el área alrededor de 3700 S. Meyler St. La calle necesitaba reparación debido al intenso tráfico vehicular y nos complace informar que se ha reparado.

SHAKESPEARE JUNTO AL MAR

PAVIMENTACIÓN DE CALLES

A partir del lunes 10 de julio, la Oficina de Servicios Viales trabajará para repavimentar las calles sin salida al norte de W. 35th St. Las avenidas Abalone, Gurnard, y Bowfin tendrán prohibido el acceso y estacionamiento de vehículos durante esta fase. Se colocarán señales temporales de prohibido estacionarse al menos 24 horas antes del trabajo.

SERVICIO EN IGLESIA METODISTA UNIDA DE ST. JOHN

El domingo asistí a los servicios en la Iglesia Metodista Unida de St. John en Watts con la pastora Kathey Wilborn. Después de que los incendios dañaron la iglesia, el liderazgo y los feligreses han mantenido fuertes su fe y su comunidad al continuar realizando servicios en el estacionamiento. Gracias por su inspiración, oraciones y especialmente por darme la bienvenida.

SORTEO DE PAÑALES

El East Side Riders Bike Club es más que un simple club de bicicletas, hacen un trabajo increíble ayudando a nuestros vecinos. Esta semana participamos en su sorteo de pañales y distribuimos pañales y toallitas húmedas a las madres.

BALONCESTO EN NICKERSON GARDENS

El lunes, los Watts Magicians compitieron en un torneo de baloncesto con equipos del este de Los Ángeles, Boston y Australia para mejorar los deportes y la salud mental. ¡Gracias a Darryl Edwards por organizar un evento tan increíble!
