Guru Poornima 2023

“The Guru is not a human being. Don't think he's like you or I. It is not so. In the Guru, the divine energy, the love of God, is manifested so much that the Guru's body is not an ordinary human body.” —Swami Prajñanananda

This weekend, Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville and the Integral Yoga organization celebrate Guru Poornima, the ancient tradition of honoring one's Guru during the full moon in July. In Integral Yoga, we celebrate the life and teachings of our Guru Sri Swami Satchidanandaji . Additionally, as he was a pioneer in the interfaith movement and encouraged us to honor the great saints and faiths during Guru Poornima, we include an interfaith worship service and mark the anniversary of the Light of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS), which was dedicated in July of 1986. (Local IY centers are holding programs and portions of  Yogaville's program will be livestreamed.)

You are Light!
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Let us know that in Truth you are the Divine Image, the image of God. Somehow the veil of the ego prevents you from realizing this. Just remove that veil. It is that veil that is the basis for all these mental dramas. It creates all kinds of problems, troubles, anxieties and fears. So please, if anybody has that self-centered or selfish ego, say,
“E-go.” Don’t welcome any selfishness anymore. Once that goes away you become humble and your mind will be totally under your control. You will become the master.

The Chinese sage, Chuang-Tzu, once had a dream in which he was a butterfly. When he woke up, he didn’t know for sure if before, he had been a man dreaming he was a butterfly, or if now, he was a butterfly dreaming he was a man. Likewise, we are all caught in a dream of our own creation. We don’t see things as they truly are. Now, imagine for a moment what would happen if you were in the middle of a dream, and suddenly someone who is fully awake, an enlightened being, entered it?  MORE

The Practice of Trataka Meditation
By Ava Roman

The practice of Trataka meditation involves focusing on one specific object or focus point rather than an internal idea. Many people use it as a purification or focus technique, especially in the context of yogic meditation. It’s mostly about connecting to the focus within you and working on the feeling of stillness. The translation of the word itself means to look or gaze, so you can take it fairly literally. Trataka meditation is the practice of gazing at a fixed point or object...  MORE

It’s been proven time and again that Yoga practice can have incredible effects on all aspects of your being. More than anything, it’s a practice that allows you to tap into your true potential and live a healthy and long life. Doing any type of Yoga can help with an array of chronic health conditions like urinary incontinenceMORE

From the shores of Hawai’i to the rooftops of India and beyond, this song features musicians across six continents and is a testament to how both music and technology can unite us all. Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people.

This past week, Fox News 5 reported that New York City’s public schools will be required to introduce mindful breathing exercises for students from grades K through 12, according to Mayor Eric Adams. “It’s a really simple practice that can balance out your nervous system,” said Radha Metro-Midkiff, Executive Director of the Integral Yoga Institute of New York. “Inhale to a count of 4 and exhale to a count of 4. Just that simple amount of breathing that we just did literally can start to reverse the stress response.”
