July 21, 2023

It was my honor to join Mayor Karen Bass, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and a delegation of leaders from the California Legislature to celebrate the allocation of funding for safety improvements at the Travelodge in Chatsworth.

The Travelodge has been successful in ensuring that we have interim housing available for people living on our streets and with this funding procured through the California Legislature, the Travelodge will now be able get even more people off of our streets. I am appreciative of the continued collaboration from our partners at every level of government to address this crisis with the urgency that it demands. I look forward to our continued partnership for the betterment of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Howard and Rebecca Luck

Howard and Rebecca Luck live each day with the goal of making the world a more fun and inclusive place for all. This week we spotlight them for their commitment to those in our community who face and overcome learning disabilities.

Howard and Rebecca met in middle school, which was the beginning of their heartwarming love story. Both Howard and Rebecca have experienced the trials and tribulations of having learning disabilities. In high school, Howard’s counselor went as far as telling him that college was not an option for him. Howard took that moment as a personal challenge, kicking off his commitment to pursue and earn a degree in Business Administration.

After the pair volunteered and worked with the We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym (WRTS) in 2018, the duo was offered the chance to own and operate WRTS' location in Northridge. It was an opportunity they both jumped at. As owners of the gym, the Lucks have successfully fostered an environment in which children, no matter their ability, can have a safe, friendly place to play. The Lucks are passionate about the mission of full inclusion and work to create opportunities for children of all ages and abilities. They worked tirelessly every day to live up to the gym's motto, “Finally a place where you never have to say I’m sorry.”

WRTS Northridge has a series of incredible programs for kids and with one of their latest additions being the 'Magic Stars Academy' in which Howard teaches children to perform magic tricks while connecting those tricks to valuable life lessons. If you are interested in learning more about the organization's classes and resources, visit this link to learn more

The Lucks strive to be model members of the community, taking each opportunity they can to help make our community a better place. We commend them for their dedication and look forward to their continued success for the community and children.
