Summer is halfway over and it’s already been an unforgettable one! From spending the day cooling off at the local LA City pools to hanging out in the evenings at Summer Night Lights, there’s always exciting things happening in the One-Five!

We kicked the summer-themed events up a notch this week and held a Harbor City Fireside Chat at Camp Machado in Ken Malloy Park. With Agua Fresca and talking around the firepit, we were able to come together and spend time with our neighbors. Harbor Gateway residents are invited to join us next week for Coffee with the Councilmember at the Enclave.

I’m also looking forward to the SailGP race this weekend! I can’t wait to be on the waterfront with my neighbors at the Port of Los Angeles’ Outer Harbor which will serve as home to the two-day spectacle of exhilarating racing.

Make this summer one of relaxation and enrichment. Help out at a community garden, go to a neighborhood event, spend time walking around your neighborhood, go visit another community in the One-Five! See you out there!

SAILGP

The global championship of high-tech, high-speed sailing, SailGP, which is raced on identical F50 hydrofoiling catamarans reaching speeds over 60 miles per hour, will be at the Port of LA’s Outer Harbor July 22-23. Click here for more information.

I BUILD THE TOWER SCREENING

In an effort to extend the “Cinematic Bridge” from the Harbor to Watts, LA Harbor International Film Festival (LAHIFF) and our office will present the acclaimed documentary feature film I Build The Tower, Sunday, July 30, at 3  PM at the Warner Grand Theatre. ONE-FIVE FIRESIDE CHAT

A big thank you to the Harbor City residents who came out to our Fireside Chat at Camp Machado on Thursday evening. It was a great opportunity to be outdoors with our neighbors and talk about the place we love most - the One-Five. From sharing our Harbor City budget wins & giving office updates to hearing constituents' ideas and concerns - we’re stronger together - and I can be a better Councilmember thanks to all of your input, advice and support.

RESURFACING

Thanks to the Bureau of Street Services, multiple streets have received an upgrade. Check out the new and improved 254th Street!

FIVE POINTS BEAUTIFICATION

Last weekend we worked with GAP to paint and pick up trash underneath the underpath at Five Points. Our office wants to make sure this bike path remains passable and safe for our community.

NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On Wednesday, we honored the outgoing Harbor City Neighborhood Council Board Members, recognized community volunteers, and swore in the incoming NC members. From Holiday tree giveaways to local clean ups and mental health community events - it's an honor to work with the Harbor City NC to better our community. I look forward to continuing our work for the residents of Harbor City and the One-Five!

BRIDGE TO SUCCESS CLEAN UP

Join us Saturday, July 29th for our “A Bridge to Success” Community Beautification Day in memory of Lindsay Nicole Pollack. From 8 AM - 2 PM, volunteer to clean up the Frampton Pedestrian Bridge just in time for the new school year!

COFFEE WITH THE COUNCILMEMBER

Join us on Tuesday as we’re taking our Harbor Gateway Town Hall to a more casual setting, a coffee shop! Join us for Coffee with the Councilmember at the Enclave. Join us from 5-7 PM at 990 W. 190th St., free parking on site.

REIGNITE HOPE TOUR

It was wonderful to take a tour of ReIgnite Hope, a vocational welding training facility located in the Gateway. The newest class of students just began this week will be trained to pass their American Welding Society Exam and on their way into a career in welding. The program is free for the students, and has changed the lives of the many graduates! We look forward to seeing the continued success of ReIgnite Hope!

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

Thanks to the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council for organizing a community clean up this past weekend at Normandale Rec Center. The Neighborhood Council was joined by our office, LAPD, Normandale Rec Center staff, and plenty of community volunteers to clean the neighborhood and pick up bulky items around the park!

DEL AMO ACTION COMMITTEE

The Del Amo Action Committee is an environmental justice organization based in West Carson that works with stakeholders to encourage community involvement for responsible land use planning that focuses on health and community safety. Our office joined with representatives from LA County, AQMD, Cal EPA, US EPA  and various other government agencies to tour County and City sites to discuss sustainable future planning uses.

SAN PEDRO MAKERS MARKET

Now until 4 PM, head over to the San Pedro Makers Market at West Harbor (6th St. & Harbor Blvd.) Come enjoy food, drinks, live music, games for kids and over 3 dozen makers. It will be fun for the whole family!

HONORING TONY GIOIELLO

On Thursday we celebrated and honored Tony Gioiello’s retirement after 43 years of service to the city. After beginning his career in 1980 as a student worker, Tony rose to the ranks to Deputy Executive Director of Development of the Port of Los Angeles. Thank you for your service to the Port of Los Angeles and the Harbor Area - Tony, you will be greatly missed!

BILLBOARD UPDATE

We demanded, filed litigation and introduced legislation to ensure that the company took this billboard down - for both safety and aesthetics of this area. The panels have been removed and the framework remains. However, on Tuesday at our community observation for the removal, a crane fell from the truck contracted by the Advertising agency that was holding workers who were actively removing the billboard. Construction work is a dangerous job and it’s important we continue to advocate for workplace safety. I’m grateful we had LAPD and Port Police on site, and LAFD Paramedics came quickly. Please join me in praying for their speedy recovery.

POLAHS TRADES GRADUATION

On Friday we celebrated the graduation for the POLAHS Welding & Construction Skilled Trades Summer Program. For the past 3 years, the Port of LA High School has offered a six-week Skilled Trades Summer Program to learn welding, pipe welding, construction, and plumbing. The Program allows students to achieve journey-level certification. Congratulations to all the graduates, what incredible career opportunities you have ahead of you!

BREAKING GROUND ON THE PROMENADE

On Tuesday we broke ground on the second phase of the San Pedro Promenade. This Phase will continue the promenade from the Maritime Museum to the SP Slip. With this space, everyone will be able to come down, enjoy this beautiful working harbor and see the wonders of what we do here to move the world’s cargo.

HEALING CIRCLE

On Sunday our community of Watts endured a tragedy and one life was lost and 4 others were shot at Imperial Courts. This week I attended a Community Healing Circle as community leaders created a safe, supportive environment to discuss and work to heal from the violence. Coming together during these times is such a powerful way to heal and build community by being open and sharing our feelings, thoughts, and concerns.

COMMUNITY PUBLIC ADVISORY BOARD

This Tuesday our office attended the Spanish Community Public Advisory Board (CPAB) at Saint Lawrence of Brindisi Church Hall. Many of our community members have been having concerns of illegal dumping, so we invited the Mayor’s Office to teach a 311 course on the mobile app so constituents can be better equipped to help keep our community clean.

WATTS TOWERS

This week we took a tour to check out the future changes that will be coming to the public spaces surrounding Watts Towers campus, courtesy of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. This project will work to further develop and beautify this historic site in our community.

JOB FAIR

RECOGNIZING RUDY MENDOZA

On Thursday we said goodbye to an incredible mentor and leader in our students’ lives - Rudy Mendoza. Rudy has served LAUSD for 29 years and for the past 11 years he’s been more familiarly known as Principal Mendoza for Banning High School. The impact Rudy has had on our Wilmington teens is unmatched. We are grateful for his leadership, not just in the halls, but in the Wilmington community!

TIO CARLOS SQUARE

On Tuesday we dedicated the intersection of Lakme Ave. & Sandison St. in Wilmington as Carlos "Tio Carlos" Prinzen Square in honor of a man who dedicated his life to supporting his community and improving the lives of others.

For decades, Tio Carlos volunteered at the Banning High School Parent Center mentoring generations of students and making a difference in their lives. He will forever be remembered and his legacy will live on in the hallways of Banning High School, the Wilmington community, and the Harbor Area.

HARBOR SENIOR CLUB

Last week we joined the Harbor Senior Club where a group of over 40 seniors meet Fridays at 11 AM at the Wilmington Recreational Center. They come together to play games, sing Karaoke or enjoy delicious homemade food. We were able to join them to discuss the services provided by the City and how they can get involved.

HEART OF THE HARBOR SUMMER POP UP

Join Heart of the Harbor for their summer pop up Sunday, from 11 AM - 4 PM at the John Mendez Youth Center, 707 W C St. They will have live music, vendors, and food and a very special dance performance by Peru at 2:30 PM.

¡El verano está a mitad de camino y ya ha sido inolvidable! Desde pasar el día refrescándose en las piscinas locales de la Ciudad de Los Angeles hasta pasar un rato en las noches de Summer Night Lights, ¡siempre suceden cosas emocionantes en el One-Five!

Esta semana dimos un paso más en los eventos temáticos de verano y celebramos una charla junto a la imitacion de fogata de Harbor City en Camp Machado en Ken Malloy Park. Con Agua Fresca alrededor de la hoguera, pudimos reunirnos y pasar tiempo con nuestros vecinos. Los residentes de Harbor Gateway están invitados a acompanarnos la próxima semana para tomar un café con el concejal en el Enclave.

¡También estoy deseando que llegue la carrera de SailGP este fin de semana! No puedo esperar para estar en el paseo marítimo con mis vecinos en el Puerto Exterior del Puerto de Los Ángeles, que será el hogar del espectáculo de dos días de emocionantes carreras.

Haga de este verano uno de relajación y enriquecimiento. ¡Ayude en un jardín comunitario, vaya a un evento del vecindario, pase tiempo caminando por su vecindario, vaya a visitar otra comunidad en el One-Five! ¡Nos vemos por ahí!

SAILGP

El campeonato mundial de vela de alta tecnología y alta velocidad, SailGP, que se compite en catamaranes de hidroala F50 idénticos que alcanzan velocidades de más de 60 millas por hora, se llevará a cabo en el Puerto Exterior de Los Ángeles el 22 y 23 de julio. DOCUMENTAL I BUILT THE TOWER (CONSTRUYO LA TORRE)

En un esfuerzo por extender el "Puente cinematográfico" desde el puerto hasta Watts, el Festival Internacional de Cine del Puerto de Los Ángeles (LAHIFF) y nuestra oficina presentarán el aclamado largometraje documental I Build The Tower, el domingo 30 de julio a las 3 PM en el Warner Grand Theatre. CHARLA DEL ONE-FIVE JUNTO A LA FOGATA

Muchas gracias a los residentes de Harbor City que asistieron a nuestro Fireside Chat en Camp Machado el jueves por la tarde. Fue una gran oportunidad para estar al aire libre con nuestros vecinos y hablar sobre el lugar que más amamos: el One-Five. Desde compartir nuestras victorias presupuestarias de Harbor City y brindar actualizaciones de la oficina hasta escuchar las ideas y preocupaciones de los electores, somos más fuertes juntos, y puedo ser un mejor miembro del Concejo gracias a todos sus aportes, consejos y apoyo.

REPARACIONES

Gracias a la Oficina de Servicios de la Calle, varias calles han recibido una mejora. ¡Mira la nueva y mejorada 254th St.!

EMBELLECIMIENTO EN CINCO PUNTOS

El fin de semana pasado trabajamos con GAP para pintar y recoger basura debajo del subterráneo en Five Points. Nuestra oficina quiere asegurarse de que este sendero para bicicletas permanezca transitable y seguro para nuestra comunidad.

JUNTA VECINAL

El miércoles, honramos a los miembros salientes de la Junta del Consejo Vecinal de Harbor City, reconocimos a los voluntarios de la comunidad y juramentamos a los miembros entrantes del NC. Desde obsequios de árboles navideños hasta limpiezas locales y eventos comunitarios de salud mental: es un honor trabajar con Harbor City NC para mejorar nuestra comunidad. ¡Espero continuar nuestro trabajo para los residentes de Harbor City y One-Five!

LIMPIEZA BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

Acompanenos el próximo sábado 29 de junio para nuestro día de embellecimiento comunitario "Un puente hacia el éxito" en memoria de Lindsay Nicole Pollack. ¡De las 8 AM a 2 PM, ofrézcase como voluntario para limpiar el puente peatonal de Frampton justo a tiempo para el nuevo año escolar!

CAFÉ CON EL CONCEJAL

Acopanenos el martes mientras llevamos nuestro ayuntamiento de Harbor Gateway a un entorno más informal, ¡una cafetería! Acompanenos a tomar un café con el concejal en el Enclave. El evento es de las 5 a 7 PM en 990 W. 190th St., estacionamiento gratuito en el lugar.

TOUR PARA REINICIAR LA ESPERANZA

Fue maravilloso hacer un recorrido por ReIgnite Hope, un centro de capacitación vocacional en soldadura ubicado en el Gateway. La clase más nueva de estudiantes que acaba de comenzar esta semana será capacitada para aprobar su examen de la Sociedad Estadounidense de Soldadura y en su camino hacia una carrera en soldadura. ¡El programa es gratuito para los estudiantes y ha cambiado la vida de muchos graduados de ReIgnite Hope! ¡Esperamos ver el éxito continuo de ReIgnite Hope!

LIMPIEZA COMUNITARIA

Gracias al Consejo Vecinal de Harbor Gateway South por organizar una limpieza comunitaria el pasado fin de semana en el Centro Recreacional Normandale. ¡Al Consejo Vecinal se unieron nuestra oficina, el LAPD, el personal del Normandale Rec Center y muchos voluntarios de la comunidad para limpiar el vecindario y recoger artículos voluminosos alrededor del parque!

COMITÉ DE ACCIÓN DEL AMO

El Comité de Acción de Del Amo es una organización de justicia ambiental con sede en West Carson que trabaja con las partes interesadas para alentar la participación de la comunidad en la planificación responsable del uso de la tierra que se enfoca en la salud y la seguridad de la comunidad. Nuestra oficina se unió a representantes del condado de Los Ángeles, AQMD, Cal EPA, US EPA y varias otras agencias gubernamentales para recorrer los sitios del condado y la ciudad para discutir usos de planificación futuros sostenibles.

MERCADO DE FABRICANTES DE SAN PEDRO

Desde ahora y hasta las 4 PM, vaya al mercado de fabricantes de San Pedro en West Harbor (6th St. y Harbor Blvd.) Disfrute de comidas, bebidas, música en vivo, juegos para niños y más de 3 docenas de fabricantes. ¡Será divertido para toda la familia!

HONRANDO A TONY GIOIELLO

El jueves celebramos y honramos el retiro de Tony Gioiello luego de 43 años de servicio a la ciudad. Después de comenzar su carrera en 1980 como estudiante trabajador, Tony subió de rango para convertirse en Director Ejecutivo Adjunto de Desarrollo del Puerto de Los Ángeles. Gracias por su servicio al Puerto de Los Ángeles y al Área del Puerto Tony, ¡lo extrañaremos mucho!

ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA CARTELERA PUBLICITARIA

Exigimos, interpusimos litigios e introdujimos legislación para garantizar que la empresa retirara la cartelera publicitaria, tanto por seguridad como por estética de esta área. Se han quitado los paneles y queda el marco. Sin embargo, el martes en nuestra observación comunitaria para el retiro, una grúa cayó del camión contratado por la Agencia de Publicidad que retenía a los trabajadores que estaban retirando activamente el cartel. El trabajo de construcción es un trabajo peligroso y es importante que sigamos abogando por la seguridad en el lugar de trabajo. Estoy agradecido de que tuviéramos al LAPD y la Policía Portuaria en el lugar, y los paramédicos de LAFD llegaron rápidamente. Acompanenme para orar por su pronta recuperación.

GRADUACIÓN DE OFICIOS DE POLAHS

El viernes celebramos la graduación del Programa de verano de oficios especializados en soldadura y construcción de POLAHS. Durante los últimos 3 años, POLAHS ha ofrecido un programa de verano de oficios calificados de seis semanas para aprender soldadura, soldadura de tuberías, construcción y plomería. El programa permite a los estudiantes alcanzar las credenciales más altas: certificación de oficial. ¡Felicitaciones a todos los graduados, qué increíble oportunidad de carrera tienen por delante!

PONIENDO LA PRIMERA PIEDRA EN EL PROMENADE

El martes comenzamos las obras de la segunda fase del Paseo Marítimo de San Pedro. Esta Fase continuará el paseo desde el Museo Marítimo hasta el Muelle SP. Con este espacio, todos podrán bajar, disfrutar de este hermoso puerto en funcionamiento y ver las maravillas de lo que hacemos aquí para mover la carga del mundo.

CÍRCULO DE SANACIÓN

El domingo, nuestra comunidad de Watts sufrió una tragedia donde falleció una persona y cuatro más resultaron heridas de bala en Imperial Courts. Esta semana asistí a un Círculo de Sanación Comunitario mientras los líderes comunitarios creaban un ambiente seguro y de apoyo para discutir y trabajar para sanar de la violencia. Reunirnos durante estos tiempos es una forma tan poderosa de sanar y construir una comunidad al ser abiertos y compartir nuestros sentimientos, pensamientos e inquietudes.

JUNTA CONSULTIVA DE ASESORÍA COMUNITARIA

Este martes nuestra oficina asistió a la Junta Consultiva Pública de la Comunidad en Español (CPAB) en el Salón de la Iglesia de San Lorenzo de Brindisi. Muchos de los miembros de nuestra comunidad han estado preocupados por los vertidos ilegales, por lo que invitamos a la Oficina de la Alcaldesa a impartir un curso 311 sobre la aplicación móvil para que los constituyentes puedan estar mejor equipados para ayudar a mantener limpia nuestra comunidad.

TORRES DE WATTS

Esta semana hicimos un recorrido para ver los cambios futuros que vendrán a Watts Towers, cortesía de Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. Este proyecto trabajará para desarrollar y expandir aún más este sitio histórico en nuestra comunidad.

RECONOCIENDO A RUDY MENDOZA

El jueves nos despedimos de un increíble mentor y líder en la vida de nuestros estudiantes: Rudy Mendoza. PLACA A TÍO CARLOS

HARBOR SENIOR CLUB PARA PERSONAS MAYORES

La semana pasada nos unimos al Harbor Senior Club donde un grupo de más de 40 personas mayores se reúnen los viernes a las 11 AM en el Centro Recreativo de Wilmington. Se reúnen para jugar, cantar Karaoke o disfrutar de la deliciosa comida que preparan. Esta vez los adultos mayores pudieron conocer los servicios que brinda la Ciudad y cómo pueden involucrarse.

POP UP DE VERANO DE CORAZONE DEL PUERTO

Visite Heart of the Harbor en su evento pop up de verano el domingo, de 11 AM a 4 PM en el John Mendez Youth Center, 707 W C St. Tendrán música en vivo, vendedores, comida y un espectáculo de danza muy especial de Perú a las 2:30 PM.
