I want to wish you a very happy Fourth of July! A celebration of our Independence, of our country’s values of freedom and democracy, while remembering the work we must do to ensure those values are a reality for all.

We’ve got a lot of great events in honor of Independence Day culminating in the 72nd John Olguin Fireworks Spectacular. This fireworks tradition will light up the sky over Cabrillo Beach at 9:15 p.m. Bring beach chairs and blankets and enjoy this free evening celebrating Independence Day.

As we get closer to the Fourth of July, I want to remind everyone that fireworks are not only illegal, it’s very dangerous to shoot off your own fireworks. We've had a history across the city, and we've certainly had our share in the One-Five of fires and serious injuries being caused by illegal use of fireworks. We've had fires that have put parks, property, and people at risk.

Let’s make sure that our LAFD and LAPD resources go to the important functions of their jobs without adding in the complications of fireworks. Please be respectful to our neighbors, pets, and our community and look for a professional firework show throughout the city here.

Yesterday, as we closed out Pride Month, the Council adopted my motion seeking to fly the Progress Pride Flag at City Hall and at city facilities.

This month is supposed to be about not just acceptance but celebration, yet, throughout the country trans and non-binary communities are under attack. And it’s in our own backyard as well. With this motion, we’re saying that LGBTQ+ residents have the unwavering support of their city and their government.

Raising the Progress Pride Flag signals our shared commitment to inclusion, fostering safe spaces, and embracing love in all our communities. We must strive to ensure that all of Los Angeles is a place our LGBTQ+ community is proud to call home all year long. And we will continue to stand up against hate and homophobia and fight it with love and acceptance.

This month in the One-Five we had an incredible Pride on the Waterfront and we will continue, beyond this month, to continue to show up, listen, and stand with our LGBTQ+ neighbors. Check out our Pride on the Waterfront recap on Instagram and Facebook!

LAHSA’S POINT-IN-TIME COUNT

Every year LAHSA’s point-in-time homeless count gives us a snapshot of how we’re doing in our efforts to address the homelessness crisis. A month into my first term was when LAHSA conducted this year’s count. While it’s tragic how high these numbers are, we expected numbers like this. I walked every inch of this district during the campaign and saw the enormity of our crisis in real time. This is my community, and my team and I know each neighborhood, street and alleyway of the One-Five, which is why we hit the ground running in December.

Since the January point-in-time count, I’ve been working with the Mayor and the Council to address the root causes of homelessness. From keeping roofs over heads and improving our mental health support, we are also addressing street homelessness safely and compassionately through Inside Safe operations. However, with a 10% increase in the city and a 9% increase in the county, these numbers show that the issue is too big for our jurisdictions to handle by ourselves. We need to work together with every level of government including our neighboring cities and counties, state and federal partners - because we can’t do it alone.

CAREER FAIR

The women and men who work for the City of Los Angeles in our various departments are critically important in uplifting the quality of life in our community. On Thursday, we held a Career Fair in Watts at Ted Watkins' Park to bring the jobs straight into the One-Five. From the Public Works Department to the Department of Transportation, Recreation and Parks, and more, residents were able to hear about employment opportunities, apply, and even interview for positions!

GANG INJUNCTION REPAIR SETTLEMENT

This week we took steps to repair some of the wrongs done to the folks who were improperly targeted by injunction orders and experienced unjust enforcement. I was proud to stand with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, Carolyn Hull (General Manager of Economic & Workforce Development Department), and Gang Interventionists throughout the city to announce the one year extension of the Gang Injunction Curfew Settlement and push to identify and connect class members to services and benefits.

Angelenos who were served with one or more gang injunctions should contact the EWDD to determine whether they are eligible to receive settlement benefits. For more information click here.

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Department of Recreation & Parks is providing a free summer lunch program to kids and teens 1-18 years old now through August 4th. Please contact your local Rec Center for more information.

LA ANIMAL SERVICES

In anticipation of a busy 4th of July weekend at shelters, LA Animal Services and Best Friends Animal Society are hosting a National Adoption Weekend at all six LA Animal Services Centers now through July 2. Adoption fees for dogs will be $51 (not including $20 license) and $75 for puppies. Adoption fees for cats will be $12.50 and $25 for kittens. SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS HARBOR CITY

Wednesday was the first night of Summer Night Lights and it was busy at the Harbor City Recreation Center! Come for the free dinner, music, games and Zumba for the whole family. Summer Night Lights takes place Wednesday and Friday nights starting at 7 PM.

QUICK ACTION BY LADWP & LAFD

On Wednesday evening a traffic accident occurred at 8:15 PM causing a fire hydrant to burst on Lomita Blvd. and Western Ave. in Harbor City. Thanks to the hard work of LADWP and LAFD, water was restored to the area within a few hours and a new water hydrant is up and running.

STREET RESURFACING

Thanks to the Bureau of Street Services, 251st St. between Petroleum and Marigold Ave. is newly resurfaced! Keep an eye out for notices of street work in your neighborhood as parking will be prohibited during the times listed.

ALLEY CLEAN UP

Thanks to the Bureau of Sanitation for cleaning up the alley off of 253rd St. between Normandie and Frampton Ave! You can call our office to arrange a clean up or use the MyLA311 app to report illegal dumping.

NORMANDALE PLAYGROUND

Today is the grand opening of the Normandale Park Playground! This newly renovated playground is the perfect place to spend the summer days!

SIDEWALK REPAIR

The Bureau of Street Services completed a sidewalk repair on Imperial Highway last week in Harbor Gateway North.

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS HARBOR GATEWAY

Summer Night Lights kicked off in the Gateway this week! Both Rosecrans and Normandale Recreation Centers will have activities, games and food throughout the summer. Join us at either of the parks Wednesday-Saturday from 7-11 PM!

BULKY ITEM PICK UP

Please continue to use 311 to not only report illegal dumping, but bulky items! Download the MyLA311 app if you need to dispose of a big item such as a couch or dresser, it will be picked up for free the day after your regular trash pick up day!

SIDEWALK REPAIR

Street Services is installing a new sidewalk on the Westbound side of Weymouth leading to Western. Not only will this make the neighborhood more walkable for the local residents, but it will help students travel to the Willenberg Career and Transition Center, where our partners at LAUSD help prepare the students for various careers.

MARINE EXCHANGE CELEBRATION

This Thursday we celebrated 100 years of service for the Marine Exchange Southern California. Providing Maritime Peace of Mind to the waterfront stakeholders of Southern California, the Marine Exchange is staffed by active-duty members of the U.S. Coast Guard and non-government Marine Exchange employees. The Vessel Traffic Service oversees 28,000 vessel movements per year in the San Pedro Bay Ports complex.

ANNUAL EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS EXERCISE

On Sunday I joined the San Pedro Amateur Radio Club at Angels Gate Park for the Annual Emergency Communications Exercise in which thousands of voice and digital radio amateurs across North America participate. Not only does amateur radio bring people and technology together, but it provides vital communications in times of emergency, when all else fails.

MUSIC BY THE SEA

I’m proud to be a sponsor of Music By The Sea 2023 at Pt. Fermin Park and last Sunday I attended the opening day! The concerts in the historic bandshell are a great way to bring the residents of the One-Five together on Sundays in the Summer. For more information click here. STREET RESURFACING

On Wednesday, July 5th and Thursday July 6th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave the alley north of Paseo Del Mar from Graysby Ave. to the dead end after Stargazer Ave. Vehicle access and parking will be prohibited during this phase. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

CORNER STORE 76th ANNIVERSARY

Join us July 3rd as we celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the Corner Store! There will be the full menu plus pizza, live music, face painting for kids, and raffle prizes that include free coffee for a year and a round trip for 2 on Catalina Express.

STREET SOCCER USA

Street Soccer USA is an incredible program working to strengthen communities through soccer. Last Saturday, they set up a tournament at Imperial Courts in Watts bringing together kids from throughout the One-Five and South LA. The games were nail-biters and they even offered haircuts based on soccer legends. I didn’t go for the Cristiano Ronaldo lightning trim but it was tempting!

THE WOMEN OF WATTS

For 20 years, the Women of Watts and Beyond, founded by Lydia Friend, has been dedicated to serving the Watts community by empowering residents and strengthening family bonds. Last weekend, we celebrated the big 2-0 with a street festival on 103rd Street. Congratulations on 20 years!

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

This week we swore in the new Watts Neighborhood Council Board! I’m looking forward to working together to uplift Watts and the entire One-Five! Their next meeting is Tuesday, July 11 at the WLCAC.

OPEN HOUSE

On Wednesday evening, we opened our doors and brought the community into our newly redesigned District Office and the Wilmington Municipal Building! Here we have a great range of government agencies and nonprofits. Come visit us at 544 N. Avalon Boulevard!

PHOTOVOICE EXHIBITION

Last Saturday, Photovoice held a gallery exhibit and resource fair in the Wilmington Town Square to bring awareness to the dangers and impact of Secondhand Smoke. These photos capturing the Wilmington community, brings this important conversation home and shows the reality of the daily encounters people have with Secondhand Smoking.

CLEAN UP

Thanks to Mamas Unidas of Wilmington for organizing a clean up around King Ave. and F Street! On Saturday morning, we drove around the neighborhood picking up bulky items from the street and sidewalks to provide a safer and cleaner right-of-way. We’ve also provided a bin on the corner of Avalon Blvd. and F Street that remained throughout the weekend for residents to drop off their bulky items!

WILMINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

On Thursday we installed a new President and Board of Directors for the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. Serving the community for 119 years, the chamber has been a critical resource and support system for business owners and entrepreneurs in the Wilmington Community.

ACTUALIZACIONES

Ayer, cuando cerramos el Mes del Orgullo, el Concejo adoptó mi moción que busca ondear la Bandera del Orgullo del Progreso en el Ayuntamiento y en las instalaciones de la ciudad.

Este mes debería tratarse no sólo de aceptación sino de celebración, sin embargo, en todo el país, las comunidades trans y no binarias están bajo ataque. Y también está en nuestro propio patio trasero. Con esta moción, decimos que los residentes LGBTQ+ cuentan con el apoyo inquebrantable de su ciudad y su gobierno.

Levantar la Bandera del Orgullo de Progreso señala nuestro compromiso compartido con la inclusión, fomentando espacios seguros y abrazando el amor en todas nuestras comunidades. Debemos esforzarnos por garantizar que todo Los Ángeles sea un lugar al que nuestra comunidad LGBTQ+ se enorgullezca de llamar hogar durante todo el año. Y continuaremos enfrentándonos al odio y la homofobia y combatiéndolos con amor y aceptación.

CONTEO DE LAHSA

Cada año, el recuento de personas sin hogar de LAHSA nos brinda un estimado de cómo nos está yendo en nuestros esfuerzos para abordar la crisis de personas sin hogar. Un mes después de mi primer mandato fue cuando LAHSA realizó el recuento de este año. Si bien, es trágico ver lo altos que son estos números, esperábamos números como este. Recorrí cada centímetro de este distrito durante la campaña y vi la enorme crisis en tiempo real. Esta es mi comunidad, y mi equipo y yo conocemos cada vecindario, calle y callejón del One-Five, por lo que comenzamos a trabajar en diciembre.

Desde el recuento puntual de enero, he estado trabajando con la alcaldesa y el concejo para abordar las causas fundamentales de la falta de vivienda. Desde mantener los techos sobre las cabezas de las personas y mejorar nuestro apoyo a la salud mental, también estamos abordando la falta de vivienda en las calles de manera segura y compasiva a través de las operaciones Inside Safe. Sin embargo, con un aumento del 10% en la ciudad y un aumento del 9% en el condado, estas cifras muestran que el problema es demasiado grande para que en nuestras jurisdicciones lo manejemos solos. Necesitamos trabajar junto con todos los niveles de gobierno, incluyendo nuestras ciudades y condados vecinos, socios estatales y federales, porque no podemos hacerlo solos.

FERIA DE EMPLEOS

Las mujeres y hombres que trabajan para la Ciudad de Los Ángeles en nuestros diversos departamentos son de vital importancia para mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestra comunidad. El jueves, llevamos a cabo una feria de empleo en Watts en el Ted Watkins' Park para llevar los trabajos directamente al One-Five. Desde el Departamento de Obras Públicas hasta el Departamento de Transporte, Recreación y Parques, y más, los residentes pudieron escuchar sobre oportunidades de empleo, presentar solicitudes e incluso entrevistas para puestos.

ACUERDO DE MANDATO CONTRA PANDILLAS

Esta semana tomamos medidas para reparar algunos de los daños causados a las personas que fueron atacadas indebidamente por órdenes judiciales y experimentaron una aplicación injusta. Me enorgulleció estar con la concejal Eunisses Hernandez, el Departamento de Desarrollo Económico y Laboral y los intervencionistas de pandillas en toda la ciudad para anunciar la extensión de un año del Acuerdo de toque de queda por orden judicial de pandillas y presionar para identificar y conectar a los miembros de la clase con los servicios y beneficios.

Los angelinos que recibieron una o más órdenes judiciales contra pandillas deben comunicarse con el EWDD para determinar si son elegibles para recibir beneficios del acuerdo. Para obtener más información, haga clic aquí.

FIN DE SEMANA DE ADOPCIÓN DE MEJORES AMIGOS

El domingo me uní al Club de Radioaficionados de San Pedro en Angels Gate Park para el Ejercicio Anual de Comunicaciones de Emergencia en el que participan miles de radioaficionados digitales y de voz de toda América del Norte. La radioafición no solo une a las personas y la tecnología, sino que proporciona comunicaciones vitales en tiempos de emergencia, cuando todo lo demás falla.

EXPOSICIÓN FOTOVOZ

CÁMARA DE COMERCIO DE WILMINGTON
