Excessive Heat Warning Extended

🌞 Most of Los Angeles is still feeling the heat. A heat warning and advisory has been extended in many parts of the city and county until July 23. During this time, the Department of Public Health reminds everyone to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness, especially older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes, and people with chronic medical conditions who are especially sensitive to extreme heat.

Public Health suggests the following advice during sizzling temperature days: 🌡️

  • Drink plenty of water 💦 and stay hydrated all day.
  • If you must go out, plan your activities to avoid the hottest hours, and always wear sunscreen.
  • Dress in lightweight, light-colored clothes 👕, and wear a hat 🧢 or use an umbrella ☂️.
  • Remember, cars can turn into ovens 🚗🔥, even with 'cracked' or open windows. Never leave kids or pets inside vehicles. Dial 911 🚨 if you spot a child or pet alone in a car.

If you are looking for a place to cool down and escape the sun, remember that all Los Angeles City libraries double as cooling centers.

Keeping Our Beaches Safe And Clean
As thousands of people flock to our beaches to beat the heat, we must keep them safe and clean. The rule is simple—pack up what you brought in, and clean up after yourself. These simple gestures help protect our coastline and its ecology 🌊.
A Message About The WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strike

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the SAG-AFTRA union strike is more than a headline - it's deeply impacting the lives and prospects of the committed individuals who depend on this industry. With the advent of new platforms and the impact of the pandemic, the Hollywood landscape has changed significantly. However, these many thousands of working families remain the backbone of our city's entertainment economy. Their concerns are valid and must be addressed fairly. I urge industry leaders to come to the table in good faith to resolve these disputes.

Important Committee Changes

I'm honored to have been named the new chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for the 2028 Olympics. The Olympics is more than just a global sporting event; it's a unique chance for our city and the Westside to be in the global spotlight. It also provides a significant opportunity for job creation, substantially contributing to our local economy. In this role, I will focus on establishing key relationships and highlighting the outstanding features that our city offers. Click here to stay involved with our committee activities.

Other committee updates: The Economic and Community Development Committee will be dissolved and oversight of the Economic and Workforce Development Department and other economic, workforce and business related policies will be under the jurisdiction of the Trade, Travel and Tourism Committee, which I have the honor of chairing.
Venice Beach Games

The Venice Beach Games are back! This outdoor sports and fitness festival is returning on Saturday, July 29. With more than 80 events on the agenda, including thrilling competitions, serene meditations, invigorating cold plunges, and more, there's truly something for everyone.

Here's the game plan: Registration and wristband pickup kick off early at 8 a.m., and the events run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. 🕓. You can secure your spot in advance on Eventbrite or in person on the morning of the event.

Park's Pick
Our featured Park's Pick this week is the fantastic Tallula's Restaurant, a delightful small business near the beach. There's something truly special about supporting local gems like Tallula's. Not only do they serve up mouth-watering Mexican cuisine, but they also offer a friendly staff and a vibrant summer beach vibe. By dining here, you're treating yourself and giving a much-needed boost to our local economy!

This week's Pet of the Week is the charming Guapo! This friendly feline is three-years-old and weighs 8.5 pounds.
